Dear Consumer: They tell me not to get angry. But If I am honest, sometimes I do.

Picture
Dear Concerned Consumer,

The marketing research tells me that I should focus on the positive when I address you. I shouldn’t talk about the environment, or the health of my soil – they say you do not care about those things.

They tell me not to discuss the challenge of feeding the world. I should not detail the challenges of feeding my own family on a farmer’s income, with ever rising input costs, unpredictable weather patterns and buyer preferences that change with the direction of the wind. They tell me this doesn’t register with you.

They tell me to only speak about things that directly impact you. They tell me not to talk about the science, because the emotional registers more. They tell me not to talk too long or write too much, you don’t have time.

They tell me not to get angry. But if I am honest, sometimes I do.

I get angry that you have time to read about the latest detox diets and “natural” foods, yet don’t have time to read how seed technology is increasing yields in developing nations, and helping us here at home to be better stewards of our land.

I get angry that you are willing to pay a premium, up to 60%, on a product with a label that doesn’t even mean what you think it does.

I get angry that you think “Big Agriculture” is waging some kind of war, but refuse to acknowledge the huge profits being made off those labels you are now demanding.

I get angry that you demand “chemical free” farming, or even think that “chemical free” is possible. I get angry so many of you do not seem to know what a chemical is.

I get angry that marketing hides that all types of farming – from organic to conventional – use chemicals. They do it SAFELY and minimally, but they use them.

I get angry that you do not understand that farmers only provide raw product and that once it leaves our farm we are not responsible for what the food processors do to it.

I get angry that you don’t celebrate the fact that you spend less than 10% of you disposable income on food, when people in other nations spend 40%.

I get angry that you try to compare the decisions you make about your garden, to the management decisions my family has to make for our farm. If your garden has a bad crop, you go to the store. If we have a bad crop, we stand to lose our farm, our house, our source of income. If entire areas have bad crops, thousands are effected by supply and price.

I get angry when you talk to a guy at the farmer’s market, who grows 40 organic tomato plants in his backyard where his 8 free range chickens live, and decide his opinion on agriculture policy is more trustworthy than mine.

I get angry that you expect us to change our farming practices as frequently as you change your diet fads, and to make such changes without using any technology.

I get angry that you demand “humane treatment” of livestock without having actually ever spent time with livestock. I get angry that you think my cattle herd needs the same treatment as your toy poodle.

I get angry that you think I need to be told how to treat my animals, like PETA is going to offer some insight that years of working with and caring for these animals hasn’t already taught me.

I get angry that you want the latest and greatest gadgets in every aspect of your life, and then expect me to put on overalls and grab a pitchfork, and farm the way someone told you that your great Grandfather did in the 1940’s.

I get angry that you think it’s fair to demand farming practices match some romanticized version of an early era and are perfectly accepting of the fact these changes will take my land and water, which I now use to feed hundreds, and use it to feed only dozens.

I get angry that you give more weight to Facebook memes than actual scientific studies. I get angry that you take Food Babe’s word, who has yet to actually set foot on a modern farm and literally has no qualifications to talk about the things she does, over nearly the entire scientific community.

I get angry that you cannot tell the difference between credible science and bad science. Like the “GMO Pig Feed” study from Australia. Or the “Glyphosate toxicity” study in rats. I get angry that the real scientists even have to address claims from these studies.

I get angry that you think there is some kind of war going on in rural America. That Monsanto has enslaved us all to fight their battle, and we are too “simple” to know any better. That conventional farmers are fighting with organic farmers. That big farmers are fighting with small farmers.

I get angry you don’t actually come out to rural America and see that we are all here, like we always have been, farming side by side and eating lunch together at noon.

The marketing research tells me you won’t have read this far down. If you have, I am actually trying to apologize for my anger.

I KNOW it’s not your fault. I KNOW that modern agriculture has failed to tell our story and companies took advantage of that.

I KNOW there is ridiculous amount of information available that is often confusing and opposing.

I KNOW we are a generation that didn’t get the core education we need to understand science.

I KNOW that nothing sells in the media better than fear.

I KNOW that most of you don’t know a farmer and that most of you have never set foot on a farm.

I am apologizing for my anger. And I am going to continue to try and reach out, in a positive way. But I just want you to know, if my anger shows through and it feels like it’s at you, it’s not.

It’s more at myself, and my industry, for not doing a better job of explaining the truth to you sooner. And yes, you do have the RIGHT to know. I just wish you had time for the whole story.

Sincerely,

An American Farm Wife

Latvia And Greece Kick Monsanto Out, Opt To Ban Gm Crops!

September 7, 2015

First Scotland opted to ban GM crops from its country, citing fear of GMO crops contaminating its food supply, then Germany followed suit. Now, both Latvia and Greece have booted Monsanto from their countries and banned the only GM crop presently allowed to be grown in EU countries, Monsanto’s MON810 GM Maize.

I am a scientist who once made and used GMO crops for research. Twenty years of experience has taught me important lessons about them. One concerns the lack of scientific integrity of GMO risk assessments. Careful study of the documents shows that applicants (mostly companies) are gaming the system in numerous and interesting ways; at the same time, government regulators are allowing them to do so. None of this would matter if GMOs were inherently safe, but they are not. They even have dangers that are rarely discussed, but which should be more widely known. These two understandings have led me to conclude that no GMO currently on the market would pass an honest risk assessment, even by the rather low standards that most national regulations and laws require.

Abstract

Prominent scientists and policymakers assert with confidence that there is no scientific controversy over the health effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)—that genetically modified crops currently in commercial use and those yet to be commercialized are inherently safe for human consumption and do not have to be tested. Those who disagree are cast as “GMO deniers.” This article examines scientific reviews and papers on GMOs, compares the findings of professional societies, and discusses the treatment of scientists who have reported adverse effects in animal feeding experiments. This article concludes by exploring the role that politics and corporate interests have had in distorting an honest inquiry into the health effects of GMO crops.

Apparently no state or provincial wildlife agency has blamed GMOs or farm chemicals for a decline in whitetail numbers, though the drop began roughly when such products came into widespread use. Still, there’s reason to closely follow the story of GMOs and chemicals used to treat our crops. Until science offers clear proof of their safety, it seems wise for deer managers to proceed with caution.

Australia's Judy Carman, Ph.D. on Inadequate GMO Testing - Aug 17, 2015

Dr. Judy Carman, BSc (Hons), PhD, MPH, MPHAA sheds light on the GMO safety issue and discusses the woefully inadequate requirements for GMO approval and integration into the world food supply, and what happens when you ignore the warnings of scientists who's research is skewed by conflicts-of-interest."

"On the ones that I reviewed, almost two-thirds, this was the only thing that they did in toxicity. This is called an acute toxicity study. What they do is they say okay we've made this gm crop, we expect it to produce this protein, this one protein, that's what we expect it to do, we're going to take that protein, we're going to put it down the throats of some rats once and we're going to see if they die in 7 to 14 days, and if they don't die, that means you can eat it for generations and it's not going to cause any problems."

Stunning Corn Comparison: GMO versus NON GMO - Zen Honeycutt on March 15, 2013

The claims that "There is no difference between GMO corn and NON Gmo corn" are false. Yesterday while on a playdate at the lake, Vince from De Dell Seed Company, Canada's only NON GMO corn seed company called me to support the march and Americans finding out about GMOs. He emailed me this stunning report, clearly showing the nutritional value difference between GMO corn and NON GMO corn. I was floored. And at the same time, not totally surprised because Glyphosate draws out the vital nutrients of living things and GMO corn is covered with it.

The important thing to note in these deficiencies is that these are exactly the deficiencies in a human being that lead to susceptibility to sickness, disorders and cancer. People who have osteoporosis are low in calcium and magnesium, people who have cancer are low in maganese. The list goes on and on.

GMO Corn has 14 ppm of Calcium and NON GMO corn has 6130 ppm. 437 X more.

GMO corn has 2 ppm of Magnesium and NON GMO corn has 113ppm. 56 X more.

GMO corn has 2 ppm of Manganese and NON GMO corn has 14ppm. 7X more.

Look at the levels of Formaldehyde and Glyphosate IN the corn! The EPA standards for Glyphosate in water in America is .7ppm. European Tests showed organ damage to animals at .1ppb (.0001ppm) of Glyphosate in water. Our water levels allow glyphosate 7,000X higher than what has been shown to be toxic in animals. This corn has 13 ppm! 130,000 times higher than what is toxic in water!*

In a study that Dr. Huber reported, on Elizabeth Dougherty's Talk Radio, .97 ppm of formeldehyde showed to be toxic in ingestion to animals. This corn has 200X that! That is why the animals , given a choice will not eat it at all, they can smell the formeldehyde!

Please share this report with your legislature, farmers, news editors, school district food services and Moms.

We will no longer be feeding our children food with nutritional deficiencies, foreign proteins, toxins, sprayed with Glyphosate, or injected with pesticides. Nor will we be fed their lies of safety!

The Bad Seed: The Health Risks of Genetically Modified Corn - 7/14/13

With symptoms including headaches, nausea, rashes, and fatigue, Caitlin Shetterly visited doctor after doctor searching for a cure for what ailed her. What she found, after years of misery and bafflement, was as unlikely as it was utterly common.
Allergenic eosinophilic disorders, however, aren't counted in that data. They were first identified about 20 years ago, according to a pioneer in the field, Marc Rothenberg, MD, PhD, a professor at University of Cincinnati medical school and director of an affiliated center for eosinophilic disorders. "We're in the midst of an allergy and autoimmune epidemic," Rothenberg told me on the phone, "and the environment is the black box." Mansmann's GMO theory was "interesting," he went on, before quickly adding that "no one in conventional medicine will have the data" to prove it.

Your Call: When it comes to GM foods, has the FDA failed to protect the public?
http://kalw.org/post/your-call-when-it-comes-gm-foods-has-fda-failed-protect-public#stream/0

Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Stephanie Seneff have a new paper coming out very soon. Here is a little bit from The Gary Null Show at 25:00:

Samsel: "When Monsanto originally applied to get Glyphosate ingredient in RoundUp registered for use as an agricultural herbicide, they hired a number of contractors, and they also did some in-house testing, submitted reports to the EPA in order to secure their approval and greenlight the herbicide to market. At the same time, they asked that all of the studies that were done on animals, they asked that they would be sealed and marked as trade secret property of Monsanto corporation. So all of the studies saw the EPA's eyes and the people who sat on the committee...but no one else could see it. The public review process was actually violated in my opinion as no members of the scientific community or the public could see the documents that Monsanto submitted to get Glyphosate registered. All they could see were the summaries the EPA wrote, their opinions and what caught their eye in the Monsanto studies...Monsanto did conducted numerous studies...
What I discovered reading all of those documents is I believe that Monsanto misrepresented the data, deliberately covered the data and so that they could bring the product to market. They found statistically significant compound related damage to the kidneys, to the eyes, to the lungs, to the testes of male animals, to the pancreas, to the liver, the adrenal gland, to the pituitary gland, the thymus gland, virtually every gland and organ was affected by glyphosate and there were numerous
adinomas and carcinomas, and they even detailed what those carcinomas were of the particular types...and in that paper we diclose some choice data from multiple Monsanto studies...

Health Impact News Exclusive - 9/17/15 - Dr. Don Huber – Expert Analysis

Dr. Huber: “Well some of the weeds have become genetically modified, because the genetically engineered genes in Roundup ready plants are very promiscuous. They are not stable. They can move in pollen and move by soil microorganism. Soil organisms can pick up the genes from plant decomposition and then if they infect other plants [such as weeds] the genes can be transferred. [In other cases] some of the super weeds developed from pure selection. If a certain type of weed is repeatedly exposed to something such as glyphosate, eventually an individual weed will survive and produce several hundred thousand seeds that have a competitive advantage over weaker weeds. Eventually the weaker weeds are dominated by the stronger and they begin to dominate the crop. This process of natural selection would have been nullified with some of our older techniques such as crop rotation. The older farming techniques wouldn’t have given the super weeds a chance to get established. If they did develop, it might take 30 or 40 years or even a hundred years for a stronger weed to move across the production area.” - See more at: http://healthimpactnews.com/2014/glyphos...h.l4JLl2Uk.dpuf

http://healthimpactnews.com/2014/glyphos...h.l4JLl2Uk.dpuf

During its years investigating glyphosate’s bioactivity, Monsanto conducted hundreds of trials on mice, rats, beagle dogs, rabbits and other life. Among the many cancers and diseases Monsanto’s own research found associated with glyphosate are:

• Adenoma cancer in the pituitary gland
• Glioma tumors in the brain
• Reticular cell sarcomas in the heart
• Malignant tumors in the lungs
• Salivary mandibular reticular cell carcinoma
• Metastatic sarcomas of the lymph gland
• Prostate carcinoma
• Cancer of the bladder
• Thyroid carcinoma
• Adrenal reticulum cell sarcomas
• Cortical adenomas
• Basal cell squamous skin tumors

In female mammals there were cancers of the lung, liver, thymus, stomach, bladder adrenal glands, ovaries, colon, uterus, parathyroid and mammary glands.

Erin Brockovich: Many of you have written to me about tackling Bill Nye the Science Guy about his flip flop on GMOs. Bill Nye used to think genetically modified organisms weren’t a great idea. Let's just say... I think he is still quite confused and will certainly struggle with the information I present below.

His concern, as he outlined in a chapter of his 2014 book, “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation," was that scientists didn’t have a clear picture of what they could do to the ecosystem.

But starting in February, his tune began to change. Late that month, Nye visited Monsanto, a corporation known for genetically modifying agricultural products. Around that time, Nye told Real Time's Miles Leicher that he had “revised [his] outlook.”

I don't want to really start up an argument about the safety of consumption or eating of GMOs... because that would be for another day.

I want to talk about how Monsanto has hooked farmers, like addicts on drugs, to a Viscous Cycle with the mandatory use of Monsanto seeds and the application of Monsanto chemicals; herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and micro-nutrients.

I just want to impart a simple concept... seeds are genetically altered so as not to be subject to chelation of the soils (clumping up of micro-nutrients to starve the weeds) with the herbicide Roundup (which is what glyphosate was originally patented as). So the now the glyphosate-resistant crops are sprayed with Roundup... (more and more every season as we have created "super weeds"). The soils chealate... again, more and more each year. Farmers then apply more fertilizers and micro-nutrients to counter the effect... and the Viscous Cycle continues.

It's been over ten years in most areas of the country this Vicious Cycle has played out... and what are the results.

Well let's use Ohio as an example... we see increasing levels of the micro-nutrient manganese if surface water used for Drinking Water supplies (black water folks)... It's a real problem...with real data.

We see the growing and reoccurring "Super" algae blooms on Lake Erie (a massive Drinking Water supply)... and a direct result of the over application of fertilizers and micro-nutrients caused by this Vicious Cycle.

I posted this to get you thinking... to encourage you to do your own reading and to answer those many requests to call out Bill Nye."

The fact of the matter is everybody is doing gene therapy on themselves every time they're putting food in their body either for good or for harm."

"We believe because they're so toxic, they're so long-lived, they're found inside plants but readily move into water, that we could really see big ecosystem changes because of these chemicals," he says. He says that neonicotinoids, now found in stream and well samples across the United States, are not only affecting pollinators like bees and butterflies but killing insects -- the underpinning of the food chain. And that affects birds, fish, and other wildlife. "The chemical companies are really running the show here," Black says. He questions whether a chemical closely related to nicotine - a known carcinogen - should be so widely used on food crops until further safety studies are done. "It's not just about the environment. It's that we are not taking care of humans."

I get angry that you cannot tell the difference between credible science and bad science. Like the “GMO Pig Feed” study from Australia https://youtu.be/lGLWDGXgs88. Or the “Glyphosate toxicity” study in rats https://youtu.be/OWQON4FzQo4. I get angry that the real scientists even have to address claims from these studies.

Austria and Italy Celebrate Bans on GM Crops with EU Opt-Out - 9/24/15

Austrian Health Minister Sabine Oberhauser and a number of Italian Ministries have confirmed that both countries are officially requesting an opt-out from growing the eight varieties of GM maize permitted or set to be permitted at the EU level, thus there will now be a full ban on GM crops in both countries under new EU regulations.

Northern Ireland and Lithuania have followed France, who announced their decision last week, and also Greece and Latvia in asking for an opt-out from growing GM crops. Germany and Scotland have also made it clear that they will follow the same path.

Monsanto knew all along! Secret studies reveal the truth of Roundup toxicity- 9/18/15

"The conclusion is clear: they knew...Monsanto misrepresented the data", says Samsel, "and deliberately covered up data to bring the product [glyphosate] to market."

"Anthony Samsel is an independent research scientist working internationally in the interest of public health and the environment. He is a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and a former scientist and consultant at Arthur D. Little, one of the world's leading management consulting firms.

Now retired, Samsel has devoted much of his independent research on Roundup's toxicological characteristics and bioactivity. Unable to gain access to research reports and data Monsanto submitted to the EPA through FOIAs, he turned to his senator's office, who assisted in the procurement of studies and reports he sought.

Months later he received a hoard of scientific documents, over 15,000 pages worth, covering Monsanto's complete glyphosate research.

With his co-investigator Dr. Stephanie Seneff at MIT the two have been reviewing Monsanto's data. Their conclusion is Monsanto's claims about glyphosate's safety are patently false. The company has known for almost four decades that glyphosate is responsible for a large variety of cancers and organ failures.

Clearly it was for this reason that Monsanto demanded the data and reports to be sealed and hidden from public scrutiny as proprietary trade secrets.

We don't pay enough attention to these other ingredients, Samsel states, because the EPA permits Monsanto to add anything it wants to enhance Roundup's potency while identifying these substances innocuously as 'inert'. When Monsanto convinces the public that glyphosate breaks down quickly, we are not told that the compound's metabolic byproducts are equally toxic.

‘Safety assessments of GMOs are non-existent’

Michael Hansen: Clearly, such testing needs to be done and that will be in a forthcoming paper. By the way, this series of four papers is based on thousands of wet lab tests and is not “just a model”. This paper is focused on using modern systems biology methods to provide a foundation, at the molecular level, for all researchers to understand, with full transparency, how GM may perturb complex molecular systems. There is an active effort towards conducting wet lab tests on the results indicated from this systems biology analysis. However, conducting such experiments is extremely difficult, given the lack of transparency from those who own, manufacture, and control those GM seeds, be it soy or others. For example, there are legal constraints in the US to even obtain the seeds to conduct such testing.

American Media Silent on GMO Bans (Add to these countries Greece, Germany, Latvia and Scotland who just recently banned GMO)

A quick Google News search turns up virtually no results for the bans by Russia and France, aside from a few scattered alternative news sites.

With more Americans than ever before learning about GMOs and making their own decisions on whether to include such foods in their diet, and a huge vote looming in the Senate over a possible ban on mandatory GMO labeling in America (click here to learn more and take action), you’d think the news giants like NBC, Fox News, CNN and others would be chomping at the bit to get this news out to their readers and viewers.

But alas, they have chosen not to cover these stories, once again giving the American people an incomplete picture about the ongoing food experiment that they never consented to in the first place.

TTIP poised to gut US states’ ability to protect on toxic chemicals

Washington, DC – A new report Preempting the Public Interest: How TTIP Will Limit US States’ Public Health and Environmental Protections by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) details how EU proposals for the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) would usurp US states’ authority to regulate toxic chemicals. These proposals would not only curtail states’ efforts to protect the public from toxic exposure, but also threaten any State regulations in the public interest that exceed federal standards.

Dr Zac Bush - Gut/Brain Injury: How, why, and what you can do about it - Published on Jun 10, 2015

"Cancer just hit 1 in 2...49 percent of American adults are now diagnosed with cancer before they die...and I have kids...these kids are looking at inheriting a world in which they have no financial means to support the largest geriatric population that's ever existed on top of the sickest peer group that's ever existed...and so for me as a parent it's really difficult for me to have any peace in my sleep at night thinking this is the world I am passing on...I want to pass on something better to our kids and for goodness sake all the families here with autistic children you've already seen it you're seeing the sickest generation of children we've ever had and that they are the canary in the coal mine..."

Dr. Bush explains the unifying science behind devastating changes in the food, farming, and medical industries, introducing the breakthrough science of bacteria and their communication with the body's defense systems. The industrial storm of the last 70 years has left the human gut and immune systems vulnerable to injury. Two synergistic toxins in our food and water systems have exploited this vulnerability, resulting in direct damage to the tight junctions that compose the natural firewalls at the gut/blood and blood/brain barriers. The correlations between diet, gut bacteria, and autism have been long-recognized. This new science reveals the mechanisms behind this relationship. The novel science of bacterial communication is the foundation for a new class of dietary supplements that go beyond what has been available.

“GE Trees Fall” Launches Today with Action Camp in North Carolina - September 24, 2015

“Industry is ramming ahead with plans to commercialize GE trees with the collusion of the US government, which is ignoring its responsibility to protect the public and the environment from the threats of GE trees,” stated Anne Petermann, Executive Director of Global Justice Ecology Project and Coordinator of the international Campaign to STOP GE Trees. “This means if the average US citizen wants to be involved in decisions about GE trees that impact their forests or communities, they have to take matters into their own hands – to go back to the time honored traditions of civil disobedience and direct action. We are helping people do this with our GE trees action camp.” And we are in good company. Pope Francis, in his recent Encyclic on the Environment, came out strongly against GMOs due to their impacts on communities, land and the environment–the same impacts we would see from GE tree plantations,” she added. The European Union’s opposition to GM crops has nothing to do with safety

http://www.biofortified.org/2013/10/eu-opposition-to-gm-crops/

by Alexander Huszagh | posted in: Commentary | 32
Two years ago, a woman in a classroom with me muttered “isn’t that a good thing?” about the ban on the cultivation and importation of most genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the European Union (EU), “it protects EU citizens, right?”

“Nope, the ban on GMOs merely allows the EU to act as an autonomous region through its politics of food security. The EU set up the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in part for food security, and the ban on GMOs is but an excuse to ban foreign imports and prevent dependency on foreign seed manufacturers in order to maintain the EU’s agricultural self-sufficiency,” my professor for my course on the development and politics of the EU responded.

In spite of my friend’s interjections that the restrictions of GMO imports and cultivation were meant as a form of consumer protection, this professor demonstrated examples to the contrary, highlighting how the ban reflects economic protectionism rather than safety considerations and how the EU’s economic protectionism ensures food security and therefore self-autonomy. Like the misconceptions of my friend on the EU’s policy toward GMOs, anti-GMO advocates and the larger public frequently cite the EU’s policies towards GM crops as evidence; contradicting the conclusions of major scientific, health and food safety organizations from over 600 studies showing the general safety of GM crops. In reality, social and political factors, not scientific concerns, form the basis of the EU’s opposition to cultivating GM crops.

Wheat grown in the United Kingdom, which benefits from the Common Agricultural Policy.
The roots of European agricultural protectionism stem from the formation of the European Union itself. After World War II, Robert Schuman and other European leaders decided that the only way to prevent the outbreak of another war was to link the European economies together, particularly the French and German economies. The shared economic interests would prevent the outbreak of subsequent wars, and therefore lead to increased international interaction within Europe.

Schuman and the other founders commenced on two fronts: by unifying Europe in coal and steel production through the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) and soon after in agricultural production through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Implemented in 1962, the CAP subsidized agricultural production in the EU to stabilize european food markets and ensure food security. Despite the high costs, utilizing over 70% of the EU’s overall budget in 1972 and currently costing european consumers over 100€ per year, the CAP remains a central part of EU food politics in an attempt to maintain stable food prices and food security in Europe. Despite the high costs, food security remains integral to European level politics and this manifests in agricultural protectionism.

Due to the extra-national nature of major biotechnology corporations, European attitudes towards GMOs reflect the European policies of food security and self-autonomy through economic protectionism. In order to maintain self-autonomy, the EU must maintain food security through self-sufficient production, since risks to food availability threaten the social and political stability of a region. This desire for self-autonomy therefore leads to a policy of domestic protectionism, which protects inefficient agricultural production at all levels of production in order to ensure food security. Although the EU’s actual food security and self-sufficiency are debatable, economic protectionism of food production also extends to the acquisition of necessary primary materials, such as seeds.

In order to ensure that Europe is immune to outside influences potentially implicating its food security, the EU must also ensure that Europe is not dependent on outside regions for seeds. Since the largest GMO providers, such as Monsanto, Syngenta and DuPont, are extra-national corporations from the United States and Switzerland, the adoption of GMOs presents a perceived risk to European food security by relying on foreign multinational corporations for input materials.

The opposition of the science-based European Food Safety Administration (EFSA) to the EU’s restrictive GMO policy further reinforces the idea that social and political reasons outweigh scientific concerns in restricting GMO cultivation and imports in the EU. The EFSA has repeatedly stated its supported for GMOs previously approved in other countries, such as Bt cotton, Roundup-resistant cotton, and GM maize. Despite these recommendations, which state the low likelihood of any detrimental impact from commercial adoption of these crops, the EU’s food policy remains one of the most restrictive to GMOs in the world. Rather than restricting GMO cultivation on the basis of scientific considerations, the EU’s anti-GMO stance rather reflects their politics of food security and self-sufficiency and emanates from the european agricultural policies active since the beginnings of the EU.

Distrust over EU GM crop approvals grows as at least 16 countries move towards national bans - October 1, 2015

On 2 October, eleven EU countries (Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Poland) and four regional administrations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the UK, and Wallonia in Belgium) had already formally notified the Commission of their intention to ban GM crop cultivation under new EU rules [1]. Statements by the governments of five additional countries inform of more impending notifications (Bulgaria, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg and Slovenia) [2].

This brings the total number of countries who have already declared their intention to put in place GM crop bans to 16 – plus four regions – representing over 65 per cent of the EU’s population and 65 per cent of its arable land. More could follow suit as the deadline approaches.

Synergistic Destruction: How and GMOs Converge to Fuel Autism and Neurodegenerative Conditions - Dr. Matthew Buckley, PSc.D.

There is a lot of debate as to what is the cause, or better yet, causes of autism. This post isn’t intended to cover all of the variables which fuel autism. It is intended to provide the reader with an understanding of chief mechanisms related to how consumption of Monsanto’s RoundUp, by way of consuming genetically modified corn, soy, canola oil, sugar beets, or any other “RoundUp ready” crop, as well as vaccines may fuel microglial activation, a leading factor in all neurodegenerative conditions, including autism (1)(2)(3), Alzheimer’s(4)(5), ALS(6)(7), Parkinson’s(8)(9), non-situational depression(10)(11), and virtually all forms of chronic illness. While this post is more directed towards the discussion of autism, the reality is that all of the factors that I discuss below are unquestionably major factors of consideration in all neurodegenerative conditions.

If any of these live viruses from the vaccines managed to withstand an inadequate immune response, and instead became a chronic infection, which does happen(51), and therefore become a chronic inducer of IFN-y, you have a perfect recipe for significant ongoing brain inflammation, particularly in the GMO induced gut flora altered individual given the fact that IFN-y is also a known promoter of leaky gut.(52)

Four Decades of Herbicide Use Is Creating Zombie Weeds That Just Won't Die

The big change was the development of "Roundup-Ready" crops, introduced by Roundup manufacturer Monsanto in the mid-1990s, he said. Those genetically modified corn, soybeans and other plants were able to survive glyphosate exposure, so farmers could spray the herbicide on their fields — and many came to rely on that single chemical as a result.

"We didn't exercise really good judgement," Johnson said. "We over relied on the herbicide, and Mother Nature will not be defeated ... as a result, a number of weed species have increased in intensity."

Dr. David Lewis: Science Often Plays Second Fiddle to Politics - September 28, 2015

In 1996, I published a two-page commentary in the journal Nature entitled “EPA Science: Casualty of Election Politics.” Three years later, Nature published a research article in which my coauthors and I raised concerns about EPA’s 503 sludge rule, which regulates biosolids. This Clinton-era rule allows all toxic chemical wastes in biosolids, except for nine heavy metals, to be applied to farms, forests, golf courses, school playgrounds and other public and private lands at millions of times higher levels than permitted in air and water.

To discredit me, the head of EPA’s Office of Wastewater Management in Washington, D.C., and one of his subordinates, had breakfast and lunch with executives of Synagro Corporation. Synagro, the leading company in the biosolids business, provided EPA allegations of research misconduct against me, which Synagro and EPA subordinate distributed publicly. EPA stopped supporting my research and later transferred me to UGA to await termination.

The editorial notes the science was based solely on studies commissioned by herbicide manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s and never published.

Monsanto ‘Deliberately Covered Up Data’ Proving Glyphosate is Cancerous for Four Decades

What will it take to shut down Monsanto’s doors irrevocably? Likely it will be the same type of lawsuit that finally pulled the shades on the tobacco industry. If Big Tobacco eventually had to pay a $206 billion settlement over 25 years for lying about the health impacts of cigarettes, what do you think Monsanto will have to pay for lying about glyphosate’s carcinogenic nature for almost 40 years?

A Google search of Juma’s paper reveals it has landed on many websites and Twitter.

Opting out of GMOs in the EU – what does it take? - September 3, 2015 by Pat Thomas

Not there yet

Counties wishing to opt out of GMO cultivation are indeed weighing many factors and the process is neither simple nor straightforward.

We should be celebrating that the process of challenging GMO cultivation on UK and EU soil has begun. But there is some danger in presenting it as a fait accompli, as has been the case so far. Doing so risks making the public believe that there is no more to do, that government has done the ‘right thing’ and that they no longer need to pay attention to a subject which many find difficult and challenging.

A drop-off in public engagement and support for a GMO free UK now would be disastrous. More than ever we need citizens to support their governments, to be vocal about their desire to see the UK remain GMO free and use their considerable persuasion to create a GM-free tipping point in this country and beyond.

We've Missed the Entire Point About GMO Food -- A Farmer Explains Why - 09/22/2015

See, despite whatever personal opinions you may hold about the safety, health benefits or labeling of GMO foods, one fact remains inarguable: In order for these crops to grow, it requires death on a massive scale. And that's precisely how GMO crops function. The genetic modification creates an immunity to herbicides such as glyphosate (commonly sold under the brand name RoundUp, for example), eliminating competition so the corn/soybean/canola doesn't die when everything else does.

And when I say death on a 'massive' scale, I'm talking massive. You can see it from outer space. According to the USDA, this year in America alone, more than 170 million acres of corn and soybeans are in production. At a conservative estimate of 10 gallons of glyphosate (the herbicide most commonly used in conjunction with GMO crops) per acre in dilution, this translates to roughly two billion gallons of herbicide poured onto American soils this year alone. Put another way, we're taking an area the size of California and Montana combined, and killing it dead each year.

Most ironically, more than 85% of this GMO corn and soy doesn't even end up as food for humans, at least not directly. 40% is used for ethanol production, and another 45% goes into animal feed. So, let's get this straight: we're killing off hundreds of millions of acres not for human food, but primarily for fuel and feed? That's a real head scratcher right there.

The bottom line is this. Instead of worrying about whether a bag of GMO corn chips is safe to eat, we should probably be asking ourselves some bigger questions. Such as, are we okay with using billions of gallons of herbicide each year, supplied by many of the same companies that provide our seeds? And perhaps most importantly, what are the viable alternatives?

The hidden ingredient in engineered food by Dr. Thierry Vrain

The diversity of the Microbiome is essential to the health of many organs and particularly sensitive are the brain, the immune system, and, of course, the digestive tract. So when you eat everyday foods containing more than 1 ppm of glyphosate – the level where it kills all bacteria in the lab – you should logically expect antibiotic damage to the Microbiome. Consequences can include celiac, Crohn’s, allergies, asthma and many other immune deficiency symptoms such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism and eventually all manners of cancer. And that’s just for humans. We know that fish, frogs, rats and pigs become ill and promptly die. You can easily Google the published and peer-reviewed studies that support every word of this statement. You can also watch my lecture on YouTube: Engineered Food and Your Health: the Nutritional Status of GMOs.

If I were the vice president for promotion at Monsanto, I would do a number of things to keep this secret from going public. I would do all the standard things, of course, like hiring the best advertising brains in the business, emphasizing safety and singing the wonders of the genetic engineering technology. I would also keep your attention on the debate about the engineering technology, i.e. are GMOs good or bad for you? I would spare no trick of the trade to keep your attention away from the toxicity of the herbicide that is sprayed on your food. I would create a small army of graduate students (and scientists, of course – only the size of the bursary differs) and other mercenaries to engage with the anti-GMO “activists” and constantly remind you of the insanity of your fear. Most of the pro and anti-GMO rhetoric is just that: a lot of hot air and a lot of fear. Anything goes as long as it keeps your attention away from the secret ingredient. I would even have books published on the topic, some with all the available evidence of corporate malfeasance exposed in plain view, as long as the emphasis stayed away from the secret.

Grass-Fed and Grain-Fed Beef: A Comparison, Part One

Grass-Fed and Grain-Fed Beef: A Comparison
Part One: Feeding Cattle Grain during Finishing

By Joan Ruskamp
My husband and I run a cattle-finishing operation and raise corn, soybeans and alfalfa on our farm in Dodge, Nebraska.

Over the past few years, we have received more and more questions from consumers interested in how we feed our beef cattle and why we make the feeding choices that we do. I’d like to talk about our beef operation and how we handle grain finishing our animals.

In the beef industry the cattle that are raised for food go through three phases. In the first phase a baby calf is nourished with milk and grass until weaning. The calf then enters a growing phase. The finishing phase is the third phase, where more muscle is added.

Beef cattle operations tend to specialize in one of those three phases. Our family farm operation specializes in the finishing phase. We purchase cattle that weigh approximately 650 pounds. The cattle are placed on a nutritional program. The program starts with a ration or recipe that is higher in forage (edible grasses) and progresses over the next 6-8 months to a higher percentage of grain (corn).

Our primary concern during the six to eight months that we have the cattle is to keep them healthy and thriving. By managing the day-to-day nutritional needs of our cattle we are able to do just that. The feed is measured by weight and dispensed into the bunk (where they eat) twice a day. We also want to make sure the pen (where they sleep) conditions are comfortable. We want cattle to have sufficient space to eat, drink water, walk around, and lay down.

There are generally two categories of finishing: grass-fed and grain-fed. We use primarily grain to finish our beef, for two reasons. First, consumers have demonstrated a preference for the tenderness, marbling and flavor that comes from grain-fed beef. Second, using grain allows us to source our feed locally, from other farming operations in our area. Our cost to produce a pound of beef is much less when using grain.
Grain_Fed_Common_Ground_blogOur approach to the nutrition of our cattle is very scientific. We work with a veterinarian and a nutritionist to determine the exact amount of feed and the exact ratio of nutrients that we feed to the cattle every day.

The basis of our animal feed is modified wet distiller’s grains (MWDGs), which makes up at least half of their nutritional intake. MWDGs are a by-product of producing ethanol, which comes from corn, and they are readily available in our area. Along with the MWDGs the cattle receive a blend of roughage (hay and edible grasses), corn and a mineral supplement.

At our operation, we are committed to quality care for our cattle so that we can provide high-quality beef to our customers. We utilize a scientific approach to animal welfare and animal nutrition. We also work hard to engage with curious consumers who are interested in learning more about why we do what we do.

http://www.loc.gov/law/help/restrictions-on-gmos/eu.php

GMOs and food or feed made from GMOs can be marketed in or imported into the EU, provided that they are authorized after passing strict evaluation and safety assessment requirements that are imposed on a case-by-case basis. Authorizations are granted for a ten-year period by the European Commission through a centralized procedure, as provided for in Regulation No. 1829/2003, or by national competent authorities under Directive 2001/18/EC, which regulates the intentional release of GMOs into the environment. At the EU level, the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) conducts the required risk assessments. GMOs, or food and feed consisting of or containing GMOs, are assigned a unique identifier and are labeled as such to ensure traceability and enable consumers to make informed choices.

Glyphosate Free Certified

BioChecked™ launches Glyphosate Free Certified™ certification for food and produce products. BioChecked™ a leading independent 3rd party certification company is offering packaged food producers and fresh produce producers a service where they can get their produce, ingredients and products tested and be reviewed and placed into their new Glyphosate Free Certified™ program. This program consist of regular testing of a producers produce or products for a chemical that is used as a herbicide on plants that normally are genetically modified. With the current industry hype for GMO labeling, one of the more critical issues that is not being talked about is the actual contamination of this herbicide into our food.

It’s quite crucial to understand that glyphosate contamination is systemic, meaning it is present in every cell of the plant, from root to tip. It’s not just an issue of topical contamination, as with many other agricultural chemicals sprayed on crops. Normally, you need to thoroughly wash your produce to remove topical residues, but you simply cannot remove glyphosate from your produce. And neither can food and animal feed manufacturers who use GE ingredients in their products.

GMO Propaganda and the Sociology of Science - 10/4/15

Research has shown that upstream scientists -- such as biotechnologists, agricultural technicians, or any scientists who create technologies -- carry far less concern for potential risks than do downstream scientists -- such as public health practitioners, epidemiologists, and environmental toxicologists. Where was the voice of the downstream scientist on the Daily Show? I've worked with biotechnologists personally who have expressed to me that they do not even consider risk or unintended consequences of GM technology. I also sat in a toxicology class where an upstream scientist said that he and his colleagues could never have imagined the rapid and prolific emergence of superweeds in response to Monsanto's glyphosate-resistant GM crops (and the copious use of glyphosate). Meanwhile, environmentalists immediately and fully predicted the resultant herbicide-resistant superweeds that these agricultural experts did not.

Perhaps 20% of the scientists in the Pew poll work directly or indirectly on GM technology -- either upstream of downstream. But science, like every other industry, is a social structure. For career purposes and in order to maintain ties to the larger community, scientists tend to support other scientists -- especially the scientists who have the money and prestige. The scientists with money and prestige are largely upstream scientists. Upstream scientists are not threatened, discredited, defamed, and scrutinized the way downstream scientists are. Downstream scientists have to produce immaculate, indisputably rigorous research -- and even when they do they are questioned by the ubiquitous industrial PR machine. Downstream scientists are not a large part of the community.

Welcome back, Teonan. Things are heating up on facebook after the congressional hearing this week. I always advise folks to watch at least one of these hearings.

Panel II

1st witness: Mrs. Joanna Lidback, grass farmer, praised gmo crops, said she was "dissapointed" her state passed a gmo labelling law and read some facts from the fda and said that her pediatrician was fully supportive of her being there.

2nd witness: Mr. Daryl E. Thomas, says our food system will be "crippled" by gmo labelling.

3rd witness: Mr. Gary Hirshberg Chairman and Co-Founder of Stonyfield Farm Inc. At one point in the hearing when asked if gmo food was safe, Mr. Hirshberg added that there was a lot of evidence that has come out that wasn't addressed in this hearing.

The link between adverse health outcomes in children and pesticide exposure is well-documented. A recent Harvard study found that residential exposure to indoor insecticides in and around a child’s home is linked to increased risk of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. An investigation by Yale University researchers found that prenatal exposure to the widely used agricultural pesticide chlorpyrifos is linked to tremors in childhood. An article published in in the Endocrine Society’s journal Endocrinology found that parental exposure to environmental stressors, such as pesticides, before a child is conceived can alter the way genes are expressed in the mother and father, ultimately harming the child’s health when those genes are passed down to the next generation.

Notice to Monsanto Employees and Former Employees: Zamansky LLC Investigates The Monsanto Savings and Investment Plan for Possible ERISA Violations - 10/21/15

According to employee stock fraud attorney, Jake Zamansky, Monsanto’s existing and former employees who purchased company stock through the Savings and Investment Plan may have suffered damage to their retirement savings. If the lawsuit allegations that Monsanto knew the risks of Roundup pesticides prove true, Zamansky states, then the Company knew that its stock price was artificially inflated and that it would correct when the truth came out. Monsanto’s existing and former employees who bought or held company stock that was artificially inflated were likely damaged, he states.

Fresh Produce Tainted With Illegal Pesticides - 10/23/15

The highest percentage of illegal pesticides was found on cactus pads and cactus fruit imported from Mexico. Some of the other tainted fruit and vegetables include limes, papaya, summer squash, tomatillos, chili peppers, and tomatoes, also from Mexico, ginger imported from China, and U.S.-grown spinach and kale. While over 93 percent of the produce tested contain legal levels of pesticide residue, the data shows a pattern of low dose exposure to hazardous pesticides, such as endocrine disruptors.

Did you read the article?

"How the debate could be productively transcended

Rebecca and I had a pleasant conversation afterward, and when I noted that I would be willing to return and participate in discussions or a debate, she remarked that she preferred not to think in terms of debates because in that format, the participants are focused on defeating one another.

She said that she favored situations in which those coming from opposing viewpoints can engage in constructive dialogue not only to discern the grounds on which they disagree, but to explore and expand the common ground between them.

I think that's a promising approach, and if the Alliance for Science sincerely wishes to follow it, I am prepared to accept that within the context of such a specific endeavor, the GMO debate can be provisionally treated as 'over'.

The hidden ingredient in engineered food by Dr. Thierry Vrain - Sept. 2015

But I am not a vice president, although I was more than once in my science days, but that was another millennium. Aside from being a concerned consumer, I now find it necessary to alert you of this sordid story of corporate greed that causes so much illness. All I can do is speak and write publicly about this issue and hope you will do your part.

GE Soybeans Give Altered Milk and Stunted Offspring, Researchers Find - 10/26/15

Pregnant goats fed with genetically engineered (GE) soybeans have offspring who grow more slowly and are shorter, according to a new Italian study (Tudisco et al., 2015). Publishing in the journal of Small Ruminant Research, the researchers were testing the results of supplementing the feed of female goats with Roundup Ready GE soybeans. Roundup Ready soybeans are engineered to resist the herbicide Roundup and are sold by agribusiness giant Monsanto. They are some of the most widely grown soybeans in the world.

The reduced growth of the goat kids was attributed by the researchers to their observation that the milk of the GE-fed mothers was significantly less nutritious and contained less of the IgG antibodies important for early growth.

Senate panel warms to GMOs

Of course this was the agriculture committee — and I’d expect some pro-GMO sentiments from Democrats with big constituencies of farmers. But I was also expecting to see some senators from more liberal states channelling anti-GMO concerns as well. Instead, I heard strong pro-GMO statements, and no senator planted a flag on anti-GMO ground.

As the hearing went on, I started scanning through the members of the agriculture committee to see who might claim the anti-GMO position. Patrick Leahy from Vermont? New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand? But it never happened.

Encinitas bans Roundup weed killer in parks

Monsanto’s Worst Fear May Be Coming TrueThe specifics are worth considering. First, the spraying of 2,4-D and Dicamba on the newer herbicide-resistant crops will not eliminate the need for Roundup, whose use will not decline (see Figure).

That is because, unlike Roundup, neither 2,4-D nor Dicamba are broad-spectrum herbicides. They will have to be sprayed together with Roundup, or with each other (or all of them together) to kill all weeds. This vital fact has not been widely appreciated.

Confirmation comes from the companies themselves. Monsanto is stacking (i.e. combining) Dicamba resistance with Roundup resistance in its Xtend crops and Dow is stacking 2,4-D resistance with Roundup resistance in its Enlist range. (Notably, resistance to other herbicides, such as glufosinate, are being stacked in all these GMO crops too.)

The second issue is that the combined spraying of 2,4-D and Dicamba and Roundup, will only temporarily ease the weed resistance issues faced by farmers. In the medium and longer terms, they will compound the problems. That is because new herbicide-resistant weeds will surely evolve. In fact, Dicamba-resistant and 2,4-D-resistant weeds already exist. Their spread, and the evolution of new ones, can be guaranteed (Mortensen et al 2012). This will bring greater profits for herbicide manufacturers, but it will also bring greater PR problems for GMOs and the food industry. GMO soybeans and corn will likely soon have “extreme levels” of at least three different herbicides, all of them with dubious safety records (Schinasi and Leon 2014).

The first time round, Monsanto and Syngenta’s PR snow-jobs successfully obscured this, not just from the general public, but even within agronomy. But it is unlikely they will be able to do so a second time. 2,4-D and Dicamba-resistant GMOs are thus a PR disaster waiting to happen.

Major packaged-food companies lost $4 billion in market share alone last year, as shoppers swerved to fresh and organic alternatives. Can the supermarket giants win you back?

If any one of these terms raised a hair on the back of your neck, left a sour taste in your mouth, or made your lips purse with disdain, you are part of Big Food’s multibillion-dollar problem. In fact, you may even belong to a growing consumer class that has some of the world’s biggest and best-known companies scrambling to change their businesses.

What Zen Honeycutt has to say to the European Mothers - Zuerich, 03.11.2015

After 20 years directly spraying our food with glyphosate, we are realizing that it does not dry, wash or cook off, we are eating it and it is toxic and harmful to life. However, we American mothers are seeing that when we remove GMOs and toxic pesticides due to chemical farming, our children get better, and we have the science to back up our findings. This is what I came to share with Europeans. I want you to prevent the harm that is happening in America from happening to your children and loved ones. It is not enough for my family to eat organic. My son’s future spouses are out there somewhere, and are likely eating GMOs.

COMMENTS FOR THE ?#?FDA? PUBLIC MEETING Oct. 30 Steven M. Druker, J.D. Author, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, Executive Director, Alliance for Bio-Integrity

Modernizing the Regulatory System for Biotechnology Products: First Public Meeting

For more than twenty years, the FDA’s behavior regarding genetically engineered foods has been consistently deplorable. Not only has it routinely issued false and misleading statements, it has seriously violated explicit mandates of federal food safety law – to the extent that every genetically engineered food on U.S. supermarket shelves sits there illegally.

And these allegations are not exaggerations. They are solidly backed up by documents that were pried from the FDA’s own files through a lawsuit my organization initiated.

For instance, when the FDA issued its policy statement on GE foods in 1992, it claimed it was not aware of any information showing that these products differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way, despite the fact its files contained multiple memos from its own scientists explaining how GE foods do indeed differ, why they pose greater risks, and why none should be presumed safe unless its safety has been demonstrated through rigorous testing. The pervasiveness of the concerns within the scientific staff is attested by a memo from an FDA compliance officer who declared: "The processes of genetic engineering and traditional breeding are different, and according to the technical experts in the agency, they lead to different risks."

Moreover, the FDA compounded the fraud by claiming that GE foods were “Generally Recognized as Safe” among experts and could be marketed without the requirement of any safety testing at all, even though its files reveal that it knew there was no expert consensus – and even though the law mandates that foods containing novel substances must be established safe through solid technical evidence.

Furthermore, to create the illusion that responsible regulation was being exercised, the agency set up a voluntary consultation process that it claims affords “rigorous” review. But the process is not a genuine scientific review, and the FDA’s Biotechnology Strategic Manager has acknowledged that fact – while admitting that the agency does not even request or receive any original test data.

The agency’s shameful behavior continues, and although by now it is well aware of much more information showing that GE foods significantly differ from others, it persists in its bogus claim that it is “not aware” of any; and this blatant falsehood was repeated by an FDA official just last week at the Senate Agriculture Committee hearing. She also asserted that the consultation process is so rigorous that it resolves “all safety issues,” which is not only misleading but ridiculous, because the process is far too superficial to achieve such certitude.

It is high time that the FDA stops deceiving Congress and the public and stops violating the law. It is high time that the agency starts telling the truth about GE foods and at long last obeys the law by removing them from the market and requiring that they be demonstrated safe via formal food additive petitions. Otherwise, it will continue to serve the interests of Monsanto while turning its back on the public interest.

Alexis Baden-Mayer's Statement: Thank you so much to everyone at the White House, the FDA, the EPA and the USDA

who had a hand in convening this opportunity for public comment.

I’m Alexis Baden-Mayer. I’m here today representing the Organic Consumers

Association where I work as Political Director, as well as our ally Moms Across America

and Zen Honeycutt who directs that organization. Zen and I represent some of the millions of people who are searching for the hidden truth about genetically engineered foods. People who are trying to navigate a marketplace where foods contain secret ingredients and 99.7 percent of the GMOs are pesticide plants, genetically engineered to either increase our exposure to dangerous herbicides or turn our foods into toxic insecticides, or both.

Many of our members share a similar story. Whether it’s breast cancer or reproductive issues or painful digestive problems or gall bladder removal or kidney disease or diabetes or obesity, the story is always the same: I was sick. I got medical treatment. I was still sick. I got GMOs out of my diet. I’m starting to get my health back. And, of course, this story can be about loved ones, and that’s what Zen experienced. Her children had life-threatening allergies and autism spectrum symptoms, but their health improved when she put them on a non-GMO diet.

The U.S. must begin to put this inherently risky technology in check and finally grant to U.S. citizens the same kind of sensible regulations that just about every other country has conceded are necessary: GMO labels, pre-market safety-testing of GMOs, and restrictions on where and how GMOs are grown. We need a moratorium on the GMOs that turn our food into insecticides or allow our food to soak up dangerous herbicides.

Genetically engineered crops led to an increase in overall pesticide use by 404 million pounds from the time they were introduced in 1996 through 2011.

It’s time to take glyphosate off the market, now that the World Health Organization has declared it a probable human carcinogen. Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide today are engineered to absorb this carcinogenic herbicide. Glyphosate absorbed into an engineered plant cannot be removed and we are consuming it at levels far above what has been shown to cause harm.

There are hundreds of scientific studies that show how human health can be seriously harmed by GMOs and related pesticides, and we’ll submit these in our written comments.

Written Comments: Regardless of attendance at the public meeting, you can submit electronic or written comments to the public docket by November 13, 2015. Tampons with Glyphosate: Underpinnings of Modern Period Problems? - Nov 2, 2015 by Chandler Marrs, PhD

If we look at women’s health in particular, I cannot help but wondering if glyphosate leaching tampons have something to do with the increase in menstrual related problems like fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, and others. The female vagina and cervix are remarkably efficient vehicles for drug absorption. The vaginal epithelium provides a vast surface area that is richly vascularized and highly innervated. Drugs and other chemicals absorbed via this route directly enter the bloodstream and avoid detoxification via the liver, meaning lower dosages are required to reach the same effect as an orally ingested medication. Small concentrations, therefore, could induce large effects. And small, regular exposures to glyphosate is likely what we get from tampon use.

EPA Used Monsanto’s Research to Give Roundup a Pass - 11/3/15

But the EPA’s exoneration — which means that the agency will not require additional tests of the chemical’s effects on the hormonal system — is undercut by the fact that the decision was based almost entirely on pesticide industry studies. Only five independently funded studies were considered in the review of whether glyphosate interferes with the endocrine system. Twenty-seven out of 32 studies that looked at glyphosate’s effect on hormones and were cited in the June review — most of which are not publicly available and were obtained by The Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request — were either conducted or funded by industry. Most of the studies were sponsored by Monsanto or an industry group called the Joint Glyphosate Task Force. One study was by Syngenta, which sells its own glyphosate-containing herbicide, Touchdown.

A number of Monsanto’s cheerleaders are also worried that a high-profile public vote and debate in the Senate, with a possible filibuster by Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders of Vermont, will cause a major consumer backlash and a widespread boycott of GMA “Traitor Brands.” As Fortune magazine warned in a recent issue, the DARK Act lobby may indeed succeed in ramming through a highly unpopular bill in Congress abolishing Vermont and other states’ rights to label GMOs, but it could turn into a classic case of “winning the battle but losing the war.”

Obama’s New Pick to Head the FDA is an “Ultimate Insider” for Big Pharma

A recent exposé by the New York Times revealed that Califf’s multi-million dollar research center at Duke received more than 60 percent of its funding from the industry, while his 2014 financial disclosure documents showed drug companies like Eli Lilly, Merck, and Novartis paid him hefty fees for “consulting” and in salary support.

And as the Boston Globe reported on Wednesday, Califf also took the “highly unusual” step of removing his name from a series of scientific papers criticizing the FDA’s oversight of clinical trials—”a decision that could raise ethical concerns,” explains the Globe‘s Sheila Kaplan.

Strong Links between Glyphosate and a Multitude of Cancers that are “reaching epidemic proportions”: New Study Shows “the outcomes are alarmingly apparent” - 11/5/15

New report: human guinea pigs (http://www.renewablefarming.com/index.ph...ientific-review)

Samsel and Seneff conclude:

“We have reviewed the research literature on glyphosate and on the biological processes associated with cancer, and we have provided strong evidence that glyphosate is likely contributing to the increased prevalence of multiple types of cancer in humans. Monsanto’s own early studies revealed some trends in animal models that should not have been ignored. Forty years of glyphosate exposure have provided a living laboratory where humans are the guinea pigs and the outcomes are alarmingly apparent. We believe that the available evidence warrants a reconsideration of the risk/benefit trade-off with respect to glyphosate usage to control weeds, and we advocate much stricter regulation of glyphosate.”

One of Goodman’s first acts was to withdraw the Seralini article. He did so in violation of the guidelines for retractions in scientific publishing set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). For any peer-reviewed scientific article to be withdrawn there must be clear evidence that the findings are unreliable due to misconduct (e.g. data fabrication) or honest error; plagiarism or redundant publication; or unethical research. None of those were proven in the Seralini case.

Andrew Wakefield and Stephanie Seneff address the synergistic toxicity of vaccines and GMOs.

"So your gut bacteria are emerging as fundamental to your health. Glyphosate damages gut bacteria. It also allows things through that would not normally get through, so the barrier function of your gut to keep bad stuff out and let good stuff in is damaged and it causes toxins like aluminum and other things to get through the gut and thereby access the brain. So the idea that something that can injure the gut like glyphosate and that might interact with something else that operates through the gut like perhaps MMR vaccine, the idea that those might compound the risk of an adverse outcome is entirely biologically plausible.”

Zen Honeycutt will be updating Moms Across America on her experiences in Maui.

"One would think you'd go to Hawaii to escape reality, instead, I'm here to get a huge dose of reality and the reality is that Hawaii is ground zero for gmo's. This is the incubater, womb for hundreds of genetically modified organisms. Now this means food, this means medications and this means medications that are being put into food and this is what is happening on the Island of Maui'. They have over 1,000 test plots actually in all of Hawaii and in comparison there is only 100 in the State of California and California is one of the largest agriculture states in the world. So you can see by those numbers that here in Hawaii they are being enundated by gmo's and the related pesticides because the majority of gmos are engineered to withstand toxic chemicals and here in Maui' it's been reported that they are spraying at least 80 different chemicals on any given day and these chemicals are intermixed, they are in different combinations that are not reported and those combinations can be in the millions of different kinds of combinations and the problem with that is that the EPA never tests for combinations of chemicals, they only test for the active chemical ingredient in a product and here in Hawaii they're testing all different kinds of combinations in open air test plots..."

"...and they are testing putting drugs and medications inside of things like corn so that when people eat it then they get this medication or that they can reproduce the medication and then take it out of the plant you know later it's used as an incubator for it or they can test gmo's with multiple stacks they call them multiple traits, they are stacked with multiple traits so that's what they are growing here."

SmartLabel is elitist and exclusionary! Only those with smart phones will have access to this product info at the point-of-purchase; the app will only be accessible if the store offers free wi-fi or has a strong cellular signal inside; shoppers will have to know what the hell QR codes are and how to use them; and shoppers will have to have the time to stand there in the store, using the app for every product with this QR smart label! HOW IS THIS SIMPLER, CHEAPER, OR MORE TRANSPARENT THAN A LITTLE PRINTED LABEL DIRECTLY ON THE PACKAGING THAT SAYS "Produced with GMOs"?!? The GMA doesn't ask shoppers to use QR smartphone technology to find out if a product is frozen, homogenized, made from concentrate, wild caught, organic, what its net weight or calorie count is, so how come they're suggesting something so inherently anti-consumer for this? Oh....right.....they're afraid that consumers will reject their products if they learn more information about the ingredients.

Jim Gerritsen: "EXCELLENT NY TIMES ARTICLE USES THE STORY OF WHEAT AND THE EXTRAORDINARY DR. STEVEN JONES TO EXAMINE INDUSTRIAL AG'S HIJACKING OF OUR AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE. Ten years ago when Jim was President of Washington-based Organic Seed Alliance, Dr Steve Jones served with him on the Board. At that time, Steve still was the Washington State University wheat breeder in Prosser. Steve remains one of the best representations of what good science used to - and should - be: a dedicated and honest scientist with unquestioned integrity and genuine humility who both deeply respected the work performed by those before him and maintained an uncompromising devotion to the best interests of the people. Back then, as the ultimate expert, Steve knew that the introduction of GE wheat would contaminate and ruin the foundation wheat collection at WSU Prosser - and thereby jeopardize the wheat industry within and without Washington. He stuck to his guns and flat out refused to allow GE wheat into the wheat collection. The fact is Steve took a lot of heat for standing up for the people's interest. Steve is incredible and an inspiration to everyone around him. This NY Times article does justice to a great man."

Bread Is Broken By FERRIS JABR - OCT. 29, 2015

Industrial production destroyed both the taste and the nutritional
value of wheat. One scientist believes he can undo the damage.

At first, he was ecstatic, but disillusionment soon followed. The essence of plant breeding is innovation — the prospect of creating something truly novel. Yet in his first official role as a wheat breeder, Jones felt stifled. He was tasked with improving the yield and disease-resistance of wheat cultivars that had been designed for industrial milling. Prioritizing qualities the food industry considered superfluous was discouraged. When he tried breeding wheat with higher levels of nourishing minerals, like iron, zinc and magnesium, he was told those characteristics were unimportant. When he proposed working with a healthier wheat that still made excellent bread flour — albeit of a somewhat yellow tint — the university expressed no interest, he says.

Today, Monday, March 23, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are sponsoring a secret meeting in London to promote a recent report detailing in clear terms how to privatize the seed and agricultural markets of Africa– without African stakeholders having a seat at the table.

Two New GE Pigs Want to Go To the Market - Posted on November 11, 2015

It’s important to note that these animals aren’t “transgenic” like many of the GE crops on the market. That is, they do not contain genes from other species or kingdoms like bacteria. Biotech involves more than GMOs, and some methods currently fall outside of regulation or definition. However, we are still talking genetic engineering.

This Is No Way to Regulate GMOs

Their goal wasn't scientific improvement, but regulatory avoidance. “In terms of science, our approach is just another improvement in the field of genome editing,” one of the scientists told the journal Nature. “However, in terms of regulations and public acceptance, our method could be path-breaking” because the new organisms “might be exempt from current GMO regulations.”

If this sentence doesn't bother you, it should. The researchers were openly acknowledging that the point of their efforts is to work around existing GMO regulations.

The FDA requests comments on use of the term “natural” on food labeling.

The FDA is taking this action in part because it received three Citizen Petitions asking that the agency define the term “natural” for use in food labeling and one Citizen Petition asking that the agency prohibit the term “natural” on food labels. We also note that some Federal courts, as a result of litigation between private parties, have requested administrative determinations from the FDA regarding whether food products containing ingredients produced using genetic engineering or foods containing high fructose corn syrup may be labeled as “natural.”

The FDA is accepting public comments from November 12, 2015 through February 10, 2016.

44 Reasons to Ban or Label GMOs - 11/6/15

For twenty years the federal government, through the USDA and FDA, has stated unequivocally that genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) are safe and can help feed the world and save lives. However, over the last two decades independent scientists have brought forth challenges to the prevailing dogma on this important issue. The response of the GMO industry to any critic–irrespective of their credentials or the scientific evidence they provide–is that they are wrong. To determine where the truth lies, we have set about reviewing all available scientific literature on the safety and efficacy of GMOs. The results of our independent investigation are stated in the following 44 reasons to ban or label GMOs. All of the information is footnoted and fully referenced.

The EPA finally did something right. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Toxic pesticide banned on genetically engineered crops

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 25, 2015

“With this action, EPA confirms the toxic nature of this lethal cocktail of chemicals, and has stepped back from the brink,” said Earthjustice Managing Attorney Paul Achitoff. “Glyphosate is a probable carcinogen and is wiping out the monarch butterfly, 2,4-D also causes serious human health effects, and the combination also threatens endangered wildlife. This must not, and will not, be how we grow our food.”

This tiny moth is stirring up the GMO debate in New York - 11/20/15

The genetically engineered moths include a special gene that causes female young to die before reaching adulthood, meaning eventually the females die out and the population can no longer reproduce. So when the GE moths are released into the field, “they mate with the pest counterparts,” said Neil Morrison, Oxitec’s lead diamondback moth research scientist. “And they control the population that way.”

Genetically Engineered Salmon Approved for Consumption - 11/19/15

On the FDA's own site, this is how they state it:

"FDA has approved a new animal drug application concerning AquAdvantage Salmon, a genetically engineered Atlantic salmon."

This "new animal drug application" does not have to be labeled.

The salmon are also made sterile to prevent reproduction in the event they do escape. However, the sterilization technique is not foolproof.

Sweet! We’re beating back GMO Sugar Beets

GMO sugar beets were opposed from day one by food advocates, who pointed out that the technology was not adequately tested before launch. The Center for Food Safety sued the USDA for approving the new technology without performing required environmental testing, and won. However, the USDA let GMO sugar beets go forward despite the ruling. USDA ultimately issued an environmental report, but that report ignored the broad environmental impacts of GMO sugar beets, including the likelihood that glyphosate-resistant beets would ultimately lead to superweeds that are themselves resistant to glyphosate, resulting in even more toxic pesticides being applied, as well as the spread of GMO beets to non-GMO fields.

A ‘drug’ not a fish

Indeed, in order to fulfil its long held ambitions the FDA, under George W. Bush’s administration, determined that transgenic animals intended for human consumption would be regulated as animal drugs by the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine in order to expedite the approval process.

According to the FDA it “regulates GE animals under the new animal drug provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, because the recombinant DNA (rDNA) construct introduced into the animal meets the definition of a drug.”

The final FDA approval process for drugs in the US also takes less time (average 10 months) than approval for, for instance, a food additive (average 24 months) and perhaps especially genetically modified food. This too may have been influential.

As well as salmon, the AquaBounty company is also developing hybrid trout and tilapia which are also designed to grow faster than traditional fish.

Monsanto's Roundup: The Whole Toxic Enchilada By Katherine Paul, Organic Consumers Association - 21 November 15

According to Sustainable Pulse, what EFSA really concluded is this: Glyphosate by itself doesn’t cause cancer. But products like Monsanto’s Roundup, which contain glyphosate and other additives and chemicals that are essential to making the herbicide work? That’s another, or in this case, the rest of the story.

According to the EFSA report:

It is likely, therefore, that the genotoxic effects observed in some glyphosate-based formulations are related to the other constituents or “co-formulants.”

Bingo. Take some glyphosate, mix it up with other chemicals, and you’ve got yourself a cancer-causing concoction. (Genotoxic means “damaging to DNA and thereby capable of causing mutations or cancer). Remove those additives (or adjuvants as scientists refer to them), and you’ve got yourself a weed killer that doesn’t work.

Happy Holidays everyone. Please note that Seralini has been cleared of any wrongdoing. His original study has been republished, so you pro boys can't use that excuse anymore.

Monsanto Put on Trial for Crimes against Humanity in The Hague 12/3/15

Relying on the “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights” adopted by the UN in 2011, an international court of lawyers and judges will assess the potential criminal liability of Monsanto for damages inflicted on human health and the environment. The court will also rely on the Rome Statute that created the International Criminal Court in The Hague in 2002, and it will consider whether to reform international criminal law to include crimes against the environment, or ecocide, as a prosecutable criminal offense. The International Criminal Court, established in 2002 in The Hague, has determined that prosecuting ecocide as a criminal offense is the only way to guarantee the rights of humans to a healthy environment and the right of nature to be protected.

Seralini’s team wins defamation and forgery court cases on GMO and pesticide research

On 25 November 2015, the High Court of Paris indicted Marc Fellous, former chairman of France’s Biomolecular Engineering Commission, for “forgery” and “the use of forgery”, in a libel trial that he lost to Prof Gilles-Eric Séralini. The Biomolecular Engineering Commission has authorised many GM crops for consumption.

The details of the case have not yet been publicly released but a source close to the case told GMWatch that Fellous had used or copied the signature of a scientist without his agreement to argue that Séralini and his co-researchers were wrong in their reassessment of Monsanto studies.

The Séralini team’s re-assessment reported finding signs of toxicity in the raw data from Monsanto’s own rat feeding studies with GM maize.

The sentence against Fellous has not yet been passed and is expected in June 2016.

Highlights

• We examined the rhizosphere bacterial community composition response to glyphosate.
• Next-generation sequencing was used to examine the rhizosphere bacterial community.
• Relative abundance of Acidobacteria decreased in response to glyphosate exposure.
• Long-term glyphosate application could affect rhizosphere nutrient status.

Abstract

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in agriculture with predictions that 1.35 million metric tons will be used annually by 2017. With the advent of glyphosate tolerant (GT) cropping more than 10 years ago, there is now concern for non-target effects on soil microbial communities that has potential to negatively affect soil functions, plant health, and crop productivity. Although extensive research has been done on short-term response to glyphosate, relatively little information is available on long-term effects. Therefore, the overall objective was to investigate shifts in the rhizosphere bacterial community following long-term glyphosate application on GT corn and soybean in the greenhouse. In this study, rhizosphere soil was sampled from rhizoboxes following 4 growth periods, and bacterial community composition was compared between glyphosate treated and untreated rhizospheres using next-generation barcoded sequencing. In the presence or absence of glyphosate, corn and soybean rhizospheres were dominated by members of the phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Proteobacteria (particularly gammaproteobacteria) increased in relative abundance for both crops following glyphosate exposure, and the relative abundance of Acidobacteria decreased in response to glyphosate exposure. Given that some members of the Acidobacteria are involved in biogeochemical processes, a decrease in their abundance could lead to significant changes in nutrient status of the rhizosphere. Our results also highlight the need for applying culture-independent approaches in studying the effects of pesticides on the soil and rhizosphere microbial community.
