This is an older article but this is the time of year when beaches and oceans might be closed, ruining your family time at the water because Monsanto has convinced water departments and conservationists that glyphosate herbicides are safe to spray around reservoirs, recreational ponds, and run-offs into the ocean. Not true. Glyphosate has been linked to sex hormone changes, neurotoxicity, cancer, birth defects and as this article shows, the growth of toxic algae.

Glyphosate Sprayed on GMO Crops Linked to Lake Erie’s Toxic Algae Bloom

Phosphorus—attributed to farm runoff carried by the Maumee River—has long been identified as a leading culprit feeding the excessive blooms in the western Lake Erie basin. Now, according to a new study from chemistry professor Christopher Spiese, a significant correlation has been established between the increased use of glyphosate to the percentage of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in the runoff.

As No-Till Farmer observed from the study, DRP loads in Lake Erie increased in the mid-1990s at the same time that farmers began the widespread cultivation of crops genetically engineered to withstand multiple applications of Roundup.

"For every acre of Roundup Ready soybeans and corn that you plant, it works out to be about one-third of a pound of P [phosphorus] coming down the Maumee," Spiese told the agricultural publication.

APHIS OKs release of GE moths in New York

The plan is to release up to 10,000 GE male moths each week during the cabbage planting cycle (about three to four months). The males are genetically engineered with a lethal gene that they pass on to females when they mate. Experiments already conducted show that the female offspring then die, usually as caterpillars.

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) roundly denounced the USDA’s permit for the world’s first open-air trials of the Genetically Engineered Diamondback moth to be released in Geneva, NY.

“NOFA-NY considers the release of a novel genetically engineered organism to be a major activity with potentially significant and heretofore unknown health and environmental effects,” said NOFA-NY Policy Advisor Liana Hoodes. “It is now up to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to ensure the safety of its citizens before granting the necessary state permit. We call on the NYS DEC to require a full environmental impact statement and public hearings during a complete review under State Environmental Quality Review Act.”

Hoodes goes on to say, “most of the USDA’s environmental assessment confines its review to the general impacts of the new technology, yet neglects to adequately assess the potential impacts of the trials themselves on farms and residences near the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY and across the state.”

California to Warn Consumers About Monsanto’s Glyphosate—But How Much and How Soon?

...CNN also reported, and our experts agreed, that under Prop 65, Monsanto could get away with cancer-warning signs on store shelves, rather than labels on the products. Not ideal.

Reasons for hope

Whatever the levels set by OEHHA and the loopholes exploited by Monsanto, make no mistake: Getting glyphosate listed under California’s Prop 65 is huge, especially when considered in the context of all the other pressure being exerted right now on Monsanto.

Consider all of this:

Grim reaping: Many food crops sprayed with weed killer before harvest

Charles Benbrook, Ph.D., who published the paper on the mounting use of glyphosate, says the practice of spraying glyphosate on wheat prior to harvest, known as desiccating, began in Scotland in the 1980s. “Farmers there often had trouble getting wheat and barley to dry evenly so they can start harvesting. So they came up with the idea to kill the crop (with glyphosate) one to two weeks before harvest to accelerate the drying down of the grain,” he says.

The pre-harvest use of glyphosate allows farmers to harvest crops as much as two weeks earlier than they normally would, an advantage in northern, colder regions.

Monsanto Makes Poison - Deep Science w/Dr. Seneff (MIT)

Gout, all modern diseases caused by Glyphosate.

Seneff: “This is a very informative article on the techniques Monsanto and other biotech companies use to make sure that GMOs and the toxic chemicals used on them stay on the market. The chat room discussion is interesting too - lots of trolls up to their usual tricks.”

Flacking for GMOs: How the Biotech Industry Cultivates Positive Media—and Discourages Criticism

"I don’t think I have ever seen a group so intent on trying to personally attack the journalist covering the issue." said Monica Eng of WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR station. In April, 2016, Eng published a critical story revealing that the agrichemical giant Monsanto had quietly paid a professor at the University of Illinois to travel, write, and speak about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and even to lobby federal officials to halt further GMO regulation. In a grueling, year-long reporting project, Eng uncovered documents proving that Monsanto made the payments to University of Illinois professor Bruce Chassy, and that he advised Monsanto to deposit money in the university’s foundation, where records are shielded from public disclosure.

Pesticides Threat to Champagne Water Quality (Seneca Lake, a toxic pool of chemicals?)

The extensive use of pesticides – including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides – in the region is causing serious concerns to the water quality of the region. According to a study conducted by the local water agency, Eau Seine et Normandie, the chemical residues found both in the surface and ground water in the Champagne area regularly exceed European authorized levels, both for individual chemical molecules and chemical compounds.

Rotten Eggs Jack and Peter DeCoster Headed to Jail—Finally

Martha Rosenberg reports on how after 33 years of labor, environmental, immigration, animal rights and food safety violations, two rotten eggs—Jack and Peter DeCoster—were finally ordered to jail for their role in a 2010 outbreak of salmonella poisoning. The reckoning was a long time coming, considering that as far back as 1982, at least one person had died from salmonella-infected eggs sold by the DeCoster-owned Quality Egg company. And in 1987, nine people died after eating DeCoster eggs, and 500 were sickened.

The DeCosters were each sentenced to three months in jail. Predictably, industry groups like National Association of Manufacturers and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (whose products are central to factory farming) called the sentences “unfair”—even though the DeCosters admitted that Quality Egg workers knowingly shipped eggs with false processing and expiration dates to fool state regulators and retail customers about their age and bribed a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector at least twice to approve sales of poor-quality eggs.

Final Nail? Largest Ever Neonicotinoid Pesticides Study Shows Massive Damage to Bees

What happened when the two biggest makers of bee-killing pesticides commissioned a $3.5-million study on the impact of neonicotinoid pesticides on bees?

The scientists concluded that neonics do indeed harm bee populations. The companies (Bayer CropScience and Syngenta) that funded the largest ever field trial of its kind turned around and called the conclusions “unfair.”

Bee researcher David Goulson told Sustainable Pulse that despite industry’s reaction to the results, he had to give them a “10 out of 10 for effort:”

“The study is well designed, well replicated, well funded—ironically by industry who won’t be best pleased. But the results tally with what has gone before. It’s reached a point where it’s just not plausible to keep denying these things harm bees in realistic studies. I’d say it’s the final nail in the coffin.”

The study specifically found that exposure to neonicotinoids reduces honeybees’ ability to survive their winter hibernation, say researchers.

France is moving forward with a countrywide ban on neonics, effective 2018. While here in the good old United Corporations of America, the pesticide lobby still rules.

US organizations file complaint against Sanderson Farms over use of ‘100% Natural’ in advertising

“We felt the need to take this step based on the information that we received about the drug reside and information from our membership,” she told FeedNavigator. “We feel that consumers are being deceived in purchasing Sanderson Farms’ chicken.”

Seneff: “Many of the chemicals we consume in foods and drugs end up concentrated in sewage sludge that can get relabelled as organic compost. What goes around comes around.”

It’s Time to Talk (Again) about Sewage Sludge on Farmland

Has sewage sludge caused any farm damage? Once the sludge leaves the wastewater treatment plant, it is not tracked; there’s no national system for reporting sludge-related health or environmental problems; and farmers are not known for having deep pockets, which is what it would take to bring the issue of damages to U.S. courts.

Nevertheless, in February 2008, the McElmurrays, dairy farmers from Georgia, received an order and judgment issued by Federal Judge Anthony Alaimo of the 11th Circuit Court. The order addresses and confirms that there have been decades of deceit by the EPA and finds against the USDA and the EPA. The court acknowledges that the sludge applications on the McElmurrays’ farm were responsible for killing hundreds of diary cattle and contaminating the milk supplies in several states. This case allowed subsidies previously only awarded for crop failures due to bad weather or natural disasters to include the injurious affects of land applied sewage sludge. In his ruling, Judge Alaimo said, “senior EPA officials took extraordinary steps to quash scientific dissent and any questioning of EPA's biosolids program.” (United States District Court Southern District of Georgia, McElmurray v. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Case 1:05-cv-00159-AAA-WLB Document 67, Filed 02/25/2008.)

EPA Chief Scott Pruitt Met With Dow CEO Just Before Killing Effort to Ban Toxic Pesticide

New reporting by Associated Press begs further questions about administration's denial of science, coziness with industry

The new reporting comes a day after the American Academy for Pediatrics and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group (EWG) sent a letter to Pruitt urging him to ban the chemical, expressing "deep alarm" that the agency's "decision to allow the continued use of chlorpyrifos contradicts the agency's own science and puts developing fetuses, infants, children, and pregnant women at risk."

It also comes as the EPA "accelerates its purge of scientists."

Is Coconut Oil Healthy? The Controversy Explained

Can you trust the American Heart Association with health information?

The American Heart Association (AHA) is the same organization who told us for years to eat margarine (which was notoriously high in trans fat) calling it “more heart-healthy” than butter because it contains “no dietary cholesterol”. They started this recommendation back in the 1960’s and continued it for decades while the primary ingredient in margarine was partially hydrogenated oil full of trans fat. Well, we now know that the trans fat in partially hydrogenated oils are responsible for upwards of 20,000 heart attacks every year – which spurred the FDA to finally ban it from our food (effective in 2018). It’s rare for the FDA to ban anything! Boy, I’d say the AHA was way off on that recommendation, wouldn’t you?

EU will only extend glyphosate license with national backing

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union will only extend its approval for the herbicide glyphosate if there is sufficient support from the bloc's 28 member states, European Health and Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said on Monday.

..."I wanted to make clear that the Commission has no intention to reapprove this substance without the support of a qualified majority of member states. This is and will remain a shared responsibility," he said.

Seneff: “New paper by myself and Dr. Greg Nigh on the mechanisms by which glyphosate can cause anencephaly (child born with no brain).”

Glyphosate and Anencephaly: Death by A Thousand Cuts

Abstract: Anencephaly, which occurs when the rostral (head) end of the neural tube fails to close early in embryonic development, represents perhaps the most extreme manifestation of neural tube defects (NTDs). A wide range of developmental events and processes, working singly or in concert, are either known to cause, or are strongly associated with, NTDs in general, and with anencephaly in particular. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicidal chemical on the planet. Here we review a multitude of ways in which glyphosate can detrimentally impact, or ‘cut,’ embryological and fetal development to specifically favor the anencephalic phenotype. The evidence presented here includes data gathered from epidemiology, toxicology, general and nutritional biochemistry, and developmental biology. While the case here is often based on statistical associations and plausible biological arguments, we offer clearly defined pathways whereby glyphosate can be seen as likely holding the knife that is inflicting some, or perhaps even most, of these developmental cuts that lead to anencephaly and other NTDs. We offer some suggestions for lines of research to validate or refute our thesis, and conclude with our thoughts on the relevance of this link with regard to public health policy.

Conclusion: ...The Precautionary Principle states that “if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public, or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus (that the action or policy is not harmful), the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those taking that action” [217]. Glyphosate based herbicides (GBHs) have been in use for both commercial and residential applications for nearly 45 years. The evidence reviewed in this paper offers a multitude of very specific routes by which glyphosate might be impairing embryological and fetal development in ways that significantly increase the risk of anencephaly, and epidemiological and animal studies on glyphosate support a link to impaired neurodevelopment in the brain. While an increasing number of governmental regulatory agencies around the world are imposing restrictions on the application of GBHs, the United States and other countries continue to allow widespread use of GBHs in spite of the growing safety concerns, only a small portion of which have been reviewed here. Given the gravity of anencephaly as an outcome of pregnancy, we strongly encourage regulatory agencies to follow the Precautionary Principle and suspend both commercial and residential use of GBHs until it is conclusively demonstrated that glyphosate plays no role in any of the pathways to anencephaly described in this review, nor any role in the multitude of other pathologies to which it has been compellingly linked. Until that time, we urge an informed public to keep these safety concerns in mind with respect to their own use of these chemicals and consumption of foods that may be contaminated.

The Government Is Going to Counter 'Misinformation' About GMO Foods

The Food and Drug Administration will fund a campaign to promote genetically modified organisms in food under a bipartisan agreement to keep the government funded through the end of September…

“It is not the responsibility of the FDA to mount a government-controlled propaganda campaign to convince the American public that genetically modified foods are safe,” said Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-N.Y.), who attempted to get the measure struck from the bill last month. “The FDA has to regulate the safety of our food supply and medical devices. They are not, nor should they be, in the pro-industry advertising business,” Lowey said during a congressional hearing…

States Sue EPA for Failing to Ban Toxic Pesticide

"Several groups sued over the decision in June, asking a federal court to force the EPA to take action on the pesticide. The states, led by New York, joined that suit Thursday and also filed a legal complaint of their own directly with the EPA.

'Job Number One for the EPA should be protecting Americans' well-being, especially that of our children,' said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D), who is leading the states' action.

'Yet the administration is jeopardizing our kids' health, allowing the use of a toxic pesticide for which it can't even identify a safe level.'

Earthjustice also noted that the EPA itself has admitted that there are no safe levels of exposure to chlorpyrifos for human beings.

The lawsuits from the states and independent organizations likely represent the best chance for reversing the EPA's decision via the court system. The only disappointing fact is that they are necessary. The EPA's suspicious reversal on a chemical like chlorpyrifos is creating a leadership void in protecting public health and the environment. Instead, its actions show a government too willing to put the interests of corporations over the health of the public.

New Evidence Shows Bayer, Syngenta Tried to Influence Scientists on Bee Study

On Jan. 11, a Bayer staff member wrote to professor Rosemary Hails at CEH to say, "As co-owner we believe we are entitled to unlimited, unrestricted and prompt access to all such data and information, including, but not limited to, the data called raw data."

The Bayer representative went on to express their frustration at CEH's refusal to hand over the data, despite repeated requests.

CEH refused to hand over the raw data on the wild bees experiment to the companies until after the peer review process, but did present the data on honey bees.

She received the B.S. degree in Biophysics in 1968, the M.S. and E.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1980, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1985, all from MIT. In this CBJ Episode, she details profound contributions to today’s health care crisis.

For over three decades, her research interests have always been at the intersection of biology and computation: developing a computational model for the human auditory system, and an understanding human language so as to develop algorithms and systems for human computer interactions, as well as applying natural language processing (NLP) techniques to gene predictions.

Seneff Reports

She has published over 170 refereed articles on these subjects and has presented keynote speeches at several international conferences. She has also supervised numerous Masters and Ph.D. theses at MIT. In 2012, Dr. Seneff was elected Fellow of the International Speech and Communication Association (ISCA).In recent years, Dr. Seneff has focused her research interests back towards biology.

Dr. Seneff’s Focus on Glyphosate Ubiquity

In recent years, Dr. Seneff has focused her research interests back towards biology. Today she concentrates mainly on the relationship between nutrition and health. Her recent work on the ubiquity of neurotoxic effects from glyphosate provides specific references for the profound relevance of agricultural practices that directly contribute to today’s health care crisis.

Since 2011, she has published over two dozen papers in various medical and health-related journals on topics such as modern day diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, autism, cardiovascular diseases), analysis and search of databases of drug side effects using NLP techniques, and the impact of nutritional deficiencies and associated glyphosate toxicity. Does the World’s Top Weed Killer Cause Cancer? Trump’s EPA Will Decide

...Federal law requires an EPA health-effects review for every pesticide at least once every 15 years, and glyphosate has enjoyed a clean bill of health since 1991, when the agency cleared the way for Monsanto’s GMO breakout by classifying the herbicide as noncarcinogenic to humans…

...Far from settling the matter, eight of the 15 experts expressed significant concerns about the EPA’s benign view of glyphosate, and three more expressed concerns about the data. Their skepticism also raised, again, questions about the independence of the Office of Pesticide Programs, which has the final say on permitting pesticides. The office relies on pesticide manufacturers for the data it uses in making health decisions—and got almost 30 percent of its operating budget from the industry last year…

2018 Farm Bill May Include “NOSB Reforms” Benefiting Industrial Organics

Natural Grocers’ Alan Lewis recently visited Capitol Hill to discuss the upcoming Farm Bill with lawmakers. He shares his experience, insight, and disturbing commentary below about what this may mean for organic food and agriculture.

Cornucopia has done an outstanding job of documenting and describing in detail industrial organic practices, and asking this question of the USDA, NOP, NOSB, and organic stakeholders: “Is this really what we mean by Organic?” In short, Cornucopia is upholding the core tenets of the Organic Foods Production Act by matching congressional intent to how the NOP rules are actually being drafted, interpreted and applied. What the USDA reformers and their allies don’t understand is that the Cornucopia’s of the world are not going to go away. And neither will consumer expectations about organic production practices. The “reformers” can permanently legalize industrial organic, and dismember the NOSB, but that alone will not make industrial organic practices acceptable to the ultimate judges: informed American consumers.

Erin Brockovich: “Ah... say it ain't so... killing us slowly... for so many sources. This is what happens when nasty criminal polluters (DuPont, Monsanto, Bayer, 3M, Dow... to name a few) are aloud to sell millions of tons of their toxic, untested, trillion dollar products... in to the unregulated market place - often with concealed or covered up studies that demonstrate toxicity. Glyphosate Found in Most Samples of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Along the way, she amassed disturbing evidence about the dangers of industrial chemicals — and the practices of the companies that make them. Two documents, for instance, detailed experiments that Dow contracted a University of Pennsylvania dermatologist to conduct on prisoners in the 1960s to show the effects of TCDD, a particularly toxic contaminant found in 2,4,5-T. Another document, from 1985, showed that Monsanto had sold a chemical that was tainted with TCDD to the makers of Lysol, who, apparently unaware of its toxicity, used it as an ingredient in their disinfectant spray for 23 years. Yet another, from 1990, detailed the EPA policy of allowing the use of hazardous waste as inert ingredients in pesticides and other products under certain circumstances.

She had to make peace with not fully understanding a personal tragedy, too. In 1977, her house burned to the ground and her four children died in the fire. Firefighters who came to the scene said the fact that the whole house had burned so quickly pointed to the possibility of arson. But an investigation of the causes of the fire was never completed.

Van Strum suspected some of her opponents might have set the fire. It was a time of intense conflict between local activists and employees of timber companies, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies over the spraying of herbicides. A group of angry residents in the area near Van Strum’s home had destroyed a Forest Service helicopter that had been used for spraying. And, on one occasion, Van Strum had come home to find some of the defenders of the herbicides she was attacking in court on her property.

NEW YORK: Stop the Release of GMO Insects!

Ready to eat genetically engineered moth larvae?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is allowing Cornell University’s Agricultural Research Station in Geneva, N.Y., to conduct an experiment involving the release of millions of genetically engineered diamondback moths. The moths are an Intrexon invention engineered with a suicide gene that will cause the moths’ female larvae to drop dead on cabbage, broccoli and the other cruciferous crops. This means we’ll be eating genetically engineered moth larvae!

TAKE ACTION: Call Governor Andrew Cuomo at 518-474-8390 today to demand a full safety assessment before releasing GMO moths in New York!

Here’s what you can tell Gov. Cuomo:

Stop the Cornell GMO moth experiment. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has a duty to protect the environment and human health. It must conduct a full safety assessment of the risks associated with the experimental release of genetically engineered diamondback moths in an agricultural area. Until this happens, the experiment must be halted.

Where are our state’s environmental regulators?!

In New York State, you have to get a permit to release butterflies at your wedding, but the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is refusing to assert jurisdiction over the release of Intrexon’s GMO moths.

We need our state’s environmental regulators to investigate:

1. Whether GMO moths are safe to eat. If everything goes according to plan, Intrexon’s genetically engineered moth larvae will die on crops (before they’re able to damage the plants). This means we will to end up eating the GMO moth larvae. Regulators should also consider the impact of Intrexon’s suicide gene contaminating nature’s food chain as GMO female diamondback moths, eggs and larvae are eaten by their natural predators.

2. The risks associated with the use of antibiotics in breeding GMO moths. Tetracycline is a medically important antibiotic needed for the treatment of human infections. It shouldn’t be used in agriculture, but it is. Intrexon uses tetracycline to control the expression of its GMO moth’s suicide gene. This is likely to make antibiotic resistance worse. It could also compromise the effectiveness of the GMO trait to control crop infestations with so much tetracycline already in the environment. (Tetracycline is sprayed on orchards and crops.)

3. Whether Intrexon’s strategy is worth the risks. Intrexon, through its subsidiary Oxitec, is trying to convince pest control authorities that the best way to decrease insect populations is to increase them. Their plan to release millions of genetically engineered diamondback moths is counterintuitive and risky. The plan to crash insect populations with the release of GMO moths carrying a suicide gene might not work because of too much tetracycline in the environment or for other reasons. Farmers could be plagued with a new GMO version of an old pest.

4. Whether there’s a better way. According to the New York chapter of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA), this risky experiment with GMO diamondback moths is unnecessary. There are already approved organic and integrated pest management techniques for controlling diamondback moth populations and reducing the harm they do to crops. Given the alternatives, Intrexon’s GMO moths will likely prove too expensive for farmers to try, even if they’re proven to work.

Please call Governor Andrew Cuomo at 518-474-8390 to tell him to stop the GMO moth experiment until there’s a proper Department of Environmental Conservation review.

Court Rules Against General Mills Motion to Dismiss, Says It's Reasonable Consumers Wouldn't Consider Glyphosate-Containing Nature Valley Granola Bars 'Natural'

Moms Across America, Organic Consumers Association and Beyond Pesticides announced Monday that the District of Columbia Superior Court has rejected General Mills' motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the three nonprofits against the maker of Nature Valley granola bars. The recent ruling upholds the right of nonprofits to bring these types of complaints against corporations. It also reinforces the notion that consumers can reasonably expect a product labeled "100% Natural" to be free of herbicides.

These three nonprofit groups sued General Mills in August 2016, for misleading the public by labeling Nature Valley brand granola bars as "Made with 100% NATURAL whole grain OATS" after tests revealed the presence of the chemical herbicide glyphosate, an ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup and hundreds of other glyphosate-based herbicides. The suit was brought on behalf of the nonprofits' members in Washington, DC, under the District of Columbia's Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

"This is a huge win for consumers," said Organic Consumers Association's international director Ronnie Cummins. "In making this ruling, the judge reinforced the right of consumers to have reasonable expectations about what a company means by 'natural.' The 'natural' food industry is estimated at $90 billion a year. By slapping the word 'natural' on products that contain pesticides and other unnatural substances, corporations deceive consumers, and cut into the market share for authentically labeled healthy and certified organic products."

Key findings from the DC Superior Court ruling include:...

What You Wear Matters! Quick Guide to Organic Cotton

A Fact Sheet on Organic Cotton - Lower Impacts for Agriculture and Apparel Industries.

3. A Reality Check About Water and Cotton.

It is well established that cotton agriculture and apparel manufacturing, in general, require
significant amounts of water. Whether the cotton is grown with chemicals, or organically, each
farm and geographic region of the world will have different water usage and impacts. However,
the notion that chemical cotton uses less water than organic cotton is false. Textile Exchange
initiated a peer-reviewed Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on organically grown cotton that uses the
same methodology and the same LCA consultancy as was used for chemically grown cotton to
ensure the most reliable information to base comparisons. Based on the LCA findings, organic
production of cotton for an average sized t-shirt resulted in a savings of 1,982 gallons of water
compared to the results of chemically grown cotton.

The real issue about water is pollution. Toxic chemicals used in conventional cotton production
are poisoning the very water it claims to save.

Just Released Docs Show Monsanto 'Executives Colluding With Corrupted EPA Officials to Manipulate Scientific Data'
By Carey Gillam

Four months after the publication of a batch of internal Monsanto Co. documents stirred international controversy, a new trove of company records was released early Tuesday, providing fresh fuel for a heated global debate over whether or not the agricultural chemical giant suppressed information about the potential dangers of its Roundup herbicide and relied on U.S. regulators for help.

More than 75 documents, including intriguing text messages and discussions about payments to scientists, were posted for public viewing early Tuesday morning by attorneys who are suing Monsanto on behalf of people alleging Roundup caused them or their family members to become ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The attorneys posted the documents, which total more than 700 pages, on the website for the law firm Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, one of many firms representing thousands of plaintiffs who are pursuing claims against Monsanto. More than 100 of those lawsuits have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation in federal court in San Francisco, while other similar lawsuits are pending in state courts in Missouri, Delaware, Arizona and elsewhere. The documents, which were obtained through court-ordered discovery in the litigation, are also available as part of a long list of Roundup court case documents compiled by the consumer group I work for, U.S. Right to Know.

It was important to release the documents now because they not only pertain to the ongoing litigation, but also to larger issues of public health and safety, while shedding light on corporate influence over regulatory bodies, according to Baum Hedlund attorneys Brent Wisner and Pedram Esfandiary.

"This is a look behind the curtain," said Wisner. "These show that Monsanto has deliberately been stopping studies that look bad for them, ghostwriting literature and engaging in a whole host of corporate malfeasance. They [Monsanto] have been telling everybody that these products are safe because regulators have said they are safe, but it turns out that Monsanto has been in bed with U.S. regulators while misleading European regulators."

Esfandiary said public dissemination of the documents is important because regulatory agencies cannot properly protect public and environmental health without having accurate, comprehensive and impartial scientific data, and the documents show that has not been the case with Monsanto's Roundup herbicide and the active ingredient glyphosate.

When reached for comment, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., one of the plaintiffs' lawyers said, "This trove marks a turning point in Monsanto's corporate life. They show Monsanto executives colluding with corrupted EPA officials to manipulate and bury scientific data to kill studies when preliminary data threatened Monsanto's commercial ambitions, bribing scientists and ghostwriting their publications, and purchasing peer review to conceal information about Roundup's carcinogenicity, its toxicity, its rapid absorption by the human body, and its horrendous risks to public health and the environment."

"We can now prove that all Monsanto's claims about glyphosate's safety were myths concocted by amoral propaganda and lobbying teams," Kennedy continued. "Monsanto has been spinning its lethal yarn to everybody for years and suborning various perjuries from regulators and scientists who have all been lying in concert to American farmers, landscapers and consumers. It's shocking no matter how jaded you are! These new revelations are commensurate with the documents that brought down big tobacco."

Several of the document discuss a lack of robust testing of formulated Roundup products. In one email, Monsanto scientist Donna Farmer writes "you cannot say that Roundup is not a carcinogen ... we have not done the necessary testing on the formulation to make that statement. The testing on the formulations are not anywhere near the level of the active ingredient."

The release of the documents Tuesday came without the blessing of Judge Vince Chhabria, who is overseeing the multidistrict litigation moving its way through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. In March, Chhabria did agree to unseal several other discovery documents—over Monsanto's objections—and those documents prompted a wave of outrage for what they revealed: questionable research practices by Monsanto, cozy ties to a top official within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and indications that Monsanto may have engaged in "ghostwriting," of research studies that appeared to be independent of the company.

The revelations within those documents prompted an investigation by the EPA's Office of Inspector General into possible Monsanto-EPA collusion, and roiled Europe where regulators now are trying to decide whether or not to reauthorize glyphosate, which is the most widely used herbicide in the world and is found in numerous products in addition to Roundup.

The lawyers said they are sending copies of the documents to European authorities, to the EPA's OIG and to the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), which has been sued by Monsanto for moving to list glyphosate as a known carcinogen.

Monsanto has fought to keep most of the documents it turned over in discovery sealed, complaining to Judge Chhabria that in several court filings plaintiffs' attorneys presented discovery materials out of context and tried to exploit the information to influence public opinion. Chhabria has both chided Monsanto for trying to improperly seal certain documents and warned plaintiffs' attorneys against unfairly publicizing certain documents. It is unclear how Judge Chhabria will react, if at all, to the law firm's release of these more than 75 documents.

Baum Hedlund attorneys said they notified Monsanto on June 30 of their intent to unveil the 75+ documents and gave Monsanto the legally required 30-day window to formally object. That period expired Monday, clearing the way for them to make the release early Tuesday, said Wisner.

Concerns about the safety of glyphosate and Roundup have been growing for years amid mounting research showing links to cancer or other diseases. But the lawsuits only began to accumulate after the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015 classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. The plaintiffs in the lawsuits allege that the combination of glyphosate with certain surfactants used in Monsanto-branded Roundup products is even more toxic than glyphosate alone, and Monsanto has sought to cover up that information.

Monsanto has publicly denied that there are cancer connections to glyphosate or Roundup and said 40 years of research and scrutiny by regulatory agencies around the world confirm its safety.

Monsanto has made billions of dollars a year for decades from its glyphosate-based herbicides, and they are the linchpin to billions of dollars more it makes each year from the genetically engineered glyphosate-tolerant crops it markets. The company is currently moving toward a planned merger with Bayer AG.

From Mom’s Across America: Monsanto’s Secrets Are out

On Tuesday attorneys from Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, who are representing hundreds of plaintiffs accusing Monsanto of causing their Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, made Monsanto's secrets available to the public. Documents produced during the discovery of the lawsuit, including emails, manipulated studies, and texts are proving to be a treasure trove of evidence not only for their case but for hundreds of thousands who have long named Monsanto the most hated corporation in the world.

One of the most damning quotes below is by Donna Farmer, who I met twice, once at the Monsanto shareholder meeting and once at the CA EPA hearing on glyphosate. Both times she firmly stated her utmost confidence in the safety of glyphosate. One would be keen to note that she did not use the words "glyphosate herbicides" or "Roundup" which indicates the final formulation.

In the following quote, she clearly indicts Monsanto by specifying the distinct difference:

“The terms glyphosate and Roundup cannot be used interchangeably nor can you use “Roundup” for all glyphosate-based herbicides anymore. For example you cannot say that Roundup is not a carcinogen...we have not done the necessary testing on the formulation to make that statement.” Donna Farmer - Lead Toxicologist, Monanto Company

The distinction is that glyphosate, the declared "active" chemical ingredient of Roundup and glyphosate herbicides, may not immediately toxic by itself. It turns out that glyphosate alone is harmful, yes, but not the most immediately toxic and cancer-causing of the ingredients in Roundup. Toxicologists, however, are most concerned with immediate toxicity. For example, does a chemical kill an animal in 4 days. But they are not interested in long-term harm. This is why Monsanto's tests are accepted by the EPA even though they are only 4 days to 3 months long at most. The fact is that the EPA does not require a chemical company to produce long term (two-year) animal studies (although we do not condone animal testing) with blood analysis on the final formulation of any pesticides. They only require long term studies on the one declared active chemical ingredient. I witnessed this first hand when I met with the EPA last year and asked them if they had any long term animal studies with blood analysis on Roundup or any of the formulations, and they said,"No, not that we are aware of."

This means, just as Donna said that no one, not Monsanto, their sales executives, farmers, landscapers, or retailers, can claim that Roundup is safe.

Should be game over for Monsanto, right?

In other documents, I found a statement that should be the nail in the coffin for Monsanto:

(Note, in the original document, the words “although,” “are suggestive, they” are crossed out. See link below for copy of original paragraph.)

“...apparent. Overall, although the results are suggestive, they fail to demonstrate a significant association of glyphosate exposure with the risk of spontaneous abortion and should be considered cautiously in light of the substantial exposure misclassification that is likely to have taken place and the lack of adjustment made to the ORs to account for the influence of confounding variables.”

Tragically, Donna Farmer took it into her own hands to strike out the word "suggested" from a study that stated that the results suggested that glyphosate causes miscarriages. This is a betrayal of womanhood, a crime against humanity.

As a mother who has lost a baby, and as a woman who has far too many friends who have lost theirs, I am furious. How dare she decide for the scientific community, farmers, food manufacturers, landscapers, retailers, and consumers who purchase Monsanto's glyphosate products that we don't need to know that information? If a chemical or product even has the slightest suggestion of harming the life or development of a fetus, it is the mother's right to know and her right to be able to choose to avoid it.

Donna Farmer does not think so however, she thinks you don't need to know that Roundup could cause you to have a miscarriage.

We hope you disagree and will tell the EPA that based on this new evidence, to immediately revoke the license of glyphosate.

Please contact Neil Andersen, Chief Branch Manager of the Pesticide Review Board, who is in charge of the team deciding whether or not to renew or revoke the license of glyphosate. Email: or call 703-308-8187

Sustained Glyphosate Use Reveals Risks to Soil and Environmental Health

(Beyond Pesticides, July 21, 2017) A March 2017 review of studies on the agricultural use of glyphosate (the active ingredient in “Roundup” and other formulated herbicides) points to widespread persistence in soils subject to long-term, intensive glyphosate use, and myriad resulting concerns about impacts on soil and environmental health. The review, by Robert J. Kremer, PhD, of the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources, cites concerns that include: reduction of nutrient availability for plants and organisms; disruption to organism diversity, especially in the areas around plant roots; reductions of beneficial soil bacteria; increases in plant root pathogens; disturbed earthworm activity; reduced nitrogen fixing at plant roots; and compromised growth and reproduction in some soil and aquatic organisms.

However, many will not be benign and their effects can carry through to the final marketed product, whether it be plant or animal.”[2] This could translate into possible toxins, allergens, carcinogens, or other changes that could affect those eating a GMO.

Dr. Michael Hansen, a Senior Scientist at Consumers Union, the policy arm of Consumer Reports, wrote, “While genome editing has been portrayed in the media as an incredibly precise process, where one can go in and literally only intentionally change one or a small number of nucleotide bases, the reality is that there can be large numbers of off-target effects.”[3] He says, “This study raises troubling concerns.”

Those sales, the lawsuit contends, amount to “illegal monopolistic behavior,” as farmers rush to adopt the product. “They’re not necessarily buying a product because it’s better and meets their needs, they’re buying it because it’s a defense mechanism,” Lesko told the Post-Dispatch.

Farm Aid 2016 Press Event with Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews & More - 31 years

“This is a revolution...It’s so big that you can hardly see it...People don’t really believe that this is happening, but it is happening and our politicians and our government, especially our President is behind it…” Neil Young

“Farming has been stolen…” Dave Mathews

Short clip from Farm Aid:

Monsanto Admits Untested Roundup Herbicide Could Cause Cancer in Secret Court Documents

The revelations do not stop there below is an amazing summary of the other secret e-mails on the possible damage caused by Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide:

Farmer wrote in 1999: “I will not support doing any studies on glyphosate, formulations or other surfactant ingredients at this time with the limited information we have on the situation.”

In an e-mail from 2010, Stephen Adams, Monsanto’s Chemistry Regulatory Affairs Manager, stated “With regards to the carcinogenicity of our formulations we don’t have such testing on them directly…”

In 2013 Xavier Belvaux, Monsanto’s Regulatory Affairs Lead also confirmed that: “We (Monsanto) do not conduct sub-chronic, chronic or terotogenicity studies with our (Roundup) formulations.”

In a Monanto PowerPoint presentation from 2008 concerning the “EU Expert Advisory Panel”, Page 6 of the presentation is astonishingly titled: “Monsanto’s Roundup ® acts on one of the key stages of cellular division, which can potentially lead to cancer in the long term.” The page references a French in-vitro study which observed adverse effects associated with Roundup. The final page contains “questions” regarding how to “position” in-vitro hazards using “urine concentrations from applicator exposure into plasma concentrations.”. Monsanto also considers the risks in “running a new study”.

In an e-mail in 2014 sent by Monsanto’s Head of Product Safety, Dr. William Heydens, regarding the “IARC evaluation of Glyphosate” (which announced that Glyphosate is a probable carcinogen in 2015), Heydens concedes that “while we have vulnerability in the area of epidemiology, we also have potential vulnerabilities in the other areas that IARC will consider, namely, exposure, genetox, and mode of action…”

Heydens also admits in 2015 to the “Low level presence of formaldehyde” (carcinogen by inhalation) in Roundup; and “Low level presence of NNG (N-nitroso-glyphosate) in Roundup – many N-Nitroso compounds are carcinogenic.”

Heydens and Farmer, discuss various studies which observed adverse effects by the formulated Roundup product. Specifically, Dr. Farmer acknowledges: “[t]he interest point is glyphosate all basicially [sic] had no effect the formulated product did – does this point us to the coformulants – sufactants? [sic]”. Dr. Heydens also admits, after discussing with Monsanto consultant John Desesso, that “we are in pretty good shape with glyphosate but vulnerable with surfactants. . . What I’ve been hearing from you is that this continues to be the case with these studies – Glyphosate is OK but the formulated product (and thus the surfactant) does the damage.”

Farmer summarizes the findings of Monsanto’s expert, Dr. James Parry: “Dr. Parry concluded on his evaluation of the four articles that glyphosate is capable of producing genotoxicity both in vivo and in vitro by a mechanism based upon the production of oxidative damage.”

Heydens states in 2015 that “surfactant in the formulation will come up in the tumor promotion skin study because we think it played a role there.”

Dear Farmers,

Children are the heart and soul of our families, our country’s success and our future as a human race. Our children need you to reduce their toxic burden, They are sick. 1 out of 2 children have a chronic illness in America today. Many studies have shown that the weakening of their immune system, auto immune diseases, food allergies, digestive issues, cancer, liver disease, birth defects and more, can all be caused by the harmful effects of pesticides. You have seen what DDT, PCBS, Agent Orange, Roundup and now Dicamba are doing to crops and to the health of your fellow citizens and around the world. It is time to stop trusting that Monsanto is offering your progress and start trusting that generations of American farmers knew what they were doing before Monsanto came along 40 years ago with these toxic chemicals. You do not need to be dependent on Monsanto’s high priced GMO seeds and chemicals.

I am writing to you to ask you to reconsider GMO chemical farming altogether and to switch to organic and regenerative agriculture. Citizens across the country have faith in our farmers, that you can farm, as has been done for thousands of years, without toxic chemicals. You can farm in a way that does not destroy the soil, increases water retention, stops drift damage, sequesters more carbon, eliminates toxins on food crops and in our water supply. It is time for chemical farming to end, the cycle of poisoning our land, water and families to end, and for a new regenerative era to begin.

We parents are begging you to do the research and look at the farmers who are already successfully farming with organic regenerative agriculture. The organic matter of their soil is higher, food is more nutritious, inputs are reduced, yield is the same if not better in many cases, and their profits are greater. In addition they can sleep at night knowing that they are contributing to keeping people with cancer alive with their organic food, and children from getting sick.

Thom talks with Mike Papantonio about documents showing possible Monsanto and US government collusion.

1st segment, about 10 minutes.

Seneff: “Very interesting new article by Evaggelos Vallianatos on Monsanto's corrupt studies on pesticide safety at IBT, including glyphosate.

The Swamp

...For example, Monsanto’s best-selling weed killer glyphosate came out of the IBT swamp. This is something I did not know while serving at EPA. I learned about it from a stream of Monsanto documents that saw the light of the day because so many people have been suing Monsanto for cancer from exposure to glyphosate.

In March 17, 2015, William F. Heydens, a Monsanto scientist, sent an email to his colleague Josh Monken in which he said roundup had “low” levels of carcinogenic formaldehyde and carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. In addition, Heydens said, “Many tox[icological] studies for glyphosate had been done at a lab (IBT – Industrial Biotest) that FDA / EPA found to generate fraudulent data back in the 1970s.”

This fact alone, that many studies the government used to approve glyphosate came from IBT, should have been grounds for banning glyphosate.

US Court Documents Show Monsanto Manager Led Cancer Cover Up for Glyphosate and PCBs

The same Monsanto manager, Dr. George Levinskas, who helped hide the carcinogenic potential of PCBs in the 1970s, has now been shown, in California court documents released Tuesday, to have also influenced the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the carcinogenic potential of the World’s most used herbicide – glyphosate – in the 1980s.

In March 2015 Sustainable Pulse uncovered a 30 year cover up by Monsanto and the EPA, related to the probable carcinogenicty of the World’s most used herbicide – glyphosate. This cover up has now been confirmed by court documents released by the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

U.S. Right to Know (USRTK) reported Wednesday that more than 50 lawsuits against Monsanto Co. are pending in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, filed by people alleging that exposure to Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide, caused them or their loved ones to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto covered up the risks.

On March 13th, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria ruled — over Monsanto’s objections — that documents obtained by plaintiffs through discovery could be unsealed.

The documents released are a treasure trove of information on how Monsanto influenced the EPA to change the March 4, 1985 classification of glyphosate as a Class C Carcinogen – showing suggestive potential of carcinogenic potential – to a Class E category which suggests “evidence of non-carcinogenicity for humans” in 1991.

This change in glyphosate’s classification occurred during the same period that Monsanto was developing its first Roundup-Ready (glyphosate-resistant) GM Crops.

Shortly after WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) report on glyphosate confirmed glyphosate probably causes cancer in March 2015, Sustainable Pulse discovered EPA documents from 1991 that showed how a Monsanto funded long-term glyphosate safety study on mice, which suggested carcinogenic potential according to the EPA experts, was ‘reviewed’ again until it mysteriously showed no carcinogenic potential.

The reason for the EPA review leading to the change in classification was unknown until this week. It is now clear however that the EPA was heavily influenced by Monsanto during the re-classification process.

Monsanto’s Cover-Up Man: Dr. George Levinskas

Dr. George Levinskas, who joined Monsanto in 1971 and became Director of Environmental Assessment and Toxicology, was a lead player in the cover up of the carcinogenic potential of the now banned PCBs in the 1970s.

Monsanto began commissioning animal toxicity studies on PCBs in the early 70s; the results did not look good. “Our interpretation is that the PCBs are exhibiting a greater degree of toxicity in this study than we had anticipated,” an executive wrote.

In 1975 a lab submitted its findings from a study using rats. An early draft said that in some cases, PCBs had caused tumors. Dr. Levinskas wrote to the lab’s director: “May we request that the report be amended to say ‘does not appear to be carcinogenic’.” The final report dropped all references to tumors.

The now deceased Dr. Levinskas has now been shown to have also been a lead player in hiding glyphosate’s carcinogenic potential. He wrote an internal company letter in 1985 stating the following: “Senior management at the EPA is reviewing a proposal to classify glyphosate as a class C “possible human carcinogen” because of kidney adenomas in male mice. Dr. Marvin Kuschner will review kidney sections and present his evaluation of them to the EPA in an effort to persuade the agency that the observed tumors are not related to glyphosate.”

The thirty-year glyphosate cancer cover up will go down in history as yet another failure, by the U.S. government, the EPA and worldwide regulators, to put the health of the general public before the need to protect and expand company profits.

Sugar companies to launch GMO education campaign

Two of the nation’s sugar companies will launch a $4 million online campaign this fall aimed at educating consumers about GMO crops and changing their perceptions of the technology...

...But, he added, it’s not intuitive to many consumers and that’s the reason for the “A Fresh Look” campaign, which will target moms who are deemed to be decision makers and engage them online.

GMO Crops Mean More Herbicide, Not Less

But a new study released by Food & Water Watch yesterday finds the goal of reduced chemical use has not panned out as planned. In fact, according to the USDA and EPA data used in the report, the quick adoption of genetically engineered crops by farmers has increased herbicide use over the past 9 years in the U.S. The report follows on the heels of another such study by Washington State University research professor Charles Benbrook just last year.

Both reports focus on "superweeds." It turns out that spraying a pesticide repeatedly selects for weeds which also resist the chemical. Ever more resistant weeds are then bred, able to withstand increasing amounts - and often different forms - of herbicide.

Reposting: Glyphosate’s Suppression of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes and Amino Acid Biosynthesis by the Gut Microbiome: Pathways to Modern Diseases, Anthony Samsel 1 and Stephanie Seneff 2,*

Abstract: Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup®, is the most popular herbicide used worldwide. The industry asserts it is minimally toxic to humans, but here we argue otherwise. Residues are found in the main foods of the Western diet, comprised primarily of sugar, corn, soy and wheat. Glyphosate's inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes is an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals. CYP enzymes play crucial roles in biology, one of which is to detoxify xenobiotics. Thus, glyphosate enhances the damaging effects of other food borne chemical residues and environmental toxins. Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body. Here, we show how interference with CYP enzymes acts synergistically with disruption of the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids by gut bacteria, as well as impairment in serum sulfate transport. Consequences are most of the diseases and conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. We explain the documented effects of glyphosate and its ability to induce disease, and we show that glyphosate is the “textbook example” of exogenous semiotic entropy: the disruption of homeostasis by environmental toxins.

The Monsanto Papers and Weedkiller in Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream—What's the Connection?

OCA’s news, and the latest revelations about Monsanto’s efforts to bury the truth about Roundup’s true toxicity have Ben & Jerry’s (and parent company Unilever) sweating. As for Monsanto, company officials weren’t too pleased when their internal emails went public. The New York Times reported that one Monsanto scientist wrote this in an internal email in 2001:

“If somebody came to me and said they wanted to test Roundup I know how I would react — with serious concern.”

New ‘Monsanto Papers’ Add To Questions Of Regulatory Collusion, Scientific Mischief

The attorneys posted the documents, which total more than 700 pages, on the website for the law firm Baum Hedlund Aristei Goldman, one of many firms representing thousands of plaintiffs who are pursuing claims against Monsanto.

“This is a look behind the curtain,” said Wisner. “These show that Monsanto has deliberately been stopping studies that look bad for them, ghostwriting literature and engaging in a whole host of corporate malfeasance. They (Monsanto) have been telling everybody that these products are safe because regulators have said they are safe, but it turns out that Monsanto has been in bed with U.S. regulators while misleading European regulators.”

The corporate disdain revealed by this film is nearly beyond belief. And our "trusted" watchdog agencies, both non-profit and government, are beholden to the biggest companies, accepting money in return for their silence about the dangers of animal and pharmaceutical products.

Some of the contentions in the documentary have been disputed, most notably the implication that sugar is not a major factor in diabetes, and that dairy is. Indeed there may be flaws in the documentary. But it clearly reveals the damaging behavior of the businesses and organizations that are contributing to human suffering.

What The Health

What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick.

What The Health is a surprising, and at times hilarious, investigative documentary that will be an eye-opener for everyone concerned about our nation’s health and how big business influences it.
Trailer and film:

Here's the law firm representing 40 people who are suing Monsanto

Attorneys Michael Baum and Brent Wisner of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, and Robert Kennedy, Jr. of Kennedy & Madonna, filed the Monsanto lawsuit on Wednesday in federal court in Los Angeles on behalf of Jack McCall’s widow, Teri McCall. The case number is 2:16-cv-01609.

The lawsuit, which seeks wrongful death and punitive damages, alleges that the Monsanto Company, based in St. Louis, Missouri, failed to adequately warn farmers that its blockbuster herbicide, Roundup, causes cancer. The Monsanto lawsuit also alleges that the agro-chemical giant designed a dangerous and defective product, committed gross negligence in the creation and promotion of Roundup, and defrauded millions of farmers, including Jack McCall, about the safety of the herbicide.

Roundup® [glyphosate] has been used as an all-purpose weed killer by farmers and agricultural workers since 1974. Discovery of glyphosate by Monsanto scientists came just before the multinational agrochemical corporation’s blockbuster pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)—a mainstay in American agriculture for many decades—was shown to be toxic to humans and banned in the U.S.

After using Roundup on his farm for nearly 30 years, in September 2015, Jack McCall was admitted to a hospital to treat swollen lymph nodes in his neck. That same day, he learned that the swelling was being caused by anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare and aggressive version of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. No one on his farm knew that Roundup was a carcinogen since, according to the lawsuit, Monsanto had told farmers for decades that Roundup was non-toxic to humans.

Seneff: “Fascinating history behind the retraction of Seralini's paper showing glyphosate & GM feed toxicity to rats at very low doses.”

Uncovered: Monsanto campaign to get Séralini study retracted

Use of “third party experts” is a classic public relations tactic perfected by the tobacco industry. It consists of putting industry-friendly messages into the mouths of supposedly “independent” experts, since no one would believe industry attempts to defend its own products. Back in 2012, GMWatch founder Jonathan Matthews exposed the industry links of the supposedly independent scientists who lobbied the journal editor to retract the Séralini paper. Now we have first-hand proof of Monsanto’s direct involvement.

In one document, Saltmiras reviews his own achievements within the company, boasting that he “Successfully facilitated numerous third party expert letters to the editor which were subsequently published, reflecting the numerous significant deficiencies, poor study design, biased reporting and selective statistics employed by Séralini. In addition, coauthored the Monsanto letter to the editor with [Monsanto employees] Dan Goldstein and Bruce Hammond.”

Saltmiras further writes of how “Throughout the late 2012 Séralini rat cancer publication and media campaign, I leveraged my relationship [with] the Editor i[n] Chief of the publishing journal… and was the single point of contact between Monsanto and the Journal.”

Another Monsanto employee, Eric Sachs, writes in an email about his efforts to galvanize scientists in the letter-writing campaign. Sachs refers to Bruce Chassy, a scientist who runs the pro-GMO Academics Review website. Sachs writes: “I talked to Bruce Chassy and he will send his letter to Wally Hayes directly and notify other scientists that have sent letters to do the same. He understands the urgency… I remain adamant that Monsanto must not be put in the position of providing the critical analysis that leads the editors to retract the paper.”

In response to Monsanto’s request, Chassy urged Hayes to retract the Séralini paper: “My intent was to urge you to roll back the clock, retract the paper, and restart the review process.”

Monsanto sold banned chemicals for years despite known health risks, archives reveal

Bill Sherman, the assistant attorney general for the US state of Washington – which is suing Monsanto for PCB clean-up costs potentially worth billions of dollars – said the archive contained damning evidence the state had previously been unaware of.

He told the Guardian: “If authentic, these records confirm that Monsanto knew that their PCBs were harmful and pervasive in the environment, and kept selling them in spite of that fact. They knew the dangers, but hid them from the public in order to profit.”

At 7:30: “In general there was a pattern of many more stories in recent years being embraced if they were seen as positive to the government administration and even certain corporations, than if there were stories that were pitched that could be perceived as negative to government administration and certain corporations...I think the change now is there are managers in New York who want to know how the story is going to come out and if it doesn’t come out the way they like, for many different reasons, it will as I’ve said, they’ll die the death of a thousand cuts.”

Former 25-year employee of EPA Office of Pesticide Programs and author Evaggelos Valliantos explains the politics of pesticides, antibiotics and EPA in two recent Huffington Post articles, Phasing Out Pesticides and Breeding Superbugs.

Phasing Out Pesticides

...He used to tell me, in great regret, that the government laboratories dedicated to protecting human health and the environment from pesticides were getting fewer and fewer.

Preston was probably the only government manager I remember with affection and respect. He calmly described the forces at work within and without EPA. Politics, he often said, was satisfying the industry. Bureaucrats had science on their side. With his assistance and encouragement, I learned the basic science and policy that govern pesticides.

I also learned pesticides are dangerous and useless for family farming. Why call them pesticides when they are biocides? In fact, these biocides are also chemical and biological weapons.

To some degree, I kept my private thoughts to myself – for twenty-five years. Yet, I could not suppress the truth. My memos to senior officials were full of facts and warnings about the failure and dangers of industrialized farming hooked on neurotoxins and other poisons.

Once retirement arrived in 2004, I spent the next several years in writing “Poison Spring: The Secret History of Pollution and the EPA” (2014).

The book is a great relief for me. Now, I said to all thinking men and women and, in particular, environmentalists, you have my story: neatly arranged between two covers. No more excuses of what is going on behind the closed doors of the industry and EPA. At great and measurable economic cost, disruption of my career, and risk to myself, I tell you what you need to know to get rid of pesticides and reform agriculture to a democratic and life-supporting civilization…

Breeding Superbugs

...I met Metcalf in the mid-1980s at a meeting at the US Environmental Protection Agency. He was angry. Perhaps he had second thoughts about inventing neurotoxins. He could see the farmers and the industry were misusing them. He told me he could not stand the audacious and ludicrous advertisements of the chemical industry on the supposed “safety” of its pesticide products. He said it only took a few free drinks to corrupt government officials. He kept urging EPA to get rid of dangerous pesticides and to be more sensitive to public health and the environment.

But the superbugs already in force in 1987 were proof that neither the EPA nor the US Food and Drug Administration (the two federal agencies responsible for the wholesomeness of the Nation’s food and the integrity of the natural world) had the guts to reign in the excesses of the industry, including the livestock farmers dumping antibiotics into the feed of farm animals.

Aspartame: Decades of Science Point to Serious Health Risks

In 1987, UPI published a series of investigative articles by Gregory Gordon reporting on these concerns, including early studies linking aspartame to health problems, the poor quality of industry-funded research that led to its approval, and the revolving-door relationships between FDA officials and the food industry. Gordon’s series is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the history of aspartame/NutraSweet:

Coming Soon – Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science

“Journalist Gillam exposes a plethora of scientific research, legal materials, and documentary evidence recovered from corporate and government resources to paint a damning picture of the peddling of glyphosate by Monsanto and other agribusinesses … Gillam expertly covers a contentious front where corporate malfeasance intersects with issues of public health and ecology.” Publishers Weekly

“Whitewash reads like a mystery novel, as Gillam skillfully uncovers Monsanto’s secretive strategies to convince countries around the world that its Roundup products were safe. The book unravels a tapestry of pesticide industry tricks to manipulate the scientific truths about their products while placing profits above human health and the environment. As someone who has experienced similar actions by corporations firsthand in my work far too often, I am hopeful that Carey’s book will be a wake-up call for more transparency about the dangers surrounding many chemicals in the marketplace.” Erin Brockovich

Our Litigation

U.S. Right to Know is investigating the food and agrichemical industries, and the secrets they hide about our food. We employ litigation as a tool for transparency, to protect consumers and public health.

The documents we have obtained thus far have generated media coverage about hidden industry payments and secret collaborations that undermine scientific, academic, political and regulatory institutions.

Scant oversight, corporate secrecy preceded U.S. weed killer crisis

As the crisis intensifies, new details provided to Reuters by independent researchers and regulators, and previously unreported testimony by a company employee, demonstrate the unusual way Monsanto introduced its product. The approach, in which Monsanto prevented key independent testing of its product, went unchallenged by the Environmental Protection Agency and nearly every state regulator.

Typically, when a company develops a new agricultural product, it commissions its own tests and shares the results and data with regulators. It also provides product samples to universities for additional scrutiny. Regulators and university researchers then work together to determine the safety of the product.

In this case, Monsanto denied requests by university researchers to study its XtendiMax with VaporGrip for volatility - a measure of its tendency to vaporize and drift across fields.

The researchers interviewed by Reuters - Jason Norsworthy at the University of Arkansas, Kevin Bradley at the University of Missouri and Aaron Hager at the University of Illinois - said Monsanto provided samples of XtendiMax before it was approved by the EPA. However, the samples came with contracts that explicitly forbade volatility testing.

"This is the first time I’m aware of any herbicide ever brought to market for which there were strict guidelines on what you could and could not do," Norsworthy said.

The researchers declined to provide Reuters a copy of the Monsanto contracts, saying they were not authorized to do so.

Reuters vs. UN Cancer Agency: Are Corporate Ties Influencing Science Coverage?

But in writing about the IARC decision, Kelland has ignored much of the published research backing the classification, and focused on industry talking points and criticisms of the scientists in seeking to diminish their analysis. Her reporting has relied heavily on pro-industry sources, while failing to disclose their industry connections; contained errors that Reuters has refused to correct; and presented cherry-picked information out of context from documents she did not provide to her readers.

Raising further questions about her objectivity as a science reporter are Kelland’s ties to the Science Media Centre (SMC), a controversial nonprofit PR agency in the UK that connects scientists with reporters, and gets its largest block of funding from industry groups and companies, including chemical industry interests.

Campbell Soup leaves GMA

Campbell Soup Co. will leave the Grocery Manufacturers Association by the end of the year over concerns that the trade association no longer represents its views. The move stems from GMA’s hardline stance on GMO labeling. Campbell Chief Executive Denise Morrison told investors earlier this week that the move was not for financial reasons but instead was “driven by purpose and principles.”

Campbell has long been vocal about increasing transparency of its ingredients. The company, which owns the Pepperidge Farm, Prego and V8 brands, split from the rest of the food industry in January 2016 with a commitment to label all of its products containing genetically modified ingredients. It also supported efforts to make such labeling mandatory. GMA at the time was still pushing for a prohibition on GMO disclosures on food products. "We have always believed that consumers have the right to know what’s in their food,” CEO Denise Morrison said in a memo to employees at the time on the company’s decision.

Keith Kloor’s Endearing Love Affair With GMOs

The public has known for some time that Keith Kloor loves GMOs. What they haven’t known, until now, is how hard he’s worked with industry-funded “experts” to present corporate talking points as journalism and then try to cover his tracks. An avalanche of documents released through court proceedings and freedom of information requests point to a coordinated effort by corporate front groups, scientists secretly funded by agrichemical industry giants, and allied reporters attempting to portray themselves as arbiters of scientific expertise while condemning critics of GMO technology as “antiscience.” While some of this story has been told, Kloor’s level of involvement has so far gone unremarked – and there have been no corrections or retractions of his work.

Monsanto Spin Doctors Target Cancer Scientist In Flawed Reuters Story

So yes, it was a big story that scored big points for Monsanto in the debate over glyphosate safety. But. drilling deeply into the sourcing and selective nature of the Reuters piece makes it clear the story is not only seriously flawed, but that it is part of an ongoing and carefully crafted effort by Monsanto and the pesticide industry to discredit IARC’s work.

Is Probing Whether An Agency Staffer Colluded With Monsanto

The inspector general’s move comes in response to a request from Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) for an investigation into whether the EPA staffer colluded with the agricultural giant to bias research on glyphosate, a key component of the product Roundup. His request was based on media reports of documents released in the course of a lawsuit against Monsanto alleging glyphosate causes cancer, and that the company may have spun research and hired scientists to cover this up.

“As you are aware, there is considerable public interest regarding allegations of such collusion,” wrote Inspector General Arthur A. Elkins Jr. in his response to Lieu, dated May 31. “As a result, I have asked the EPA OIG Office of Investigations to conduct an inquiry into several agency review-related matters.”

The Trump administration will attack overseas regulations that restrict the export of GMO crops and other products resulting from American technological innovation, said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer at the first meeting of a newly created interdepartmental task force on rural America. “We are going to bring cases at the WTO and other venues, we’re going to insist that any barrier be science-based, and the United States will increase exports,” he said.

European Commission freezes Bayer’s merger with Monsanto

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation on Bayer’s intended takeover of Monsanto.

Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager has expressed concerns that the proposed €56bn takeover will give rise to an oligopoly in the farming industry, rising costs for farmers and consumers. The Commission will announce the result of its investigation by January 8, 2018, Il Sole24 reports.

BREAKING: Impossible Foods is “Misleading Consumers” About its GMO Protein, FDA Rejects the Claim That it is Safe for Consumption

But as The New York Times reported today and as found in documents under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, information has been uncovered that raises very serious questions about the safety of the Impossible Burger.

“The way in which Impossible Foods is loosely and interchangeably using the word “heme” is misleading consumers. The average person with no scientific background would reasonably read the FAQ section of this website and think that the genetically-engineered heme in the Impossible Burger is ‘identical’ to the heme that humans have been consuming for hundreds of thousands of years in meat and other foods. This is categorically not true,” Michael Hansen, Ph.D. and Senior Scientist at Consumers Union, a division of Consumers Reports.

'Environmental Nightmare' After Thousands Of Atlantic Salmon Escape Fish Farm

Commercial fishing boats are scrambling to catch as many Atlantic salmon as they can after a net pen broke near Washington's Cypress Island. Fishers reported thousands of the non-native fish jumping in the water or washing ashore.

Survey: Reports of dicamba damage continue to spread nationally

Through surveys of state departments of agriculture, the findings identify at least 2,242 official investigations into dicamba damage nationwide, as of Aug. 10. Estimates from state extension weed scientists, meanwhile, show suspected dicamba damage has affected at least 3.1 million acres of soybeans overall — an area approaching the size of Connecticut.

Twenty-nine states make it illegal for counties and cities to pass seed laws [UPDATE]

“This bill should be viewed for what it is — a gag order on public debate,” says Kristina Hubbard, director of advocacy and communications at the Organic Seed Alliance, a national advocacy group, and a resident of Montana, which along with Texas passed a seed-preemption bill this year. “This thinly disguised attack on local democracy can be easily traced to out-of-state, corporate interests that want to quash local autonomy.”

EPA Gives Green Light to Pesticide That Sickens Farmworkers; Linked to Lower IQ in Children, Developmental Problems

...Glenn Fankhauser, agricultural commissioner of Kern County, said samples of cabbage and clothing have been taken to the state for lab testing. The main ingredient of Vulcan is chlorpyrifos, a toxic pesticide that was on course to be banned by the Obama administration before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided against implementing a ban in March.

...Chlorpyrifos is produced by Dow Chemicals and can still be used for agricultural purposes. Yet after a legal challenge by environmental groups, the EPA scientists stated that the pesticide was not safe for any use and proposed widening the ban.

...A subsequent ban of chlorpyrifos was rejected under the Trump administration. Scott Pruitt, administrator of the EPA said he denied the ban to provide “regulatory certainty to the thousands of American farms that rely on chlorpyrifos”. The EPA also said that there were “serious scientific concerns and substantive process gaps” in the plan to banish chlorpyrifos.

Bayer Monsanto Buyout, GMO Marijuana, Corporate Takeover of the Marijuana Industry

If Monsanto and Bayer follow their usual agribusiness model, he says, they’ll want to pharmaceuticalize THC, other cannabinoids, and terpenoids so you have to get a doctor’s prescription and buy marijuana compounds from corporations.

Heartbreaking Letter From Dying EPA Scientist Begs Monsanto “Moles” Inside The Agency To Stop Lying About Dangers Of RoundUp (Glyphosate)

...Jess, you and I have argued many times on CARC. You often argued about topics outside of your knowledge, which is unethical. Your trivial MS degree from 1971 Nebraska is far outdated, thus CARC science is 10 years behind the literature in mechanisms. For once in your life, listen to me and don’t play your political conniving games with the science to favor the registrants. For once do the right thing and don’t make decisions based on how it affects your bonus. You and Anna Lowit intimidated staff on CARC and changed MI ARC and IIASPOC final reports to favor industry. Chelators clearly disrupt calcium signaling, a key signaling pathway in all cellos and mediates tumor progression. Greg Ackerman is supposed to be our expert on mechanisms, but he never mentioned any of these concepts at CARC and when I tried to discuss it with him he put me off. Is Greg playing your political games as well, incompetent or does he have some conflict of interest of some kind? Your Nebraska colleague took industry funding, he clearly has a conflict of interest. Just promise me not to ever let Anna on the CARC committee, her decisions don’t make rational sense. If anyone in OPP is taking bribes, it is her.

I have cancer and I don’t want these serious issues in MED to go unaddressed before I go to my grave. I have done my duty.

The most extensive study to date on neonicotinoid pesticides concludes that they harm both honeybees and wild bees.

EU authorities broke their own rules and brushed aside evidence of cancer to keep glyphosate on the market

Commenting on his findings, Dr Clausing said, “What surprised me most was how obviously and widely the authorities violated their own rules. Seeing this made me angry. The authorities should be made accountable for their failure.”

Dr Clausing added, “The evidence that glyphosate is carcinogenic is so overwhelming that it should be banned.”

Glyphosate: Unsafe on any Plate

Food testing results and scientific reasons for concerns.

“For the first time in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals from the moment of conception until death…These chemicals are now stored in the bodies of the vast majority of human beings, regardless of age. They occur in the mother’s milk, and probably in the tissues of the unborn child.”1 Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

‘Food Freedom’ Advocates Claim Victory in Maine

Last month, Maine’s Governor Paul LePage signed into law a bill that gives municipalities the power to regulate direct farm-to-consumer sales within their own borders. It’s the third so-called “food freedom” bill—also often called “food sovereignty” bills—to successfully make its way into state law in the U.S.: the first one was signed in Wyoming in 2015, and the second in North Dakota this past April. A wide range of regulations can fall under the term food freedom, including cottage food laws that allow home cooks to sell their products to the public or donate rescued food without fear of liability. But food freedom proponents are hailing Maine’s new law as a groundbreaking win, and one they hope is emblematic of the future success of their movement.

Ukraine Agreed to a Monsanto “Land Grab” to Get a $17 Billion Loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - 2015

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) is helping biotech run the latest war in Ukraine. Make no mistake that what is happening in the Ukraine now is deeply tied to the interests of Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, and other big players in the poison food game.

Previously, there was a ban on private sector land ownership in the country – but it was lifted ‘just in time’ for Monsanto to have its way with the Ukraine.

The GMO Agenda Takes a Menacing Leap Forward with EPA’s Silent Approval of Monsanto/Dow’s RNAi Corn

While you may not have made up your mind on the dangers of GMOs, you likely feel entitled to know when you’re consuming a food that is the product of laboratory research. For this reason, I am reporting on Monsanto’s latest food technology, unfortunately, already in the pipeline. And quite silently so. I write this with a certain degree of solemnity, if not also a tinge of regret, because, for three years, I have heard rumblings of Monsanto’s next project - RNA interference technology. It was actually the late Heidi Stevenson, my friend, colleague, and founder of the platform Gaia Health, who first alerted me to the dangers of RNA interference-based tinkering with our food supply when she reported on the near disastrous approval of GMO wheat using RNA interference technology in Australia. Thankfully a few brave scientists and informed public stood up and, together, averted the disaster. But since then, both the dangers and the breakneck speed of development of this technology have gone largely ignored, even among activists deep in the non-GMO movement. In order to truly appreciate the gravity of the situation, and why the EPA's approval of RNAi corn intended for human consumption, is so concerning, it will first require a little background information on the fascinating topic of non-coding small RNAs, and their formidable relevance to our health.

How Non-Coding, Small RNAs Link Together The Entire Biosphere

One of the most important discoveries of our time is that all plants, including those we use for food and animal feed, contain a wide range of RNA molecules capable of inhibiting gene expression or translation. These non-coding RNA molecules neutralize targeted messenger RNA molecules (mRNAs), which prevents their translation into a protein, i.e. they “silence genes.”

Compelling research has surfaced suggesting that not only do these genome-regulating small RNA molecules exist in our foods, but that they are capable of surviving digestion, and being absorbed into our bodies fully intact where they alter, suppress or silence genes, post-transcriptionally. Moreover, some of these small RNAs -- primarily microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) -- are believed to be cross-kingdom mediators of genetic information, making it possible for RNAs in one species impacting many others through both their active and passive exposure to them.

Food therefore is essentially an epigenetic modifier of gene expression, making it a form of information, and not only a source of bodily building blocks and caloric energy, as conventionally understood. As such, any significant changes to food or feed staples within our food chain could have powerful impacts on the physiological fate of those consuming them, essentially rewriting the functionality of our genomic hardware via software like changes in RNA profiles. The entire biosphere, therefore, is held together in a web-like fashion through these molecular RNA messengers, lending a plausible mechanism to the biotic aspect of Lovelock and Margulis’ Gaia theory of Earth as a self-regulating, meta-organism. GMOs Revealed

Did you catch last night’s episode of GMOs Revealed? You can watch it until 9 p.m. tonight.

Dr. Gerry Curatola, DDS, biologic dentist, author and Associate Professor at NYU, talks about fluoride, a waste product, effects on our oral microbiome health, toxins like glyphosate’s effect on our health, poison warnings on toothpaste because it has killed small children consuming it, lowers IQ, leaves teeth prone to more decay, bad for our bones, amplifies lead (Flint, Michigan), causes fluorisis, and it doesn’t prevent cavities. He says that dental students are lied to about the safety of fluoride. Who sells this waste product added to our water? Monsanto.

In the second half of this episode, Dr. Stephanie Seneff talks about sulfate and glyphosate’s role in robbing it from our bodies, rising cases in brain anencephaly, breast cancer, fertility, etc. She also gives her credentials and how she got interested in going back to biology and how her computer expertise fits into the puzzle of figuring things out. Also, her funding source, a Taiwan computer company and why, and she talks about how Monsanto doesn’t give very much money to MIT but gives big bucks to big agricultural schools. She says these ag schools should be doing the research she and Samsel are doing but if they did, they’d lose their funding from Big Ag.

If you missed this episode (8), you can catch it this weekend when they run a free weekend catch up. I highly recommend Episode 1 and Episode 8.

'Industry Friendly' EPA Completes Review of 600 New Chemicals

Trump-appointed EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said, "I am happy to report that the backlog of new chemical reviews is eliminated." Richard Denison, a lead senior scientist with the Environmental Defense Fund, said the move puts the industry's demands for ready market access above public health protection. Denison said the EPA sidestepped the Frank Lautenberg Act, a critical environmental law signed by President Obama in 2016 that overhauled the "badly broken" Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) of 1976. The Lautenberg Act resulted in a temporary backlog of hundreds of new chemical notices. But in recent months, EPA staff have faced "relentless pressure from the chemical industry—and internally from new industry-friendly senior management (Scott Pruitt and the rest of the Trump team)—not only to speed up reviews, but to return the program to its pre-Lautenberg practices," Denison said.

Trump's Scott Pruitt is making chemical corporations great again, and making the rest of America toxic again.

New Dicamba Herbicide Wreaks Havoc Across the US

Story at-a-glance

The rapid emergence of glyphosate-resistant superweeds has led to the development and use of even more toxic herbicides, including dicamba, which has been clearly linked to non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Dicamba is an extremely potent and volatile toxin that is banned during growing season. Monsanto’s new weed killer, XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology, designed for use with dicamba-resistant seeds, is supposed to be less prone to vaporization and drift.

Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee are now investigating thousands of dicamba damage reports; an estimated 3.1 million acres have been damaged by dicamba drift this season.

AOTW - Oppose Release of Genetically Engineered Moth in NY

Help stop a dangerous plan hatched in New York to control a caterpillar in cabbage. Under the plan, up to 10,000 genetically engineered (GE) male diamondback moths (DBMs) will be released each week during the cabbage planting cycle (which runs about three to four months). According to USDA, “The males are genetically engineered with a lethal gene that they pass on to females when they mate.”

Because of the widespread release, this plan –a first of its kind in food crops– will contaminate organic farms with genetically engineered material. And, this is all being done based on a cursory environmental assessment without an in-depth environmental impact assessment.

This is an issue that affects all of us –not just New Yorkers–because the moths do not respect state boundaries, and this action would set a precedent for other states

Earthworm Numbers Dwindle, Threatening Soil Health

Fewer than 30 earthworms are found per square meter on intensively farmed fields. But on organic farms, where the fields are rarely ploughed, up to 450 worms live in the same area, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

That's bad news according to agronomists and gardeners. A thriving earthworm population is an indication of healthy soil. And the retreat of the species is so evident the WWF has published an "Earthworm Manifesto" to publicize the faith of these dirt-dwellers.

Canadians Unknowingly Eating GM Salmon

“No one except AquaBounty knows where the GM salmon are,” said Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN). “The company did not disclose where the GM salmon fillets were sold or for what purpose, and we’re shocked to discover that they’ve entered the market at this time.”

Recovery on Tinker Creek could take years after chemical spill caused massive fish kill

It took just a few hours for a chemical spill to cause what is believed to be one of the worst fish kills ever recorded in Virginia. But it could be several years before aquatic life on Tinker Creek returns to normal.

Court Overturns Montgomery County, MD Pesticide Restrictions, Groups Say Decision Defies Local Authority to Protect Health

(Beyond Pesticides, August 3, 2017) A Circuit Court for the state of Maryland on Thursday struck down key components of the landmark Healthy Lawns Act pesticide ordinance passed in Montgomery County, Maryland in 2015. The court’s decision, issued by Judge Terrence McGann, eliminates pesticide use restrictions on private property, but does not touch provisions limiting toxic pesticides used on public, county owned land.

“Poison Papers” and Major Monsanto Document Release Exposes Toxicity and Collusion

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. noted that with this disclosure, “We can now prove that all Monsanto’s claims about glyphosate’s safety were myths concocted by amoral propaganda and lobbying teams.” Kennedy noted that federal agencies that were supposed to protect public health instead protected Monsanto’s toxic products from public oversight.

If you have to smoke, buy non gmo, organic brands, "Signal," and "American Spirit." Signal is less than half the price of American Spirit and you can find Signal at the local teepee store.

“In addition to being ‘All Natural’ with ‘No Additives,’ our premium tobacco product is produced free of any GMO plants. We are proud to say that our non-GMO tobacco consists of only tobacco and water.”

GMO Insulin Increases Morbidity and Mortality in Type 2 Diabetics

Is Genetically Modified Insulin to Blame?

This double diabetes, or development of autoimmune insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes following treatment of insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes, as well as the host of other adverse sequelae associated with insulin use in type 2 diabetics, may be due in part to the genetic recombinant insulin preparations that are the brainchild of the biotech industry.

The recommendation aims to protect plants vulnerable to the chemical and, if adopted, would prevent most Arkansas farmers from spraying dicamba weed killers on growing soybeans, a key selling point for products manufactured by Monsanto Co, BASF and DuPont.

GMOs Revealed, Episode 10 available until 9 p.m. tonight

“...and what she has found is the scariest thing I’ve seen in my entire career.”

At 40:00 - 59:00, a must see interview, Dr. Les Berenson, M.D. on the effects of gmo foods on our health. He shows the graphs that Scientist and Physicist Nancy Swanson compiled on diabetes, alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, obesity, etc. Flat lines prior to 1996. 1996 on after gmo crops were planted, the rates started going up. He says, “it’s staggering.”

Sweet corn is non-GMO, right? Read on!

New data from a simple survey of 55 vendors in 14 states indicates farmers are planting more GMO sweet corn for the fresh market (corn on the cob) than previously thought. IRT volunteers visited both farmer’s markets and grocery stores. 31 vendors confirmed the sweet corn was GMO; 24 confirmed that it was conventional non-GMO. Not included in the data is the availability of organically grown sweet corn.

Dr. Don Huber, Professor Emeritus of plant pathology at Purdue University and one of the leading GMO experts in the world.

"Future historians might well look back and write about our time, not about how many pounds of pesticide we did or did not apply; but how willing we are to sacrifice our children and jeopardize future generations with this massive experiment (that we call genetic engineering) that is based on false promises and "flawed science" just to benefit the "bottom line" of a commercial enterprise."

GMOs Revealed

ALL episodes will be available for unlimited viewing from NOW until Sunday, September 10th at midnight EST.

Just twelve days after Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration for unlawfully withholding a required study on the feasibility of electronic disclosure for labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods, the USDA publicly released the study yesterday.

On August 25th, CFS filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump Administration for its failure to comply with the 2016 federal law on the labeling of GE food. The federal GE food law requires USDA to establish federal standards for labeling by July 2018. The just-released study had to be completed by law by July 2017, in order to inform the agency’s ultimate decision.

“While we are pleased that USDA finally released the digital disclosure study in response to our lawsuit, the study unfortunately confirms our concerns that digital disclosure is discriminatory and burdensome, as opposed to clear, on-package GE labeling.” said George Kimbrell, CFS Legal Director. “Now we must ensure that USDA follows the GE labeling law and requires disclosure that will be accessible to all.”

One of the most controversial aspects of the law is how it will require companies to label GE foods, and whether companies will be able to forgo clear, on-package labeling through the use of QR codes and other digital disclosures. The new federal law allows USDA to consider several options: on-package text, a GE symbol on packages, or “electronic or digital disclosures,” which would require shoppers to use a smart phone to scan packages to access a website or call a 1-800 number for every single product to find out if it was produced with genetic engineering.

The USDA study found, as CFS has long warned, that:

· Technological challenges disproportionately impact low-income earners, rural residents, and Americans over the age of 65.

· Consumers are unfamiliar with QR codes or do not know that digital links contain food information.

· Many of the more than 100 apps on the market that scan QR codes are not intuitive to use and include pop-up ads, causing consumer confusion.

· Consumers may not have equipment capable of scanning digital links on their own, and in most cases there is not a viable alternative provided by retailers.

· Consumers without phones are unlikely to find in-store scanners available and landlines do not provide a practical way of getting the information.

· Consumers may be unable to connect to broadband, or connect at a speed that is so slow that they cannot load information, particularly rural and low-income consumers.

· In-store scanners may be cost prohibitive for small and rural retailers and provide limited benefit due to limited consumer understanding and rapidly changing technology.

· The study also concluded that “offline alternatives are necessary for consumers who lack access to a scanning device or broadband.”

“Americans deserve nothing less than clear on-package labeling, the way food has always been labeled,” continued Kimbrell. “Allowing companies to hide genetically engineered ingredients behind a website or QR code is discriminatory and unworkable.”

It is unclear how USDA plans to comply with the federal law’s other mandates for the study, including that the public be given the right to comment on it.

In the United States, there has never been a food labeling requirement met by “QR” codes instead of on-package labeling. Even if access to digital disclosure was universal, a shopper would have to scan each item s/he is shopping for on any given shopping trip (which for a family of 4 could easily amount to more than 50 items). This would be an undue burden on the consumer and greatly impede access to information that is currently required for all other forms of food labeling. On-package labeling is simple, quick, and effective. As the USDA study clearly shows, QR codes, websites, and 1-800 numbers are not.

GM Moths Released in US for First Time: A Major Step for ‘Frankenbugs’

Biotech company Oxitec announced on Sept. 5 that it has started releasing genetically modified (GM) moths in Geneva, New York.

The moth has been genetically modified to produce offspring that will die before reaching maturity. It has a kind of genetic “kill switch.” Concerned groups like GeneWatch and the Center for Food Safety have pointed out that the kill switch is not 100 percent effective. Some GM moths survive and breed with the wild population, perhaps changing the wild population irreversibly and in unintended ways.

Cornell diamondback moth is just another GM failure

"Cornell's diamond back moth releases are not a credible approach to tackling this pest, the moths are just another GM failure", said Dr Wallace. "The releases are a desperate attempt by a failing company to convince investors that it has a worthwhile product".

Gene-edited camelina cleared by USDA

The USDA has determined that a camelina variety that’s gene-edited to increased oil content doesn’t fall under its regulatory jurisdiction.

The Center for Food Safety, a nonprofit that’s critical of USDA, is concerned that USDA didn’t study the gene-edited cultivar’s potential to cross-pollinate with conventional camelina, which may hinder exports.

South Korean government to shut down GMO-related development project

On the morning of Sept. 1, the Rural Development Administration (RDA) and the North Jeolla Residents’ Campaign against GMOs signed an agreement at the RDA office in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, in which the RDA agreed “not to promote the production of genetically modified crops” and promised to shut down its Genetically Modified Crop Development Project by the end of the year. The project had been suspected of being designed to promote the commercialization of genetically modified crops.

6 Ways Cornell University is acting like a PR firm for junk food, GMOs and pesticides

Consumers lose when professors get their marching orders from Big Ag and Big Food

T. Colin Campbell, professor emeritus at Cornell who formerly taught a course on plant-based eating at the university (which was abruptly canceled without his knowledge), said he is disappointed with the industry taking over academic interests at the college. "Cornell is my home. I love the university. But in reality, what they've done is abhorrent, it's disgusting, and I'd like to label this an assault on academic freedom. That's really what it comes to."

American agricultural suicide - Retired EPA Senior Executive

These recommendations will favor small farms over large corporate farming. Revitalizing farming communities would be a good thing. Will it happen soon? Not at the Federal level, with a regulation-averse White House and an anti-EPA head of EPA. Progress will have to come at the state and local level, from the people who know how to farm properly, wanting to get off the pesticide treadmill. Not just organic farmers, but also wise farmers.

Once, in the early years of the environmental movement, we knew these things. We tried to make them happen. It is not all about profit. It is about moving back from agricultural suicide toward agricultural health. Our time will come.

Dr. Tyrone Hayes - Atrazine

For the truly skeptic folks who just don't believe our government or industry would allow harm to come to us, I urge you to look at this scientists story. He was hired to do a study and they didn't like the outcome and wanted to squash it. Dr. Hayes tells his story...

A Valuable Reputation - After Tyrone Hayes said that a chemical was harmful, its maker pursued him.

US: It's Not Easy Being Green: Are weed-killers turning frogs into hermaphrodites?

Hayes says that he was naive about how his findings would be received. After reporting his discovery to the other panelists studying atrazine, Hayes argued with them and with Syngenta for months about what to do next. There were protracted discussions about the statistical relevance of the voice-box data and disagreements over the pace of follow-up studies. Hayes was asked for repeated revisions of the “final” report on his results. He saw all of this as an effort to discourage him from publishing his findings. In November 2000 he quit the panel. In his letter of resignation he complained that were he to remain on the team, “recent history suggests that I will spend a great deal of effort preparing reports that will not be finalized in a timely manner, let alone published.” He added, “It will appear to my colleagues that I have been part of a plan to bury important data.”

Attempts to evade the FOIA law have become so routine that the U.S. Government Accountability Office is convening a team now to begin a broad audit of FOIA compliance at federal agencies. The GAO review will get underway this month, according to the GAO.

The investigation comes in response to a directive issued by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, congressional bodies that have oversight of FOIA operations. And it comes after a damning report from the House committee that found the culture of the executive branch of the federal government "encourages an unlawful presumption in favor of secrecy when responding to Freedom of Information Act requests.”

A Short History of Glyphosate

The true cost of US food identified in new report

Patrick Holden, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Food Trust said, “More than a year after our conference, at a time when governments are beginning to take action on pollution in transport, with plans for a ban on new diesel and petrol cars by 2040, food producers remain largely financially unaccountable for the terrible damage that current systems are inflicting on the environment and public health.

This Tiny Country Feeds the World

Almost two decades ago, the Dutch made a national commitment to sustainable agriculture under the rallying cry “Twice as much food using half as many resources.” Since 2000, van den Borne and many of his fellow farmers have reduced dependence on water for key crops by as much as 90 percent. They’ve almost completely eliminated the use of chemical pesticides on plants in greenhouses, and since 2009 Dutch poultry and livestock producers have cut their use of antibiotics by as much as 60 percent."

It certainly calls into question the fear-mongering narratives put forth by agrochemical giants -- which also often mock urban farming.

New policy resolution on consumer concerns about new genetic engineering techniques

Today, TACD published a new resolution on consumer concerns about new genetic engineering techniques. Consumers have right to know when new genetic engineering techniques are used, including in their food, but companies are lobbying to exempt such products from regulation. A number of new genetic engineering techniques have been developed which were not in use when current laws on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were drafted.

A new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine "assessed the nutritional quality of products participating in "Box Tops for Education" ("Box Tops"), one of the largest national brand marketing programs in schools."

The study's conclusion:

"Fewer than one third of Box Tops foods met the Smart Snacks standards. Schools should consider whether the benefit of participation outweighs the harm of exposing kids to unhealthful marketing. Alternatively, schools could opt not to participate unless companies limit redeemable products to household items or healthful options meeting the Smart Snacks standards.

Box Tops Help Big Food’s Bottom Line

Earlier this month, the Journal of the American Medical Association published an editorial by Dr. Jennifer L. Harris and public health dietitian Tracy Fox titled, “Food and Beverage Marketing In Schools: Putting Student Health at the Head of the Class.” In it, the authors write that “marketing in schools is one tool in the food companies’ diverse toolbox to encourage children and adolescents to consume their brands and recruit lifelong loyal customers.” They note that the school environment provides “an optimal setting” for companies to reach youth and that marketing in schools “implies the school’s endorsements of the products.”

One of the most well-recognized examples of this sort of covert marketing is General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program, which launched in 1996 and has has earned $525 million for participating schools since its inception.

1. Attack legitimate science

Should nutrition scientists take food-industry funding?

Most of what we know about the effects of sponsorship comes from a very large body of research on funding by the cigarette, chemical, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. The results of this research are remarkably consistent: they demonstrate that industry funding influences the design, interpretation, and outcome of research.

The train has left the station. Big bucks interests – big pharma, big medical centers, big booze – have seen an opening. And they’ve seen it’s not that difficult, or expensive, to sidle up next to journalism efforts and to buy the best PR that money can buy.

Glyphosate-free certification debuts—and brands jump on board

The Detox Project’s fledgling certification program tests raw ingredients and finished products for glyphosate residue.

“We asked, how can we move the industry to start focusing on the problems associated with glyphosate and other toxic chemicals?” says Rowlands, who notes that while vital to the natural industry, the USDA Organic seal and Non-GMO Project Verification seal don’t test finished products for glyphosate residue. “We thought there was big room in the marketplace for such a certification.”

Seneff: “I have published papers on synergistic toxicity of glyphosate with mercury and aluminum. This article is proposing all three of these as a cause of the epidemic we're experiencing in early-onset Alzheimer's, and I agree!”

The “Silent Epidemic” of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s

So what accounts for the remaining roughly 90 percent of people with early-onset Alzheimer’s? The study by Pritchard and Rosenorn-Lanng suggests “environmental factors.”1 Although the study did not specify which environmental factors, some of these could include greater exposure to petrochemicals and toxic herbicides and insecticides.18

Monsanto Conceals Liver Toxicity of Glyphosate Herbicide Formulants

Here was his comment:

“This is very interesting and indeed quite damning with even Monsanto expressing concerns about the potential liver toxicity of Round formulations compared to glyphosate alone.

We would certainly agree with them based on our recently published results!

From my side this makes studies comparing the toxicity of Roundup and adjuvants in formulations a matter of even greater urgency. If the adjuvants at real world levels of ingestion (and we know precious little about this right now!) are a serious source of long term toxicity then we are in even greater trouble than with any active ingredient such as glyphosate since they are found in all pesticides and a huge range of domestic products!” -Dr. Michael Antoniou

This is proof that Monsanto knew that the formulants could cause acute liver toxicity. How do they sleep at night?

This final point is huge. The formulants being a source of serious long-term toxicity is even bigger than glyphosate herbicides being harmful. We have been after glyphosate herbicides like a dog on a bone because it is the most commonly used in the world and 80% of GMOs are engineered to withstand glyphosate. The fact is however, that the formulants, also known as the adjuvants or surfactants, or simply the other ingredients besides glyphosate in the herbicide product, are acknowledged by the Monsanto scientist to be an “issue” which would have to be carefully managed, clearly manipulated. The formulants are likely in every herbicide on the market!

At 33:00, update from Zen Honeycutt from Moms Across America, glyphosate in vaccines.

Weeding Out Vaccine Toxins: MMR, Glyphosate, and the Health of a Generation By Stephanie Seneff, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Vaccines can become contaminated in many ways. One potential source of contamination is the animal tissue (chicken embryo, fetal bovine serum, monkey kidney, etc.) that is used as a culture medium to grow the viruses contained in vaccines. The measles virus for the MMR is grown on gelatin made from the bones and ligaments of commercially raised cows and pigs, animals that have been fed a steady diet of Roundup Ready corn and soy feed. Gelatin is also used as a stabilizer in vaccines, creating another possible route of contamination.

As Roundup producer Monsanto itself has reported, the residue from glyphosate tends to accumulate in the bones, marrow, and collagen-rich ligaments of animals. Anthony Samsel confirmed this finding in his own study of the bones, marrow, and other parts of pigs and cows, as well as the derived bovine gelatin.

Seneff: “Quite a story here by Levi Quackenboss! Be prepared to be entertained and outraged!”

Stop injecting weed killer into your kids - Who’s ready to get pissed off tonight? As if there isn’t enough going on right now.

Zen came back to the FDA this past summer of 2017 with a Freedom of Information Act request (FOIA) and wanted all documents related to their conversation around her alert that glyphosate is in vaccines. She believes they did test and they do know Roundup is in childhood shots. As their answer to her FOIA request, the FDA had the audacity to send Zen 56 pages that had been blacked out:

Then, in May of 2016, I made my own FOIA request about the use of genetically modified soy– which is designed to withstand a bloodbath of weed killer– in vaccines. I made it very specific: three vaccines, the brands were named, and the date range was four and a half years starting in January 2010. The FDA called me on the phone and the price was astronomical, so I decided to limit my request to one vaccine. Then the FDA sent me this letter about the price of searching for one vaccine:

The long talk was broken down into smaller segments. This particular blog covers the first part, showing link between glyphosate in the gut leading to to autism in the brain.

This is the second part of the interview where Stephanie Seneff speaks with me on glyphosate.

Stephanie Seneff believes glyphosate in our foods and vaccines to be the first suspect item behind this epidemic of disaster.

Dysbiosis: Does Your Dog Have Leaky Gut?

3 Primary Causes Of Leaky Gut

1. Poor Diet
Specifically highly processed, grain based foods containing wheat, rice, spelt and soy, food additives and preservatives; the lectin found in unsprouted grains; sugar; genetically modified foods (GMOs); pasteurized dairy; and meat from stressed factory-farmed animals.

2. Drugs And Other Toxins
This category includes the unnecessary use of steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), deworming drugs, flea and tick treatments (many contain pesticides) and antibiotics (leading to an imbalance of healthy gut flora, also known as dysbiosis).

3. Over-vaccination
When the body is forced to respond to a vaccine to which it has already established antibodies, this wreaks havoc on the immune system and can cause a number of chronic diseases.

Without Prejudice – Glyphosate - Glyphosate ( Round Up type products ) Toxicity to Animals

...As a practicing Large Animal Veterinarian I have serious concerns regarding feeding animals feed that contains glyphosate.

I have listed cases below and have seen many more with a glyphosate relationship where removal of glyphosate containing feed with no other treatment has solved the problem...

Comments regarding glyphosate toxicity to animals…

...The chelating ability of glyphosate is very important Animals with glyphosate toxicity frequently show manganese and cobalt deficiency...

...The problem here for animals is that Round Up is sprayed on the crop while it is growing to kill weeds and thus glyphosate is in the feed that animals eat These crops are often sprayed 2x and many are sprayed 4x during the growing season…

The Toxins That Affected Your Great-Grandparents Could Be In Your Genes - transgenerational epigenetics

Biologist Michael Skinner has enraged the chemical community and shocked his peers with his breakthrough research

...And, startlingly, whatever disease pathway a chemical was opening in the rats’ fur-covered bodies, it did not begin or end at a mutation in the genetic code. Skinner and his team found instead that as the toxins flooded in, they altered the pattern of simple molecules called methyl groups that latch onto DNA in the fetus’ germ-line cells, which would eventually become its eggs or sperm. Like burrs stuck to a knit sweater, these methyl molecules interfered with the functioning of the DNA and rode it down through future generations, opening each new one to the same diseases. These burrs, known to be involved in development, persisted for generations. The phenomenon was so unexpected that it has given rise to a new field, with Skinner an acknowledged leader, named transgenerational epigenetics, or the study of inherited changes that can’t be explained by traditional genetics.

A study by Skinner and colleagues published last year in the journal PLOS One has upped the ante considerably. The burrs were not just haphazardly attached, Skinner found. Instead, they fastened themselves in particular arrangements. When he bathed the insides of his pregnant rats in bug spray, jet fuel and BPA, the plastics component recently banned from baby bottles, each exposure left a distinct pattern of methyl group attachments that persisted in the great-grandchildren of exposed rats.

Not only is your great-grandmother’s environment affecting your health, Skinner concluded, but the chemicals she was exposed to may have left a fingerprint that scientists can actually trace…

Farmer wants a revolution: 'How is this not genocide?'

...“When you look at the As – autism, ADHD, all the other auto-immune diseases – their take off is a 95% correlation to these chemicals being introduced. The evidence is that it affects the gut and the immune system, though it is not the sole factor, and it is a complex thing. But it is that gut that drives our whole immune system, it is our second brain.”

...Massy is among scientists who believe we have entered a new geological epoch, the life-threatening Anthropocene, where human impact has permanently altered the Earth’s geology and sustaining systems, causing ecological destruction and extinction of species. “It is the greatest crisis the planet and humanity has ever faced,” he says, sitting at his kitchen table in country New South Wales. “It makes a world war look like a little storm in a teacup. And we are in denial.”...

...The human element is the problem, the learning how to live tuned to its rhythms, to get out of its way, to listen to the land. “I say confidently that not many farmers can read the landscape. For them to change they have got to admit they have been wrong for most of their lives. The thing that is challenging about it is that you have got to be totally flexible to adjustment and really get your mind into how nature works and be able to change tactics.”...

Peer-reviewed studies on endocrine disruption excluded from EU glyphosate assessment

Tweedale told GMWatch, “Two were excluded by a full-text evaluation of relevance to the study question. A further five were excluded by a full-text evaluation of reliability. But the remaining 97 (93%) were excluded just by screening the title and/or abstract – in other words, before any evaluation of study quality was done. The number of published studies deemed reliable enough to be a key study, i.e. to set a safe dose or make another risk assessment decision, was precisely zero.”

EFSA failed to challenge this mass disposal of scientific data.

Conclusion: Interestingly, no significant pathology was detected in the F1 generation, but a significant increase in disease and pathology was observed in the F3 generation atrazine lineage male and female rats. A transgenerational increase in testis disease, lean phenotype, behavior motor hyperactivity, and increase in multiple disease susceptibility was observed.

France Set to Phase Out Glyphosate Herbicides over Next 5 Years

However, Philippe said the French government had asked the farm and environment ministries to propose by the end of the year “a plan to move away from glyphosate in light of the current research and available alternatives for farmers,” signalling a readiness to accept a gradual phasing out.

A European Commission source said an EU vote due on Oct. 5-6 on the licence had been postponed for at least a month. A failure to renew the licence by the end of the year would see a ban kick in automatically on Jan. 1, 2018.

Reposting, from September 2016: Glyphosate Found in Childhood Vaccines

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto's flagship herbicide Roundup and hundreds of other herbicides, has been found in vaccines. Moms Across America received preliminary screening results from Microbe Inotech Laboratories Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri, which showed:

MMR II (Merk) vaccine had 2.671 parts per billion (ppb) of glyphosate
DTap Adacel (Sanofi Pasteur) vaccine had 0.123 ppb of glyphosate
Influenza Fluvirin (Novaris) 0.331 ppb of glyphosate
HepB Energix-B (Glaxo Smith Kline) 0.325 ppb of glyphosate
Pneumonoccal Vax Polyvalent Pneumovax 23 (Merk) had 0.107 ppb of glyphosate
The MMR II vaccine had levels up to 25 times higher than the other vaccines. Following our test, additional independent tests have confirmed these findings at or above the same levels. The tests were conducted using the ELISA method.

Ivy League Corruption and Cruelty

In 1977, EPA received a letter from a woman who worked at Stanford Research Institute, which tested pesticides for the giant British oil and chemical company, Shell. This important letter carefully documents corrupt scientific practices favoring the approval of Shell pesticides in the United States. The letter makes Stanford Research Institute and Shell responsible for these unethical practices.

Stanford University created SRI in 1946. SRI worked like a lab for tobacco and petroleum companies. In 1970, it became independent.

Labs have been a permanent mechanism of the infrastructure of pesticides and agribusiness. They keep chemical companies and industrialized farmers in business.

This letter highlights the corruption enveloping Shell and SRI preparing pesticides for government approval. It did not matter that their pesticides would poison our food and the natural world.

I quote the 1977 letter…

U.S. EPA's Chlorpyrifos Decision Spurs Pushback

But under the Trump Administration, EPA reversed its decision. In March, just weeks after EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt took the helm of the agency, he denied the 2007 petition to ban chlorpyrifos. EPA now claims that the science related to the neurodevelopmental risks of chlorpyrifos in children is uncertain. The agency plans to complete its health assessment of the insecticide by Oct. 1, 2022.

The great nutrient collapse - The atmosphere is literally changing the food we eat, for the worse. And almost nobody is paying attention.

What Loladze found is that scientists simply didn’t know. It was already well documented that CO2levels were rising in the atmosphere, but he was astonished at how little research had been done on how it affected the quality of the plants we eat. For the next 17 years, as he pursued his math career, Loladze scoured the scientific literature for any studies and data he could find. The results, as he collected them, all seemed to point in the same direction: The junk-food effect he had learned about in that Arizona lab also appeared to be occurring in fields and forests around the world. “Every leaf and every grass blade on earth makes more and more sugars as CO2 levels keep rising,” Loladze said. “We are witnessing the greatest injection of carbohydrates into the biosphere in human history―[an] injection that dilutes other nutrients in our food supply.”

Seneff: “Dr. Mercola interviews Gerry Koenig on GGT and iron overload. GGT is an enzyme that breaks down glutathione, and it is induced by glyphosate. Furthermore, it is a strong predictor of many diseases, including heart disease, renal disease, diabetes and cancer. The way I see it, we face simultaneous iron overload and iron deficiency when we're chronically exposed to glyphosate, because glyphosate disrupts the body's natural mechanisms to transport and deliver iron safely.”

USDA Enforcement Failures Lead to Fake Organic Imports

The inspector general’s report adds that the confusion at the ports is so deep that some “organic” shipments — legitimate or not — are fumigated after arrival with pesticides prohibited under USDA organic rules.

The investigators visited seven U.S. ports and discovered, through documents and interviews, that if an organic shipment shows evidence of a pest or disease and “the shipment’s owner elects to treat the organic agricultural products, they are treated using the same methods and substances used for conventional products. There are no special treatment methods for organic products. This practice results in the exposure of organic agricultural products to” prohibited substances.

Why We Can't Lose Hope: Dr. David Suzuki Speaks Out

David Suzuki: Hope is all I have. And it’s not a Pollyannaish, “oh don’t worry, good things will happen, or they’ve always happened,” or anything like that. I believe that we’re so ignorant we can’t even say “it’s too late.” A lot of my colleagues are saying it’s too late; we’ve passed too many critical tipping points to go back, and all of the signs on the curves are very, very dire.

I use, as an example to support my hope, the most prized species of salmon in the world called Sockeye salmon with the bright red, oily flesh that we love to eat. The largest run of Sockeye salmon in the world is in the Fraser River in British Columbia, where I live. We like to have a run of 20 to 30 million Sockeye in a year. That’s a strong run, even though it’s well below what it used to be before Europeans came, but 20 to 30 million is a lot of fish.

In 2009, just over one million Sockeye came to the Fraser River. I remember, distinctly, looking at my wife and saying “it’s too late, there isn’t enough biomass to get those Sockeye up to the spawning grounds. They’ve had it.” A year later, 2010, we got the biggest run of Sockeye in a hundred years. Nobody knows what the Hell happened. Nature shocked us, and we still have a federal committee trying to find out what the Hell is going on with the Fraser River Sockeye. Nature showed us that, if we can pull back and give her a chance, she will surprise us in many ways.

I believe that that’s the challenge: to give Nature the chance, not impose human technology, and try to manage our way into the future. Give Nature — which has had 3.8 billion years to evolve — give Nature a chance, and my hope is that she will be far more generous than we deserve.

Retroviruses: Poorly Understood Agents of Change - Investigating the alarming rise of chronic inflammatory diseases By Judy A. Mikovits, PhD

Xenograft approaches commonly used since the 1950s in studies of human cancer, autoimmune, and neuroimmune disease promote the evolution of novel retroviruses with pathogenic properties. We now appreciate that it is the use of xenograft technologies in the development of vaccines and biological drugs and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that have accelerated the spread of animal retroviruses into humans, a process known as zoonosis, whereby an animal retrovirus jumps species, learning to evade immune mechanisms of humans and thereby causing disease.

From “Mothers Across the World”

Council is asked to go all out to take glyphosate based herbicides off all streets and parks.

In a presentation to Auckland’s Environment and Community Committee this week, the authors of the widely supported scientific report ‘Public Health Concern: Why did the EPA Ignore the World Authority on Cancer?’ asked the Council to reconsider its current approach of relying on EPA advice on glyphosate to protect public health.

Steffan Browning MP and principal author Jodie Bruning told the committee that EPA’s advice to Council that they should have “no worries – business as usual everybody – glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer” was not supported by the academic and scientific community as revealed in their recently published report.

The report criticizes the EPA’s actions in dismissing the findings of its own authority on cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), whose 17 international experts determined in 2015 that glyphosate and its formulations was a probable human carcinogen (and a known animal carcinogen). Instead they relied on a cancer review carried out by a single NZ toxicologist who concluded that glyphosate was unlikely to cause cancer.
“Even the Ministry of Health didn’t agree with the EPA approach” Steffan Browning told the Weed Management Advisory. “Which raises the issue of what authority New Zealand Territorial Local Authorities, including Auckland Council, should rely on to ensure the safety of their communities from known toxins”.

“Clearly the IARC has the expertise, and with the absence of monitoring of levels of human exposure to glyphosate based herbicides in New Zealand, Councils must take the precautionary lead of progressive European countries, California and Christchurch City, and remove herbicides like Roundup from areas open to the public.”

Jodie Bruning agreed and said, simply, it is the duty of Auckland Council to protect public health, and removing public exposure to glyphosate is an essential action to protect public health.

Conscious consumers won’t have to wait much longer for clear guidance on how to buy food and other products that are not only certified organic, but also certified regenerative.

The Rodale Institute on Wednesday, September 13, unveiled draft standards for a new Regenerative Organic Certification, developed by Rodale and a coalition of farmers, ranchers, nonprofits, scientists, and brands.

When finalized, the certification will go “beyond organic” by establishing higher standards for soil health and land management, animal welfare and farmer and worker fairness.
