Pellet stove is warming up. Low 30's tonight. Looking to go coal sometime around mid season.

believe the over night low was near zero last night

have you gone to coal yet?

have you considered a 'cold climate' heat pump or geothermal?

geothermal requires trenching for the buried lines

more of an upfront cost but the system will pay for itself over time compared to coal

I do have two pellet stoves, one in basement is only used on those cold days. I wish I had went with coal, bigger bang for the buck. I do not have enough room in the yard for the "Geo" digging.

depending on the square footage of the home and how well it is insulated you may only need less than 1/4 acre for a horizontial geo field

if you go with a vertical well then you would only need about a 2 foot by 2 foot area

make sure the home is well insulated

usually if a home has large icicles in the winter it may indicate that the attic is under insulated

would be wise to add 4-8" more of insulation to the attic if possible

you may want to look into insulating the walls to help save on the heat bill and to make the home more comfortable both in the winter and in the summer

if you are not able to do the entire house then insulate the areas that would offer the best benefit

would save money in the long run to have the walls insulated if they are not

and the home would be more comfortable

youtube may have videos showing tripolymer insulation
it may fit your needs

for those with a forced air furnace it may be a good idea to change the filter if you have not yet

temps to get near zero

the tv show 'ask this old house' shows install of a cold weather heat pump

the units have become much more efficient and can heat a home even if the outside temperature approachs zero degrees

reduce your heat by by nearly 50% or more

no digging required

main unit is like a whole house air conditioner outside condensor unit

the unit can serve two purposes

heat in the winter

and provide a/c in the summer

the heating expert for 'ask this old house' said that a heat pump 'transfers' heat from outside to inside in the winter and in the summer it transfers heat from inside of the home to the outside

he said that the newer units are super efficient and that you can get heat out of a block of ice

he said it is much cheaper to 'tranfser' heat then it is to produce heat

for every $1 you put into a heat pump to 'transfer' heat you get $3 out

normal heating systems if you put $1 in to get heat you get less than a $1 out in heat

some systems use solar panels to provide the electric to run the heat pump meaning you are heating/cooling your home for free

natural gas is trading at a 17 year low

anyone using natural gas for their home and is on budget
billing thru their utility company may want to have their budget lowered

when buying an electric type heater remember that you want to look at the btu output

a $15 small portable heater that plugs into a 110 volt outlet will heat a room the same as a $500 electric fireplace that plugs into the same 110 volt outlet
