Police bring down man accused of selling hallucinogenic mushrooms at GrassRoots

Trumansburg, N.Y. — A 21-year-old man has been accused of selling hallucinogenic mushrooms to festival-goers at GrassRoots 2014, according to Trumansburg Police.

Zachary Bergen, 21, was chased down by GrassRoots security officials and arrested Friday around 10:42 p.m.

Bergen is from Williamson, N.Y. Police said he was brought down as he tried going through the main gate of the festival. He was then arrested.

Bergen has been charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. The charges may “very well be upgraded to a felony once the lab reports are complete,” Trumansburg police said in a statement.

Bergen paid $200 in bail.

Police report plummeting of DWIs at GrassRoots

Trumansburg, N.Y. — As recently as five to 10 years ago, Trumansburg police were seeing somewhere between six to eight drunken driving incidents during every GrassRoots weekend.

The number started to fall. Then, last year, only one person was accused of DWI in connection with the festival.

This year, Trumansburg police again only arrested one person for DWI over the four-day festival — and he was trying to park his car.

The decline in DWIs is part of a nationwide trend.
