Severe storms rip northern Schuyler County

Severe thunderstorms and possibly a tornado ripped through northern Schuyler County late this afternoon, causing extensive damage but no reported injuries.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area and there were eyewitness reports of a twister, but those reports have not been confirmed, according to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.

Most of the storm’s impact was in the Town of Reading, near the Yates County line, the sheriff’s office said.

There were numerous downed trees and property damage reported but no injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

The worst of the weather passed about 15 miles north of Watkins Glen Racetrack, where hundreds of people were taking part in the Finger Lakes Wine Festival today.
