DA's office asks Cayuga County Legislature not to cut positions

The tentative $149,879,188 budget presented by County Administrator Suzanne Sinclair in November proposed cutting the part-time ADA's $27,000 position. Legislator Mark Farrell motioned to eliminate the office's public assistance fraud investigator.

Brian Bauersfeld, a full-time ADA who prosecutes the theft of public assistance, shared his "huge concerns" about the potential cuts with the Judicial & Public Safety Committee.

Without the part-time ADA around to help lighten caseloads and the investigator to conduct extensive interviews, Bauersfeld said the DA's office would no longer be able to prosecute large numbers of defendants accused of welfare fraud.
