ITHACA — The front entrance of Wegmans was closed Wednesday evening after an apparent explosion was reported in a beverage container return machine in the store’s front lobby around 6 p.m.
The Tompkins County Dispatch put out a call for emergency personnel after receiving a report of an explosion in the store’s front lobby caused minor injuries. A chemical smell was also reported and hazardous waste responders were sent to the store located off of Meadow Street in Ithaca.
Emergency dispatches reported minor injuries sustained in the explosion with one person possibly sustaining chemical burns on the face. None of the injuries could be confirmed. Wegman’s management had no comment during the time of the incident.
The store remained open for business as emergency crews worked at the store. Customers were routed to the store’s cafe entrance and exit. The parking lot lobby area was barricaded by fire trucks and caution tape. The main entrances were blocked by shopping carts.
Bangs Ambulance, the Ithaca Fire Department and Ithaca Police were visible on scene.
