Newfield Man Arrested Following Standoff with Ithaca SWAT Team

ITHACA — A 33-year-old Newfield man is under arrest after forcing his way into an ex-girlfriend’s apartment on the city’s south side. The Monday afternoon incident prompted the Ithaca Police Department’s SWAT team after the girlfriend told police her three children were inside the apartment near West Village.

Ricky R. Stewart Jr. faces several felony charges of first-degree criminal contempt and second-degree burglary, as well as three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and second-degree harassment. He is awaiting arraignment in Ithaca City Court.

According to Ithaca Police, the unnamed girlfriend said Stewart Jr., a former boyfriend, forced his way into her apartment and after harassing her, shoved the victim outside, locking himself and her three children in the Abbott Lane apartment.

The Ithaca Police Department’s SWAT team cleared the apartment, not finding the suspect inside. Stewart Jr. was eventually found in a neighbor’s apartment. That neighbor faces charges for first telling police investigators that she was unaware of the suspect’s whereabouts.
