Former director of Tioga Club accused of stealing more than $10,800

VILLAGE OF OWEGO — The former executive director of the Tioga County Boys & Girls Club has been accused of stealing more than $10,800 from the club.

Valerie M. Demkovich, 43, of Endicott, faces a felony grand larceny charge after being accused of misusing the youth club’s credit card to wrack up $10,828 in personal purchases, according to a Tioga County Sheriff’s Office release.

Demkovich, who lives at 422 Payne Road, was arrested Tuesday, arraigned in Owego Village Court and released on her own recognizance. Her next court date is Feb. 12 at 9 a.m.

Luke Henson, the current executive director of the club, at 201 Erie St. in Owego, said Wednesday that Demkovich was fired in November by the club’s board of directors after a monthly financial review discovered “unexplained variances.”

“We turned the evidence over to the auditors and the appropriate law enforcement authorities,” Henson said.

Calls seeking further details about the arrest were not returned by the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office.

Henson noted the youth club’s board has made changes to improve financial oversight since November, referring questions about the changes to several board members, who could not be reached Wednesday.

The club is still working on its 2013 budget, Henson said, declining to provide details. He doesn’t anticipate any changes to programs, saying he’s “fairly confident” all activities and services would be available this year.
