Retail Boom in Montour Falls

MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. -- One Schuyler County community is wrapping up 2012 with several new businesses.

Montour Falls celebrated its fifth grand opening of the year Friday night.

The latest, JBK Bridal & Prom, opened on the second-to-last business day of 2012.

“I think we really ended up with a nice selection of new businesses, including the lakeside veterinary, the bakery, the drugstore, cupcake shop, NYSEG moved their offices here,” says Mayor John King.

Now the town has a specialty dress store for weddings and proms.

“It's really exciting and the people here have been very welcoming,” says owner Janine Benjamin-Kuehl.

Benjamin-Kuehl calls her dress shop a “destination business.” As a result, she feels JBK Bridal & Prom brings something new to the table.

“It doesn't have to be on Main Street, or in Elmira, or in Rochester or Syracuse,” she says. “You can come here from Rochester and Syracuse and buy a dress, so it's going to bring new people into town.”

Mayor John King expects continued success in 2013.

Already, plans are in place for a visual renovation on Main Street.

“We have a major project called the ‘Gateway Project,’ which is an enhancement of the intersection at highway 14 and Main Street,” he says.

King says the Schuyler County Partnership for Economic Development (SCOPED) has been instrumental in launching all the new retail stores.

I'm not surprised. Look at the local tax rates, and you can see a big reason why a business might want to locate there, just as it's easy to see why people are fleeing some other areas.

Governments don't have quite the unlimited ability to tax their victims that they imagine they do; as long as people have a choice, some will make it.:

If you vote for government, you have no right to complain about what government does.
