Not to many Red ones around here that I have ever seen.

Does anyone need help trapping these critters or Greys for the purpose of relocating them to the country? "FREE"
I had to get rid of a nest in our attic this week. Scares the hell out of me that they may chew into the wiring and cause a unwanted fire. I have noticed over the years that Waterloo is being over taken by them. Some streets are loaded with them.
Slowly moving into Seneca Falls. Spotted a few here and there
just walking my dogs.
They are cute but can become problem if left un-checked when in a village enviroment.

We too live in an area we can't just "Choot 'em", and they are overrunning our yard. They have successfully killed one of the trees by constantly stripping the leaves out for nests. The local cats don't appear concerned about putting squirrel on the menu either.

I think you need to have a specail trapping permit even to live trap them in SF, but would love to know if there is someone to remove them and relocate them.

We have a bunch of them in our neighborhood in Waterloo. We have a corn feeder for them and we don't really mind if they eat the bird seed from our wild bird feeders. So far other than some digging in the flower beds to hide food they haven't damaged anything. My wife and I like to watch them chase each other around our yard.

I like watching them too and noticed, for the first time ever, a black squirrel. I toss them a couple of peanuts now and then. I did have some tear out the soffit (?) to build a nest under my back eave, and it needed to be replaced this year, but I still think they're cute to watch.

Black squirrels are the same species as Grey squirrels, just with more melanin in their fur. This species prefers deciduous woodland. This species is more common. Red squirrels are a different species of squirrel, which prefer conifer forests.

SQUIRREL STEW
From COOKS.COM

3 squirrels
2 cans tomatoes
2 lg. onions
Juice of 1 lemon
Dash of hot sauce
1/2 stick butter
2 to 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 c. catsup
1 can yellow corn
Salt & pepper to taste
Dress 3 young squirrels and let soak in salt water several hours. Remove and put in pot and simmer until tender. Pull meat from bones and strain liquid to avoid small bones. Add 2 cans tomatoes and 2 large onions. Cook slowly for 1 hour. Add to liquid juice of 1 lemon, dash of hot sauce, 1/2 stick butter, 2 to 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire, 1 cup catsup, salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for 30 minutes. Add 1 can yellow corn and simmer about 10 minutes, stirring to keep it from sticking. Makes about 1 gallon.

I can't believe you never had squirrel stew. My Mother used to cook it for us when we were lucky enough to shoot a mess of squirrels. The only drawback was that we got 'em with shotguns and every once in awhile, you'd get a few #6 shot in yer mouth.

As I got older (and better with firearms), I'd take 'em with a .22 and didn't have to worry about swallowing lead shot.

I live in the City of Syracuse.... they have to worry about 100+ Thugs a day discharging REAL firearms before they get to me. Also I do it "sniper like" from my sliding glass door in the back. I only shoot in my fenced yard and only near them to *spook* them. I am NOT a hunter and wouldn't want to hurt or kill them.

Squirrel meat IS dark, and, if you soak it overnight in salt water, it DOES taste like chicken.

Soaking in salt water or par boiling removes the flavor and they really do taste like chicken. But they are not worth cooking unless you have two or three. Trapping or shooting with a 22 is preferable to shotgun, as there always seems to be an elusive shot to munch down on after cooking if a shotgun is used.
