Tax rate down in Seneca Co. budget draft

WATERLOO Seneca County Manager Mitchell Rowe presented his first tentative county budget Tuesday, showing a slight tax decrease over 2012.

Spending is up $1.4 million, from $61.2 million to $62.6 million. But Rowe said he was able to use $4.7 million from the tax reserve fund and a projected increase of about $500,000 in sales tax revenue to keep the tax levy the same as this year, $9.4 million.

Uh. So spending went up $ 1.4 Million, but we're using $ 5.2 Million to make up the difference. Nice little Christmas bonus for the government hogs at the trough.

A slight decrease. There would be a huge decrease if the Natives paid us the millions of dollars they owe us. That is just simple math and commons sense.

The county settles with the Cayugas for an annual stipend?

Since the county manager is recommending a small decrease, I don't see him as a tax and spend guy. I think any further revenues he would use to further reduce taxes.

How do you settle with the Cayugas when they can't even decide who their leader is? Any settlement would be meaningless to the next group to take over. And you now have two separate groups of Native Americans in the area, the Cayugas Nation and the Oklahoma Seneca-Cayugas both selling tax free cigs.

You are one always complaining about the number of Native Americans threads on here! And now you start another one? It is obviously a topic that needs a lot of discussion as it affects us in many ways ;\)

Are Monroe County residents different than Seneca County residents on tax spending?

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/inte...-spending-taxes

Monroe County residents seem generally satisfied with how the government is spending their tax dollars, with respondents in a new poll saying they would maintain or increase spending in areas such as education, health care and infrastructure.

The area where the most respondents said they would increase spending was K-12 education, a sentiment that follows years of budget woes in many area school districts. About 45 percent of those surveyed said they would favor an increase in education spending.

The county doesn't pay for k-12 education. Even if Seneca County residents are just like the wealthier citizens of Monroe County, increasing the county taxes wouldn't translate into increased funding for local schools.

But my point is that the people support and want even more spending in these areas. You always say the people want lower spending regardless of how much it hurts our society.
