Today's (10/7) Fingerlakes Times says that Benton residents in the Town of Geneva are going to see their water rates raised to $1.75 per 1000 gallons. I decided to pull out my recent Seneca Falls water bill to compare. My bill says that I used 3400 units. My water meter says that it measures in cubic feet. A quick Google search tells met that there are 7.48 gallons in 1 cubic foot. So, I would have used 25,432 gallons. At $1.75 per 1000 gallons my bill in Geneva would have been $44.50. But, my SENECA FALLS WATER BILL WAS ALMOST THREE TIMES THAT. ($127.70) PLUS I ALSO PAID $202.72 FOR SEWER. Is my math right? If so, why is Seneca Falls water so expensive?
Honestly. I don't know about LowerLifer's math, but I do know the cost of SF water is way beyond that in most communities. It's a serious matter that should be addressed publicly, but the SF board hasn't done that other than to allude that there might be a decrease in the proposed 2013 budget. The operative word is "proposed."
Thank you! This is helpful information. I am outside of the Village of Seneca Falls, so you are basically saying that my rate of $5.01 per 1000 gallons is less than half of Penn Yan's rate. Does anyone else have information about other local water rates or know a website where I might be able to find them? Also, why did Seneca Falls go up so drastically this year?
Thanks. I was hoping that there was a website that made this easy... I went to individual websites as you suggested and here is what I found: Seneca Falls - $5.01 per 1000 gallons Geneva - $1.75 "" Freeport - $1.90 Bethlehem - $2.43 Buffalo - $3.05 Syracuse - $3.84 Ithaca - $6.01
These were just the first sites that came up... SF seems to be at the high end. I think we need to keep investigating since information doesn't seem to be forthcoming from the local government.

If they need money so bad then why do they let boaters dock for free along the canal, use clean toilets, have free internet and take free showers and hire a harbor master to clean the toilets and to make sure they're all happy? Then they say thank you by partying all night and leaving a big mess for a town employee to clean up even though they don't. There is something defnately wrong with the thinking that goes into running this town!
I don't think the water and sewer bill has anything to do with the police dept. The police dept is part of the Town and County tax. According to Don Earle in the Fingerlakes Times on 10/2/12, there will be no increase in the Town Tax rate this year. That being said, the 2012 tax that we paid last January, was up over 20% due to the dissolution. So, it really doesn't make sense to me that the dissolution would have anything to do with the water tax going up. We already were all on the same Seneca Falls water, so nothing should have changed. It is disconcerting that there is no real information out there. It makes me wonder if there was some burying of the village sins into the water district budget or if there was diversion of funds in some other way. Did anyone see the story about the comptroller in Illinois that stole millions from her city? She did this for years before being caught.
I posted about this earlier, I spoke to a town employee the reasoning is the former village ran the equipment in to the ground, did not up the rates as needed, but used other monies to hide the fact a raise in rates was needed. We as Towners were Hosed.Th e village dumped a large pile of stink in our laps, now we have to pay, lucky us!

I joke around a lot on the forum but this is serious stuff. It's too expensive to live anymore! There should be criminal charges made for mismanagement of public funds! Shouldn't the water and sewer infrastructure be self sustaining???!!! Where did the money go that should have gone toward regular maintenance upgrades through the years?

do you have low flow show heads? or 1.2 gallon per flush toilets? take a water meter reading then turn off all water fixtures for over an hour take another water meter reading to see if you have small leak
