Tompkins crime down in 2014, aligns with national trend

ITHACA, N.Y. — Fewer crimes overall were committed in Tompkins County in 2014 than in 2013, according to a report from the state, though the number of rape and robbery cases increased.

According to the 2014 New York State Crime Report, Tompkins County has seen a 10.3 percent drop in reported crime from 2013 to 2014.

The Division of Criminal Justice Services used seven crime categories as indicators of statewide crime trends: “violent crimes” which includes murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault; and “property crimes” of burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

But rapes and robberies were up in the county, by 15 percent (from 13 to 15) and 17 percent (from 29 to 34), respectively.

Police seeking armed robbery suspect in Ithaca

The Ithaca Police Department is asking for the public to help provide any information that could lead to the arrest of an armed robbery suspect from an incident Saturday night.

On March 19th at approximately 8:45 pm, the Ithaca Police were called to respond to the Subway restaurant located at 401 Elmira Road for the report of an armed robbery. Officers arrived and spoke with the store employee, who reported that he had just been robbed at gunpoint.

The clerk reported that he was preparing the store for close when a lone perpetrator entered wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black ski mask. The clerk reports that he was forced back to the register and then forced to open the register as the suspect brandished a handgun.

The suspect removed an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register before fleeing the store on foot, reportedly towards Spencer Street.

The restaurant employee described the perpetrator as a black male of average build with a dark complexion. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark sweatpants, and a black ski mask at the time of the robbery.
