I was in Auburn recently and found that there is a feral cat population on/next to Oak Creek Town Homes. I talked to some of the tenants there and they said there were "tons of cats." Some of them put food out for them, but management is discouraging tenants from doing so. There is a playing field and another apartment house next to Oak Creek and a wooded area between the two apartment complexes and behind the complexes.

I called the spca and they are over loaded with kittens at this time but, said that they could provide food and an igloo shelter for them. I was going to go there weekly with food but, my vehicle doesn't want to cooperate. Is there anyone out there who wants to help with this population of cats? I know it's a long shot, but I had to ask.

I'd be happy to help...with trapping and euthanization.

Trapping and neutering will cure the problem also, and is more humane. Of course, then you wouldn't be bringing me that tasty leftover roast cat... \:\)

Feeding them, without neutering, just allows them to be stronger and healthier, and thus breed faster and and survive better, and become a bigger problem.

The thing is that I'm a birder, so I have very little sympathy for feral cats. I hate the thought of any creature suffering though, which is why I'm in favor of live trapping and then euthanizing rather than decimating wild birds, spreading disease(s), starving, posing a threat to domestic animals...

Well, my thing is that I am a cat person and I have no sympathy for birds, but thanks for the great idea.

Four cats currently own me--it's not about loving cats. It's about considering all species--the balance.

So am I...duck, pheasant, geese, turkey, chicken, guinea fowl, 4 and 20 blackbirds, baked into a pie; it's all good. \:\)

Whether you are a cat or a bird person, there is an interesting article in this months "Conservationist", pg. 31.
I do know that if I was half a good predator as my cat, I wouldn`t be shopping at Wegmans for my fur or feathers nearly as much as I do.

Agreed. I've never tried blackbird, but anything that has an open season...I can find a recipe!

wooden nickel, that's one of the reasons that I made the painful decision to make all of my cats strictly indoor kitties. When my little female was an indoor/outdoor cat I once had to take three things away from her within fifteen minutes! It wasn't that she was hungry--it was purely sport for her. I couldn't have bird feeders out at all. That, combined with all of the dangers to her and the fact that she'd go missing for several days at a time only to turn up safe and sound just when I'd given up hope of ever seeing her again...now she just kills squeaky toys!

Spay and neuter. That is the answer to the feral cat population control. And if more people were responsible pet owners, they would neuter their animals and not let them outside. cats will adapt and be safer as indoor cats. Diseases such as Feline Leukemia virus and others will be controlled if fewer cats are allowed to repopulate.

LOL re. the squeaky toys.. I know many don`t agree with allowing cats out-I just can`t force her to stay inside when she so wants to go out. She adopted me a number of years ago on a cold February nite=I suspect she was a drop off, but had lived outside for some time. She is older now, goes out once or twice a day in nice weather, always in at night. PS-Doc Orzek makes sure she is up to date on all shots, the flea treatment is for the rest of the family`s benifit!

I have an abandoned house near me with a feral cat population. The woman who lived there and had been feeding them has been removed and the cats remain. Neuter/spay and returning does nothing for all the neighbors who have put up with them urinating and deficaing in their yards and on their houses. I have 2 cats of my own who are house cats and are not a nuisance, so why do we have to put up with other peoples? I say trap and euthanize is the humane thing to do.

I agree SOMETHING has to be done, but sadly once again its not JUST feral cats. It is also people with cats that do not spay and neuter them, they have several kittens and they too are left untreated and let the population explosion begin. I am sick of them spraying on just about everything and climbing all over my vehicles also. Dogs are required to be kept on lead, licensed and vaccinated, something needs to be done about cats, feral and domesticated. Not to mention the diseases they could carry.

I love cats, I have 3. I also love birds. All 3 of mine have been adopted from being wild outdoor cats. They are now totally indoors, spayed and neutered. But I have neighbors who have 3 cats that are seldome inside. Instead they come to my porch, perch on my porch railings and snag my screens while talking to my inside cats. They then go out in the yard and catch the birds that I feed. That does not make me happy. The neighbors obviously, also do not believe in spaying or neutering their cats either.
