"Bath Salt" Drug Bust: $45,000 in Drugs Seized 5/5/2012 5:47:14 AM
News Release From Ithaca Police:
The Ithaca Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit in cooperation with the Tompkins county District Attorney’s Office, recently conducted an investigation into distribution of synthetic drugs commonly referred to as “bath salts”.
Bath Salts are in a family of synthetic drugs or designer drugs, which have presented a special challenge to law enforcement. The chemical compounds used to produce the desired effect or high, may or may not be listed as a controlled substance under federal law. The New York State Health Department has prohibited the sale of synthetic Drugs in New York State, and other legislation has made three of the most commonly used chemical compounds used in synthetic drugs a controlled substance. After being briefed on the status of this investigation Savante Myrick, the Mayor of the City of Ithaca provided the following quote. “These new and dangerous drugs are a serious problem in our community. They are sending people to our local hospital every day and the City of Ithaca considers them a legitimate threat to the safety and well-being of our citizens. We are taking all necessary enforcement actions to take these and other dangerous drugs off our streets.”
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration has noted an increase in the use of synthetic drugs and the adverse effects these drugs have on persons who use them. These effects include, but are not limited to personal injuries, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, elevated blood pressure, seizures, hallucinations, paranoid behavior and serious medical issues such as the loss of organ functions, coma and death. Local medical officials report people frequently being treated at the Cayuga Medical Center for serious health issues caused by the use of these synthetic drugs. Area police agencies are also dealing with an increased number of people “high” on synthetic drugs who are disoriented, combative, and very violent.
On May 4th, 2012 a Search Warrant was served at 3D light 109 East State St.on the Ithaca Commons. The warrant was served for the purpose of seizing various types of designer drugs that were being distributed from this location.
As part of this investigation, undercover police officers purchased a variety of substances which did test positive for containing controlled substances under New York State law.
Seized from 3D Light was a total of 1744 packages of synthetic drugs of various brand names and manufactures. The estimated street value of these products is $45,500.00.
Chief of Police Edward Vallely has commended the efforts of the investigators involved in this investigation. The chief would like to caution the public about the detrimental effects of these substances, and would strongly recommend that parents learn about these synthetic drugs. These drugs along with synthetic marihuana and other designer drugs are becoming more common amongst teens and school age children. The substances seized as part of this investigation are being sent to the New York State Police Laboratory for further testing and analysis. The Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office will be consulted for the appropriate criminal charges to be filed in the near future.
