Aces, the night Arty was lost there was a pitbull outside in the yard next door. When I got there, the owner of the dog told me that his son was out with the dog a little while ago and it was chasing something. This guy was very nice and helpful. Then he went in the house to ask his son about what the dog was chasing. He didn't come back out. I knocked at this guys door for days and left umteen messages and he would not answer me. Fortunately, Arty was sighted a week later, so we knew he was alive.
I was looking at Arty's back legs today and one gash looks like a big dog's tooth went right through his foot. I'm sure glad he had those claws, otherwise that dog would have killed him.
A couple summers ago, my Skippy was sunning himself in his chair in the back yard. Along came the neighbor's dog (kids forgot to put his electric collar on), who was determined to get Skippy, even ripping up our screen house to get to him. I was able to get Skippy in the house, the dog kept jumping up on me to try to get to Skippy, forcing his way in my kitchen. There were some workmen next door that saw what happened. They said "your cat was ripping that dog a new ass." Glad Skippy has his claws.
Hoping you reconsider.

I'm sure glad he had those claws, otherwise that dog would have killed him.
One of the reasons I think that my then 10 yr old cat was so relaxed when I brought home a 3 yr old, 100 lb intact male dog was because he had claws. Can a cat beat that dog? No, but I think the claws gave him the confidence that he could cause the dog pain, and the dog knew it, so the 1st day went easily, with no acrimony, only curious wariness.
Having that modicum of confidence, the cat didn't run every time he saw the dog, so the dog's chase instinct wasn't activated.
I should add that the cat was a 2 yr old "for free" cat when I got it, and when I went to pick it up, the owner had to fish the cat out from behind the toilet, where it was hiding from the family German shepherd. Some dogs will always view a cat as prey, and some won't. So, the cat wasn't exactly clueless about or unfamiliar with big dogs.
They're friends, and respect each other, and lick faces and sleep together. Well, the cat will eat and drink at the dog's dishes, which is disrespectful to some dog's territorial instinct, and has gotten some cats killed, but the dog doesn't mind, and will Hoover up the cat's food and drink, given opportunity. So, they're respectful and disrespectful friends.
Sort of like a good marriage, maybe.

I did not know that you got Arty back. So happy for you. I know you went nuts trying to find him.
I decided not to get the girls declawed. I am making them a scratching post. Actually a couple. They are only 6 weeks and 2 days old. A nice young lady gave them to me. Thanks again Vanessa if you are reading this. I believe first shots for cats are at 8 weeks old so will be setting that up.

Thanks ya'll. Good tips. As said, I have cut claws down many times with finger nail clippers and cat clippers so that's all good. They both have their first vet appt. on May 8th.

Silverfox, I think you know this, because I believe I have read on here before that you have had many cats, but some cats are vertical scratchers and some are horizontal. I have cat trees, Cat Alpine cardboard scratchers, and and sisal scratchers and I have never once had a cat scratch any furniture. Climbed curtains, yes, but I can replace curtains a lot cheaper. BTW, I was taught years ago by a vet that it is not considered a "declaw", it is considered an amputation.
