Aces, the night Arty was lost there was a pitbull outside in the yard next door. When I got there, the owner of the dog told me that his son was out with the dog a little while ago and it was chasing something. This guy was very nice and helpful. Then he went in the house to ask his son about what the dog was chasing. He didn't come back out. I knocked at this guys door for days and left umteen messages and he would not answer me. Fortunately, Arty was sighted a week later, so we knew he was alive.

I was looking at Arty's back legs today and one gash looks like a big dog's tooth went right through his foot. I'm sure glad he had those claws, otherwise that dog would have killed him.

A couple summers ago, my Skippy was sunning himself in his chair in the back yard. Along came the neighbor's dog (kids forgot to put his electric collar on), who was determined to get Skippy, even ripping up our screen house to get to him. I was able to get Skippy in the house, the dog kept jumping up on me to try to get to Skippy, forcing his way in my kitchen. There were some workmen next door that saw what happened. They said "your cat was ripping that dog a new ass." Glad Skippy has his claws.

Hoping you reconsider.

One of the reasons I think that my then 10 yr old cat was so relaxed when I brought home a 3 yr old, 100 lb intact male dog was because he had claws. Can a cat beat that dog? No, but I think the claws gave him the confidence that he could cause the dog pain, and the dog knew it, so the 1st day went easily, with no acrimony, only curious wariness.

Having that modicum of confidence, the cat didn't run every time he saw the dog, so the dog's chase instinct wasn't activated.

I should add that the cat was a 2 yr old "for free" cat when I got it, and when I went to pick it up, the owner had to fish the cat out from behind the toilet, where it was hiding from the family German shepherd. Some dogs will always view a cat as prey, and some won't. So, the cat wasn't exactly clueless about or unfamiliar with big dogs.

They're friends, and respect each other, and lick faces and sleep together. Well, the cat will eat and drink at the dog's dishes, which is disrespectful to some dog's territorial instinct, and has gotten some cats killed, but the dog doesn't mind, and will Hoover up the cat's food and drink, given opportunity. So, they're respectful and disrespectful friends.

Sort of like a good marriage, maybe.

I did not know that you got Arty back. So happy for you. I know you went nuts trying to find him.

I decided not to get the girls declawed. I am making them a scratching post. Actually a couple. They are only 6 weeks and 2 days old. A nice young lady gave them to me. Thanks again Vanessa if you are reading this. I believe first shots for cats are at 8 weeks old so will be setting that up.

Good choice! \:\) Many times when a cat doesn't have front claws they take to biting as a defense and you don't want that. If they do start clawing at your furniture, you can buy spray products that will deter them but good old double sided tape on the spot works really well. They just hate it. Also, rubbing catnip on your new scratching posts will encourage them to scratch there.

Also, keep your cat's nails trimmed.

Keep your cat's claws trimmed. Since part of the reason for scratching is to sharpen and even shorten claw growth, you can help out with a regular, careful trim of your cat's claws. If you don't know how to clip a cat's claws, ask your vet to show you how to do this the first time, as it is easy to hurt the cat badly if you don't what you're doing.[19] [20]A cat that is not used to claw clipping can be a little bothered by it initially but persevere until he is comfortable with it. Again, praise him while trimming his claws so that he knows you are caring for him.
It is useful to "blunt" the tips of the claws of an indoor cat that never has access to outdoor trees. You can do this with toenail clippers (never use claw clippers made for dogs) but you must know the correct cutting line to avoid injuring the cat. Ask your vet to show you this for the first time.[21]

Thanks ya'll. Good tips. As said, I have cut claws down many times with finger nail clippers and cat clippers so that's all good. They both have their first vet appt. on May 8th.

Don`t forget the bath it helps to soften the nails before clipping.
Use your kitchen sink, draw a real nice luke warm 3/4 full
hold the thing gently wash then for the rinse hold cat real tight but do not hurt it. Say about 10 minutes under the water
and I`ll bet he won`t scratch again. Then go to back yard and find a spot under a tree and bury it. Mort will make the cross later.JMHO

Aces, my cat will not use a scratching post. I have tried many times with catnip rubbed on it. However, she loves the corrigated card board one that lays on the floor. Sprinkle that with cat nip and she uses it instead of the furniture. I think the reason she likes it is because she can stand on top of it and rip into it securely. After a good scratching session she will lay on it for a nap. I got the wider size so she can stand on it at Wal-Mart.

I have the round about thing with the ball in it and in the middle, it has the corrugated card board and came with catnip. My other cats from years ago preferred the corrugated card board too.

I bought a couple of 1970's metal office chairs covered in burlap from the salvation army to recover. Turns out the cats loved to climb and scratch on it.

Rosebud and her hubby found Arty on Bridge Street. He came home on April 15th. I saw him again yesterday. He just wants to sleep. Won't play like he used to; he's afraid when you try to wiggle a string in front of him. In addition to that gash, he also has a couple places near his feet where there is no skin. Hopefully after he catches up on his sleep and gains some weight he'll get back to his old self.

If you don't know how to clip a cat's claws, then learn how before trying it. Otherwise you might hurt him him. This is pretty clear and detailed. It's convinced me to stop using nail clippers:

Yes, we've used nail files at the vet before rather than nail clippers.

Silverfox, I think you know this, because I believe I have read on here before that you have had many cats, but some cats are vertical scratchers and some are horizontal. I have cat trees, Cat Alpine cardboard scratchers, and and sisal scratchers and I have never once had a cat scratch any furniture. Climbed curtains, yes, but I can replace curtains a lot cheaper.
BTW, I was taught years ago by a vet that it is not considered a "declaw", it is considered an amputation.
