We currently have verizon wireless. Our contract was up a long time ago but we never upgraded the phones and got a new contract because we didn't want to pay data charges. (We have 5 phones!) We are now way overdue for phones. I know that there seems to be move availability of service providers in larger metropolitan areas. We have stuck with Verizon this long just for the coverage. We spend most of our time in areas between Ithaca-Geneva-Elmira (imagine the triangle....) Are there other cell companies that have good service coverage in this area? Has anyone tried Republic Wireless. I would like to upgrade to a smartphone but fear having to give away my eye teeth to do it. Thanks for any pointers.

Just make some calls and shop around. The business is so competitive now someone will give you a good deal. I have T-Mobile now and love it.

Thanks guys. I'm in the southern end of the county, so spend lots of time in the Interlaken/Ovid/Trumansburg areas. I'm leary of finding a killer "deal" just to find out that I have no service. I did that once long ago when Virgen Mobile 1st came to the area. Bought one at Best Buy, but then couldn't even get service at my own house.

The general rule:
AT&T tends to do well in urban centers, with decent coverage and good speed for data.
Verizon takes a bit of a speed hit for data, and especially in urban centers, but has better coverage in more sparsely populated areas.

Yeah, Virgin Mobile concentrates coverage on areas with high population density, which tends to correspond to a younger demographic, which should explain their marketing.
