Have you tired to turn it back on after it has cooled down and if so did it work? The problem with laptops is that is the cooling port is covered underneath they will get warm and shut off. If it does not come back on after it has cooled down then you may have fried either your hard drive or some other parts inside. I have a cooling rest that mine sits on, plugs into the usb port and the fans run while I am using my laptop and never have had that problem.

As Red said perhaps the cooling ports were blocked, also if the game you were playing has alot of 3D scrolling around like World of Warcraft this can happen due to the strain it puts on the video card.
A can of compressed air while it is OFF blown into the rear heat ports could blow any of the dust bunnies out of the fans.
There are also aftermarket cooling pads for those that use their laptops as desktop replacements.

Check to see if the charger was actually charging. We have a laptop that suddenly went out in the middle of a game. Turns out that even though the charger was plugged in, it wasn't actually charging. After unplugging and plugging it back in, it started charging and everything was okay. What was odd is there was no low battery warning given at all. It just stopped dead.

Hi there,
Two things I can think of. There was a recent update to Java, that was really strange the other day. I didn't get it on my laptop but my companion did. I was playing Supreme Commander as some R&R time and my companion was on facebook playing gardens of time.
After about an hour, she yelled at me and said the computer keyboard felt hotter then normal and the fan had kicked on high where she could hear it turn up and slow down every minute or two.
The computer did this still after 3 reboots. Has gotten hot enough to ruin the keyboard (new one on the way) and now there was another update. The laptop has gone back to normal.
Yep I did the same thing most everyone has suggested. But didn't find anything.
So I looked into possible explanations and the only thing I found was that there has been several Java updates in the past that change a module or that patch something and the computer all of a sudden start running harder or hotter. Then the next patch ... walla .... all fixed. If that is the case I would love to know if that seems to be what has happened here.
Of course the typical culprits remain. Fan, Power supply (doubtful but a possibility), memory, motherboard, processor. Sounds like hardware at first any way. One thing to remember is if you are using wifi to connect to your internet and the signal goes week, the wifi card in the computer could potentially work hard trying to boost the signal causing a heat problem you described to. If it continues it would be interesting to know when where and what is happening. So maybe it can be explained a little bit better.
You could always check a few other things. Like if you computer has built in diagnostics ... you could run a stress test and general check out to see if any hardware comes back faulty. If something does you will at least have an answer to the burning question whether or not its hardware or software.
Best wishes and good luck,

this will blow dust inside of your computer, the proper way is to take out the fan.

take out the fan, regrease processor and north bridge under the cooling channel and blow out cooling fins/ fan. adjust your windows startup and remove any unecessary programs or browser help objects!
