As the economy continues to decline and costs rise,Beverly's struggles with the ever increasing costs associated with careing for the cats and dogs at the shelter. At the present time supporters of the shelter are trying to find ways to raise money to offset the costs of feeding so many animals. Some ideas include; accepting donated junk cars at Trouts Recycling, scrap metals, cans and bottles( which they have done for years ).Providing drop off dumpsters for scrap metal, electronics and tires. If things work out a pick up service may also become available. With gas at $4 a gallon this will be hard, but it may be DO-ABLE.
Keep in mind that the shelter sells pet supplies Watch THE HOMETOWN REVIEW for more details as this IDEA progresses.

They should loosen up their values and partner with Lollypop to bring a new site and new operation to Seneca County.
Beverly's model does not work anymore and is a "hope" that will never be achieved.

here are some ideas but it will need some buy in from folks who care about animals
first off places like restaurants that like the cause could have a popular menu item on a given day every week or even everyday lets say a pizza or a burger & fries or a good home cooked menu item. if you bought one on Friday night or a Tuesday breakfast off the Friends of Beverly list the item price would be charged an extra small percentage of the price and that amount would be donated to the shelter. the restaurants could also think about a matching amount grateful for the traffic the cause brings.
bars ....on a given night how about BUDweisers for my four legged buds at the shelter. same gig as the restaurants thing but a BUD for a bud.
the banks could get involved here is how...a Beverly BUYS CREDIT CARD or check card. Lets say you have an account at a bank. they create a BEVERLY CARD that is connected to you account you get the card. Associated with the card is a automatic percentage that gets deposited into a BEVERLY account at that bank. You decide the contribution level say 1% , 2% whatever you want. Now EVERY TIME you or I choose to use that specific card to buy ANYTHING AT LOCAL MERCHANTS ESPECIALLY we know a percentage of our purchase will be deposited into the beverly account at that bank.
All the big banks could have a big beverly sign out front and color it in (like the United way Goal thermometer, you know what i mean)good for beverly...good for the bank........lots of chest thumpin
Where the heck is the Chambers of Commerce in in all of this? Lots of business smarts there ..come on chamber members team up and make some bucks for Beverly...all those business heads and should have some ideas to make a few cents for a good cause.
Walmart...you can go to Walmart and buy tee shirts and hoodies that are area specific, you know Finger lakes, Mynderse Blue devils, Waterloo Indians, geneva etc you know area stuff. Why not approach Walmart ask them to establish a Beverly Shelter line of apparel and send the proceeds to the shelter. walmart makes tons of money off local people who also love cats & dogs one rack of tee shirts or hats or something with proceedes going to the shelter.
Speaking of tons of money what about the land fill...what if they donated TWENTY FIVE CENTS for every truck that rolls in there. they would never miss the $$ and the shelter would certainly get some real benefit judging on the traffic i see going in there. not even 25 cents a ton......25 cents a truck, just two bits a truck how easy could this be for them.
bottle returns, when you return your bottles to the recycle store if they had a Friends of Beverly big box there and i put my returnable in that box ...you guessed it the nickels go to Beverly
Lastly stop thinking local, it isn't just SF and Waterloo folks who care about beverly...get the word out to a larger area.
If the area cares about beverly the area will kick in if the area does not care then unfortunately the days may be growing shorter.

I used to donate to Beverly's all of the time, but every time someone has dumped off kittens on me(at least once a year for several years now), they refused to help. I had to bring all of the ones that were not eaten by coyotes to Lollypop. Now Lollypop gets my donations.

At times people get a little tired of giving over and over and like the lady with the kittens prefer someplace else. The IDEA is to provide a service and EARN the money reguardless of the personal issues. People who want to recycle don't always have a convenient place to drop off their recycleables so they get piled somewhere or go in the trash. Beverly's does not euthanize animals like other places do, to some people that means a lot. I was friends with the SCHULTZ family, going back to 1964, and went to school with Patty, that is all the reason I need. 48 years of serving me, better than anyone in Seneca County.
They do have a can and bottle drop box in the yard by the new dog park.

There are a lot of charities supported by taxes and if you donate locally you in fact reduce your property taxes.
Do you mean that donations will cause those entities that are presently given OP's money to not ask for money, or that if the money is not bestowed upon those that now benefit from those seizures, then government will give it back to those that earned it, instead of finding something else to spend it on?
While the BAS is a fine org, and while it is certainly deserving of voluntary donations, I think that to believe that people will usually and willingly give up a stream of free money, once gained, or that government will reduce expenditures, no matter how much the tax victims are already burdened, is both to be overly optimistic about human nature, in general, and to not understand the nature of government, in particular.
I was just recently able to escape SC, with it's brutal taxing regime, which was the major cause of my flight. I cleaned out $400 worth of recyclable metal, which I do NOT consider "trash", but, rather, "money".
I might donate some of that money to some group(s) in my new local. But, if I do, it won't be to save money, but to spend money on something I consider both good and worthwhile.
Your advocacy for the BAS is a selfless thing, and I'm sure they appreciate it, but I think it's caused you to convolute your thinking.
It's simple, really: DONATE to the BAS; they do good work, and help beings that can't help themselves!

What ,in fact, you are doing is directing money to something you feel is worthy. Tax deductions are a ploy of government,to reduce the responsibility that government has to take care of it's people, and place it on the willing.

/quote] Yeah, I guess that's sorta what I do when I spend money on something I think is worthy. LOL, what would I do without you? [/quote]
The folks at Beverly's are trying to make this SALE a combination SALE and SPRING CLEAN UP for the residents of Seneca County. There is an effort to provide dumpsters for Electronics and other recycleable items,so if the items don't sell they can be disposed of properly. So far there is a donated dumpster for things that will go to the landfill and there will be no charge by the landfill to dump there. A dumpster for scrap metal will also be available. Cans and bottles will be collected. There are professional recyclers helping to SQUEEZE every penny out of anything people wish to donate.

Well, I have said on this thread that the BAS is a great org, and that people should donate. I just think that saying, FI, donating will lower taxes, is a bit of a stretch, and over complicates it.
I think that the important thing is to just donate valuable scrap metal, valuable money, valuable time, etc., to the BAS simply because it's a good thing to do for a valuable and worthy outfit.
Someone on this thread said that the BAS model is outdated, and that it should be changed. If, as I think, the poster was referring to the "no-kill" policy, I vehemently disagree.
About 10 yrs ago, the BAS had a 3 yr old rott mix there, and it had been there for quite a while. Not a lot of demand for a 100 lb rott mutt, I guess.
Dorothy Comerford told me she'd dealt with the owner since the dog was a pup. He used to abuse it, including leaving him chained in the back yard in all weather. He finally moved, leaving him chained in the back yard. He was convicted of abandonment; I would have horsewhipped him.
He was named Damian. I guess that the owner was one of those fools who thought having a tough dog with an evil-sounding name would make him tough.
I took the stupid studded collar off, and named him Bob. He is at my feet now, and has been my constant joy and companion all these years. Without the "no kill" policy, I wouldn't have him.
I have also boarded 2 dogs and a 15 yr old cat there, for 5 weeks, while I was in Panama. They were fit and happy when I returned, and I think they had the best of care. I could tell that they'd remembered to give Bob his Thyroxin twice/day. I was most happy to have given them my business.
The cat turned 19 last Nov., BTW, and he's still doing well, as is Robert the Dog.

VM, also about 3 yrs ago my brother who lives out of state was coming for a visit and had been looking at dogs at BAS on their website before coming and saw a beautiful golden mix. When he got here he went to see it. Beautiful, beautiful dog. Who even at BAS they had been contempating putting him down. He had been abused and neglected for so long that he was extremely aggressive and they could do nothing. Finally one of their volunteers asked to work with him exclusively and he made the dog adoptable with restrictions of no children and someone who knew how to work with aggressive dogs. That dog is now a wonderful dog, gorgeous, playful. But he does need a stern hand. I have a hard time imagining BAS putting him down but at any other shelter, he definitely would have been.
