This is not a personal attack on the police department. It is a personal attack on the unfair way an unnecessary service was forced upon taxpayers without so much as a vote. I am sure you understand, officer.

I meant an attack by me, personally, on an agency, and not any of its included persons, as opposed to, say, a drone strike. I am guilty of misusing the word. I knew I was doing so, but got a little too cute, and imprecise, in trying to make a distinction.
But, a personal attack has, by definition, to be against a person. If it's against an agency, it's not a personal attack. An ad hominem attack is usually called a personal attack
I think this is useful:
Ad Hominem , "against the person"
Description: Reverse of the Appeal to Authority . The Ad Hominem argument rejects an idea based on who subscribes to or promotes it. It is also more commonly called a "personal attack"; instead of attacking the argument or position, the arguer is attacked. Note that all personal attacks are not fallacious. Sometimes the personal character of person does matter in an argument. For example, the fact that a politician is a known white collar criminal may just be relevant to a discussion of his re-election, even though that does not, in and of itself, invalidate the bill (his ideas) he has just introduced.
Example: "I hear that the Texas senate passed a bill allowing the building of a governor's chapel in Austin. Texans sure are dumb."
Ad Hominem-circumstantial
Description: Form of Ad Hominem . This is a case where the argument is rejected, not on the personality of an opponent but, on some circumstances which supposedly makes the arguer an unreliable source. While it is extremely important to understand the point of view of the person presenting an argument, where a person comes from, their social and economic situation and background, or even education level, these things do not directly effect the quality of the argument itself.
Example: "Hey, I hear our governor was once homeless. How could a homeless person know how to balance a budget, more less a multi-million dollar one?"

just why? Isn`t there a 2nd in command when the chief isn`t right on the spot? I hope so! [/quote]
Yes there is a 2nd in command when the Chief is not available.. I talked to a friend yesterday who told me that he was told by Sgt Snyder that he is 2nd in command when the Chief is not there. He said that is why he wears a white shirt and the rest of the sgts wear blue one. Sgt. Tim is capable as 2nd in charge.

I read in the paper the results are in for police chief. whoever the new chief is, I certainly hope he/she will be required to live in the Town that pays his/her salary. Enough of this small town nonsense. We pay the freight, the train should be parked in our Town and not another County. But, we will see if the Town Board has the guts to make a tough decision if Chief Stu is the chosen one.

Well, if you cannot say you are for the SFPD then you are against them.

Nice to see someone's policing, Town Resident. Now, if they'd just start cracking down on the speeding tractor trailers who don't belong on the street to begin with. I'm starting to believe with some others here that the SFPD has outlived its usefulness. Allowing unhindered speeding, oversize trucks, hot-rodding etc... diminishes the quality of life for all who live in the area.
