So many are in the villages, towns and county....Why does it take so long to either have someone tear it down, auction it off or burn it down? Why aren't the owners held more accountable for the property? Isn't a vacant lot better then an eyesore??

I think it has to do with zoning laws and what you can and cannot have on your property. I live in the village of Waterloo and I am always saddened by the condition of the homes on Main Street, most are rental properties and look like crap. I wish there was something the village could do to make the owners of these properties at least keep them looking decent. I know it's no picnic to be a landlord, but some of them look like they should be condemned.

I'm not talking about how people keep their yards that's a whole other barrel of monkeys...that topic has more to do with anything from hoarding to scrapping to contractors with materials and equipment showering the yard...I don't understand how nothing can be done with these houses that have caved in and no one has lived there for years...even if taxes were paid on property and the is uninhabitable..why these places can't be demolished and just have an empty lot...it's much more appealing then the eyesores of the long abandoned house...

I'm sure the code enforcement is aware of all the properties...I'm just saying what's stopping Seneca County to say that if the building is beyond repair why don't they let the fire department have some practice and burn it...whatever is left clean it and charge property owner...bank...who ever..an empty lot is much more appealing to perspective buyers if it's auction or bank owned and if owner has let property get that bad..then clean it up and charge them...if they have $$ to pay taxes they can pay for clean up just like charging land owners that don't mow and they get charged for town/county to mow it...

It's a shame that a lot of these dilapidated homes on are major thoroughfares, showing visitors what crappy homes Seneca County has. Most are overrun by vermin and lord only knows what else. I agree - why can't something be done about these dumps? Home values are low enough, without having one of these houses next door. Maybe I can have my assessment lowered if I live next to one! As homes are growing old and the economy keeps going down, we will be seeing more and more of these houses. So many are inhabitated by hoarders. I see a lot of homes with junk piled up on porches, porches falling down, abandoned cars in lawns, etc. And these are in the village. What can be done???

Recently the board of supervisors found that 3 buildings needed to be demolished. The last I knew 2 had been razed. I don't know about them but I was there for the discussion on the third. The taxes were paid up, the building was condemned, and they were taking it upon the taxpayers to demolish it. I believe the cost was $30,000. It was to be left an empty lot. So I suggest if you are serious about a property being demolished, take it to the county board. But it could be at your expense.

I can see where there are some houses and lots that are too close together that would make it hard to rebuild...but on the other hand, I still think it's more benificial to take down the condemned houses that are attracting vermin, have saftey issues and bringing property values down...The extra expense would be worth it in the long run even though bringing up the property taxes also means higher taxes...The benefit to that is the county wouldn't be able to cry that they are so financially deprived...it would also attract perspective buyers to the area...it's a catch 22 situation but I think it's been ignored and looked over for too long....

If the county had $30,000 to take it down, why couldn't that money be used to hire local builders to rebuild the property. Keep the money in the community, put food on some tables. Then sell the house to reclaim the investment, bring the neighborhood back to respectable. I'm sure this wouldn't work in all cases but I wanted to suggest it to the board for future properties. This time around was already in motion. Of course the home owner is out of luck either way.

Minni, are you kidding me? Rebuild these homes with $30,000? A decent bathroom and kitchen costs that. What about the rotting support beams, the windows, probably a new furnace and water heater, etc. It's cheaper to tear it down.

Of course it would depend on the structure itself, and every case would be different. Maybe it wouldn't be to completion but it would sellable. I just think there are opportunities out there that people are not considering. People buy delapidated houses, fix them and sell them all the time.

BINGO ! Frostbyte has hit the nail right on the head. If you look at the Seneca County Stats,most houses were built prior to 1939. Two story houses cramed in on 50 foot lots with no room for 2 or 3 cars to park,garages have to be built in back of houses. Village lots are JUST TOO Small. The worst houses should be taken down, the lots split down the middle and sold to the property owners on either side.( a fence should be mandatory, in California I have seen where developers build block walls on the property lines ) People need ROOM, that is why most village residents dream of moving to the country.
