I thought there was a discussion of this a while back but I can't find it.
I have an Acer Aspire One. It ran real well in the beginning, but it has been freezing up for quite some time and it's annoying. It's running vista. Mostly seems to happen when I walk away for a while, and when I come back, have to hard boot again. I have sleep/hibernate shut off, but it doesn't help. I have a screen saver supposedly turned on, but it never runs it. I've googled multiple times to find a cause/solution for this, but haven't found something that sounds like it would help. Anyone have this happen? How did you resolve it? TIA

Busy tonight but I can tell you it is a frequent problem with them. Some have found that updating the BIOS has helped. Will be back tomorrow.

Do you know the exact model number? AOD257 1497, AOD257 13404 ? It should say on a label located on the bottom.

Another issue is when they go unpatched they hang up, like what you got going on now. Check Windows update and see if you have all the recent updates (critical and optional), then we can go from there.

Acer would reccomend that you save all your personal data to a thumbdrive and reinstall in this case(found quite a few articles on it)

Sticker says: A0761h - 1346

Windows updates are updated. The only other abnormality I have noticed lately is that it says it needs a Java update. But when I run it I eventually get an error msg and says it was not successful.

I looked into the updating of the Bios and everything I saw said that I download and install the wrong one, then my computer will be useless. I've been to the Acer website, but I see a list of them for my machine and have no idea which one would be the right one. Uggh. :-(

Don't, you need to back your stuff up and do a total system restore.

Are you interested in finding out how?

Ok, so I've:
-> run all the windows updates (there one only 1 thing)
-> I've used the WD SmartWare for a back up (not sure if that just does docs & pics, or programs too... and the last time I needed it I never could figure out how to get the dang stuff back off it, oh well).
->i'm running the free version of avira, did all updates and scans....

What does a total system restore do? Factory settings?

I HATE backup software, not only is it clunky but chances are it backs up the problem as well. Have you ever copied and pasted files to that drive on your own? Once you can accomplish this you can easily move them around from system to system.

Yes a total restore will set it to day 1 factory settings as if it came out of the box.

You could however its not going to give you the results you are looking for.

Gonna go out on a limb here and have you head over here and download Ccleaner. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard You want to Save File. Then Run after it saves.

During your install take the 2 checks out of the middle boxes for intigration after clicking next dont install googles toolbar. After it completes keep the check in the box for Run ccleaner, It will ask if you want it to remember the certain select cookies and then click Yes, after it finishes Just click Run cleaner then after that is complete on the left tab click on Registry and scan for issues.

You have a much larger problem than a web browser, usualy when the problem you have occures its related to malware and spyware. Folks that change browsers to get away from the problems that IE was giving them 9 times out of 10 import the browser junk from IE and get the same if not worse problems. Chrome is run in a sandboxed enviroment so this does not normally happen, however the problem is still there its just masked.

I already had CCleaner on the machine. I hadn't run it in a while. A registry scan turned up multiple entries:
1 - unused file extention
1 - open with application issue (a skype plugin)
6 - ActiveX/COM issues
17 - Missing TypeLib Reference - most seem to be related to ISkype, IChatMember, IpodManagerUI, ISkypeCall, ISkypeSms, IUserHelper,ISkypeVoicemall,IFileTransfer, IFileTransferCollection etc

I don't even know what all that is. I do have Skype on here, but rarely use it because it freezes. Is this malware?? Do I hit Fix Selected Issues?
Thanks.

You should update it, (there is a link within the program as well as the link I have already posted) and Yes hit fix selected issues, it will ask to back up the registry click no and let it do its thing. Run it weekly if you are a heavy user.

Did you run the regular cleaner along with the registry cleaner?

After this is done we will address spyware/malware and antivirus.

Which antivirus are you running and is it up to date?

I am hopeing you are not running AVG or Norton as both are complete garbage on a netbook.

Ok, i've fixed all issues.
I also did the regular cleaner.
I'm not a heavy user as the machine freezes so frequently it's annoying. But I'm going on a trip soon and will have to rely on this one, so I REALLY appreciate your help. :-)
I'm running Avira (free version)
It is up to date and I'm running another system scan now just to be 100% sure.

Ok now for phase 2 head over and download Malwarebytes Free here

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-An...j=dl&tag=button

Save it, install it, update it, run it and decline the full version trial. Run a quick scan and then take reccomended actions,(you might be prompted to restart) let me know how many it finds.

You might also want to consider uninstalling Avira and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Which can be obtained from here http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx
