There have been grave mistakes made at the YMCA that's for sure. It is just wishful thinking that an administration that botched things up as much as they did with the new expansion would be capable of admitting their mistakes, fixing them, establish open communication with their members or willingly create an unbiased member survey. They didn't listen the first time around and have continued along the same path even with a so called "communications department" now established.

I'm sorry you think you don't have the energy or will to "fight" it all but thank-you for starting this topic. Perhaps you under estimate yourself? Do you realize that without your initial comment over 5500 people would not have viewed this thread? That's a lot of people viewing the topic. In fact those numbers are approaching the Y's total membership so I bet a lot of the members are reading this thread. Kudos to you for starting it by coming forth with your concerns.

I believe positive change can and does many times start with just one person.

I just toured the new FLCC expansion that is opening next week (student union, bookstore, various offices) and WOW....it is impressive. Open spaces cleanly decorated with a combination of bright pops of orange and yellow offset with muted grays, white, maroon, and subtle blues. A grand wide staircase adorned with a natural rock wall on one side and a display of clear, blue, and yellow rectangular glass windows at the top of the staircase. Large windows lining the perimeter of the building allowing natural sunlight in. Functional, sturdy, simplistic furniture displaying a blend of a futuristic and retro look of the 1960's. A combination of accent stylistic track lighting along with large spherical textured globe lighting. The bookstore is wide open an spacious with sleek displays. The cafeteria serving area is bordered with orange squares of glass. It is organized, fresh and clean looking. Adjacent to the ordering area is a large, open, window lined area filled with small round tables/chairs and modern sleek "comfy" chairs to lounge in. This is an inviting space just waiting for students and staff to enjoy.

What an awesome job FLCC has done with it's millions of dollars of contributor's money to ultimately provide their students and staff with an expansion that is functional, appealing and blends well with the existing structure. The expertise of the design is inviting and just plain feels good. FLCC obviously had an accomplished professional management team with clear vision that made this project happen. Job well done. Canandaigua is fortunate to have this jewel in our community.

On the other hand, the Canandaigua YMCA's management team and lack of vision resulted in the delivery of a dsyfunctional maze of hallways, a dark and dank oversized lobby, gutters in the pool, tiered inadequate parking lots, unprivate lockers rooms, disjointed activity rooms scattered all over the building, and shabby old furniture in the old lobby that looks like it was picked up off the side of the road. All this for eight million dollars???? If I were a contributor I would be "po'd". What a waste of money. On top of all that the place is being run by the very same people who created this mess who don't want to hear about THEIR mistakes from YOU the member.

Obviously the management doesn't care to fix any of the problems but I wonder with the lack of participatory responses to this thread....do the members really care? The Canandaigua YMCA is an expanded version of what it was before the big new pool was added. A poorly managed facility in a tired old building and certainly nothing our community can be proud of. It is neither functional nor inviting and is operating under unopposed circumstances.

For me, the Canandaigua Y in it's current condition is just not worth my time and I'm glad I am no longer a member especially when I am reminded of what it's like to hang out in really nice places. What is worth my time though is trying to figure out a way to facilitate positive change at the Canandaigua YMCA so that I could have a place to work out that was clean, inviting, and just plain felt good to be at. It would cost some bucks I'm sure but with the right management team many positive changes could be made at the Canandaigua YMCA to make it a nice place to go worthy of this town instead of the user unfriendly rat maze it has become.

Wow! That sounds pretty nice. Quite an expansion and remodeling effort took place. Yet, we wonder why our state taxes our so high, and our state is in debt.
