A small update. He took it to Staples and the computer is running fine, but the screen is not working. They said it was either a loose wire or the LCD needs to be replaced and they do not do this type of repair. Any help?
Could be a loose wire but more likely the inverter(Cheap fix). If it's the screen thats not overly expensive but it can be a little time consuming to replace. When the computer is on can you see anything on the screen. You may have to try looking at an angle.

Oh yeah, it suddenly started working on it's own about two days later and has been fine since. We have made sure that we have everything backed up in case something else happens.
