I like my tinted windows. They make my SUV look like the Batmobile...

A few weeks ago I got pulled over for speeding. No radar detector could have helped in this case. It was all my fault. I was 40+ MPH over the limit and then I saw the big 5-Ohh in the median violently pointing me to pull over. He was not in hot pursuit yet. But I complied. I probably could have gotten away safely but the wife and child was in the vehicle. So I pulled over right away and waited for him to pull up behind me.

Anyways...He saw my tinted windows and came right up to me with his measuring tool and wrote me a ticket for the excessive window tint instead of speeding.

Then he told me I would have to remove the tint or else.

At this point I am more than a little joyeous. He gave me a break.

But why in the world would I ever give up my window tint if it will get me out of a speeding ticket?

Word...

State tint laws should be standardized.

NYS has pretty tight *tint* laws. It's hard to determine how tinted is illegal considering auto parts stores in NY still sell tint that can be onsidered *illegal*

However the law is in effect for officer safety. They need to be able to see into the car and all and how many occupants.

Imagine being a police officer approaching and vehicle they just pulled over for driving 40 miles over the speed limit like they just robbed a bank and NOT being able to see into that vehicle??

I`d say that would be a shot in the dark?

"teedoff27" I think vehicular glass tints should be standardized.
Police agencies state-to-state or on the federal level (military bases) could deal with it better.

I don't believe it's legal to have ANY tinting ahead of the door post of the front seat. Even if you could, it would be a danger to yourself and others to have it too dark. Nothing beyond factory tinting should be legal.

Nothing beyond factory tinting on the front side windows is legal.

In New York state, nothing beyond factory tinting, in any color, on the front side windows is legal.

I understand and agree with NYS laws..... I just think it is misleading for Auto Part stores in NYS selling what could be illegal. Not many are aware of the current law

The window tint isn't illegal. Using it is. The same concept as with the paraphernalia.

In NY you can tint your front windows but it must allow more than 70% of light in. This is where I found it. http://www.tintshop.com/nystintlaw.pdf

FWIW, factory tint on front side windows allows 70% of light in. Adding any tint beyond that makes it illegal.

Because it probably won't work forever. My guess is that there is an electronic record somewhere of you being given a warning.

That is interesting.

Would you care to elaborate how such a system would work?

I don't think the police have access to your dmv record.

Are they keeping their own database?

Wouldn't that be a form of profiling?

I live in Va. Laws vary per state.
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Virginia, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

On windshield. Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Front sides. Must allow more than 50% of light in.
Rear sides Must allow more than 35% of light in.
Rear window. Must allow more than 35% of light in.

If you pull up to a road block with your windows(front side driver & passenger) rolled down, does a police officer have the right to demand that you roll them up for inspection?
