I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop (2 gig memory)running Vista that has suddenly developed the bad habit of just turning itself off, right in the middle of normal use or when its idle. Anybody have a thought on this? Thanks.

First thought would be over-heating. Can you hear the fan?

Yes, but only occasionally. Maybe three months ago I had the thought that the fan was on a lot a began shutting the computer down at night, just to be safe. I had been an "always on" guy. It has been running fine until about a week ago and now it goes down almost daily, some days twice. BTW, thanks for your participation here, Ovidtech. I learn a lot from you.

No, I don't feel a lot of extra heat but it's always been fairly warm underneath. Maybe I should just elevate it and see what happens? What kind of repair might this point to?

Could be a problem with the fan itself, or lint and dust buildup in the cooling fins. Often the maker will post a BIOS update that can resolve known problems with the fan/speed control.
Never run it on your lap, pillow or other surface that blocks airflow.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the browser. I was using Windows and the version 8 of Explorer came in during a update. I uninstalled the browser and the problem went away.
