More Medicaid Eligibility Standards Urged
Watkins Glen, N.Y. - The Schuyler County Legislature Monday night urged state lawmakers to increase verification requirements for Medicaid eligibility. County Administrator Timothy O'Hearn told county legislators that standards for getting Medicaid benefits and renewing eligibility have recently been relaxed.
He said its leading to more fraud and in many cases tying the hands of county social services employees who are trying to deal with it.
O'Hearn said, "An applicant, and again understand that this is a minority, but an applicant may be abusing the system and we have no way to investigate that and actually no means to verify and in some cases deny eligibility because the requirements have become so relaxed."
Last year's state budget eliminated the eligibility requirements for face to face interviews, finger imaging and asset tests for applicants for Medicaid that are conducted by counties.Reported by: Jeff Stone
