In about 90 days we will once again be asked to vote on a school budget.

Every year we cry and moan after the fact. Well here we are and we have about 90 days to do something about it.

In the Seneca Falls School District we face decreasing student enrollments yearly yet district staff numbers never go down.

Right now Seneca Falls school district tax rates are 24% higher than Waterloo.

SF school district tax rate is currently at $27.24 while Waterloo is at $21.96.

A 24% higher school tax rate than Waterloo. (27.24-21.96)/21.96 = 24%

We must demand staff cuts. Scary but true, if the district cut 40 we would still be overstaffed. Why do educators get so many free periods in the day?

299 human beings collect a paycheck directly from our school district while our student enrollment stands at around 1300. About 240 employees are full time so thats a ratio of 1 staff member for every 5.4 students.

We must demand program cuts.

We must demand FULL DISCLOSURE of all reserve accounts!!!!!!!! They keep burying money in reserve accounts then in future budgets they say they are going to spend $1.5 million dollars on something we may or may not need but they advertise and spin the spending as free since it won't cost us any NEW TAX DOLLARS.

Last year a school board member wrote on this forum that until we vote down a budget then they will noy look at cutting anything. Even if we vote down a budget there is a chance that they can implement what they CLAIM is a contingency budget.

Basically they don't respect the tax payers and do what they want. This system of budget creation and basically pre-approval has turned the tax payers into helpless and hopeless beggards.

What can we do to stop their overspending? Where do we start? Do we need to start a petition where we demand a spending freeze OR cuts now?

Please lets get involved.

This goes for all the Waterloo folks as well. Don't let the rhetoric replace the facts.

I can't find the dates for the Waterloo Central School District budget.

http://www.waterloocsd.org/district.cfm

Waterloo minutes are updated monthly through October of 2009

Seneca Falls has 134 teachers for 1379 students. 10.3 : 1

Waterloo has 159 teachers for 1950 students. 12.3 : 1

Seneca Falls would have to get rid of 22 teachers to have the same student teacher ratio as Waterloo.

A side note. South Seneca, Romulus and Seneca Falls are all in the same sinking numbers boat. Their student population is dropping year after year yet they refuse to cut teachers or staff !

Not only should our school taxes not be going up, they should be going down!

Here we go. Truth is, we moan, groan and cry before, during and after school budget votes but none of the criers, groaners and moaners do anything constructive about it. And when "called out" on it, they cry, groan and moan even louder that there's nothing they can do about it anyway. JoJo?

How about an online petition. Therre are several sites for that. Then they can be printed out and given to the boards. We should be demanding 0% increases if not cuts.

A question: Why is the SFSD teacher to student ratio so low?

A little research of seven towns in seven different states averaged 17.9% while the SFSD is 10.3%.

The graduation ratio for the same seven towns is an average of 79.2%.

The national average graduation ratio is 83%.

What is the graduation ratio for the SFSD? The N.Y. average is 70%.

I also found the teacher to student ratio national average is 15.5%, the highest is Utah at 22.4%, and the lowest is Vermont at 11.3%. The N.Y. number is 13.3%.

Ok, there you have it, a $1.7M shortfall. The letter is preparing for the inevitable tax hike.

LOL. . .it always comes down to that. What about your neighbors that have been laid off due to budget cuts and other nonsense?? I dont think it's up to us anyways, it's up to the person who is in charge of running the school on who they think they need to "fire."

I dont think anybody wants to see anyone lose their job but when people are out of jobs and they cant pay their own bills, do you think they care about if a teacher has a job in SF because they are close to losing their home, NYSEG shutting them off, losing their car, not to mention all the other sacrifices already made???

FYI. . they can offer earlier retirements to keep the younger/lower paid teachers.

Big can of worms . . . how about consolidating Seneca Falls and Waterloo School Districts? Okay . . . let me have it!

Seneca Falls already ruled they were better than Waterloo a few years ago and voted that merger down. Not my opinion but thats how some of the SF Mynderasians felt.
