Helping Tioga County Habitat For Humanity

The Tioga County Habitat for Humanity is out of money.

It's former Treasurer's accused of stealing $50,000.

27 year old David Heckman, the group's former treasurer, has been charged with grand larceny, allegedly stealing more than $50,000.

"It's been a very devastating situation for us as an organization. However, we need to move forward and complete these projects as we have ensured our host families they will be taken care of," says Fred McGuire, Chairman of the Tioga County Habitat for Humanity.

Some of the board members have taken out loans, just to cover the group's obligations.

"We also have found ourselves to be several thousands of dollars in debt with suppliers that were never paid, with insurances that were not paid, premiums that were not paid and taxes near default," says McGuire.

Now the group is hoping to get some help from the community.

It's asking for donations to help pay the bills and get families in need into brand new homes.

Sadly, it happens all the time. We had well over $50,000 taken from our organization and we are just one of many in this local area with similar stories. (Fortunately, we recovered the majority of the money through prosecution.)

Have they found Heckman in an alley yet? Greedy, heartless and evil are probably his better traits.

Former pastor admits stealing from Habitat for Humanity

OWEGO -- The former pastor of a Newark Valley church has pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny, a felony, and could spend seven years in prison for stealing from Tioga County Habitat for Humanity.

David L. Heckman Jr., who will be sentenced May 24, faces 3 1/2 to 7 years of incarceration under the plea agreement, said Tioga County Assistant District Attorney Judith Quigley.

According to court records, Heckman, 27, was indicted on one felony count of second-degree grand larceny, accused of stealing nearly $111,000 from Habitat for Humanity. During July 2005 and October 2009, Heckman took cash payments from homeowners who live in houses built by the nonprofit. The payments were supposed to pay the mortgages for the properties.

Heckman was a member of Habitat's board of directors and treasurer of the Tioga chapter of the charitable organization.

In addition, Heckman was indicted on one felony count of fourth-degree grand larceny, accused of stealing more than $1,600 from First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Newark Valley. Heckman was a pastor at the church during the time when the thefts occurred -- between March and October of 2009, according to court files.

The plea agreement satisfies the second-degree and fourth-degree grand larceny charges.
