Election '09: Ballot scanners raise privacy issues

ALBANY -- Change isn't always easy, and that came through this week in the comments of voters who marked paper ballots and scanned them into machines.

A number of voters said they didn't have enough privacy, and the areas where they filled out ballots weren't the right size or were in the wrong place, said John Conklin, a state Board of Elections spokesman.

At a few poll sites, people who were signing in were right next to voters who were marking their ballots, he said.

Nineteen counties participated fully in a pilot program for new voting machines

Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Putnam, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties were among the counties that participated fully in the pilot. Twenty-eight counties used a combination of lever machines and paper ballots/optical scanners.

In Chenango, privacy was an issue for some voters, said Harriet Jenkins, Republican elections commissioner.

"We're trying to figure out how to make it better," she said.

Speaking of elections, does anyone know if the water district passed in the Town of Wayne? I haven't seen any news on it. I called Steuben County Board of Elections and was told that that was a local issue. I called the Town of Wayne and there is no answer.
