Well this is Day 0 of the Windows 7 public release -- anyone using the GA version? Any opinions?
How about MS Bing?
I've got a buddy that works at MS in the Consumer Electronics Division -- any opinions (let me just state that I personally have not traditionally been a big fan of the technology coming out of Redmond...). Just wondering what others think.

From what I have seen Win7 is a needed change from XP which is just plain old and Vista was almost like Windows ME -- not fun.

I've played with Linux a bit as well and that seems to get easier to install and use every day...

I was looking up info on Windows 7 and found out that there is no Outlook Express for email included in Windows 7. Is there a way to use Windows 7and still keep Outlook Express? Just wondering.

yes, I believe Windows 7 does not contain any e-mail client. The suggested client is Windows Live Mail which can be downloaded. Apparently this will also run on Vista so if that is your current OS you can download Live Mail try it out and then you will at least have an idea of what is coming in Windows 7.
Apparently it is similar to Outlook Express so you may find it works for you.

Of course windows 7 also allows you to run an XP emulator so you can run standard XP programs as though you were on a Windows XP machine. I haven't looked into that much but it is touted as one of the new features...

As long as your processor supports virtualization.

I just bought an Acer 10.1 1 GB RAM Netbook. It is running XP and it already has Live Mail installed on it. Live Mail kicks in every once in a while when some attachments are openned.

I recently bought a new computer which is supposed to have Vista installed. It's due to arrive this Friday. Also is a free upgrade to Windows 7. In fact, it just MAY come with Windows 7. In any case... I'll let you know how I make out.

Yesterday I took the plunge and "upgraded" my desktop to Windows 7. It wasn't too painful but I learned some interesting tidbits; specifics below:
Desktop: Dell XPS410 Intel Core2Duo E6600 (2.4GHz/1066FSB)
Memory: 2GB
Graphics: nVidia 7300LE
Storage: Intel SATA RAID controller (quad-drives; two separate RAID-1 groups)
Initial OS: Windows XP 32-bit
New OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

As you probably know the upgrade path from XP to Win7 requires a fresh OS install. That was pretty clean; I already had most of my data and "important" stuff stored on the 2nd RAID-group on my desktop so I could have partitioned my "c" drive with no issues. However I still chose to simply overwrite C and install Win7 in the existing partition (it renames existing windows to windows.old).

The install process went fine and when complete I was good to go. I have an internal RAID controller which worked fine with no special drivers to load; also I have a dual monitor config. which also worked flawlessly; as did my onboard sound card. Overall, not too bad and roughly equivalent to XP -> to -> Vista upgrades.

The issues:

  • 64-bit support is limited
  • You should have min. 4GB RAM to leverage Win7 64-bit
  • Cisco VPN client does not run in 64-bit Win7 env., if you use this currently I found that NCP makes a client that is compatible (though expensive)
  • Sometimes you have to tweak a setup program to get it to work (e.g. installing my networked printer; I had to use the Vista driver; set it to run in Vista compatibility mode and to "run as Administrator"; after I did that it ran fine

Major Gotchas:
workspace sharing does not work with Win7 (definitely not 64-bit but may not work in 32-bit either). So if you use Google Sync, or Microsoft Office Groove; expect to have some issues...

Final Analysis:
I spent probably around 8 hours on this process. In between re-installing programs; tweaking the user interface and getting a workaround for my Cisco VPN issue. My desktop computer is nearly three years old; fortunately even by today's standards it is no slouch so it runs Win7 fine. I really like the interface in Win7 it is cleaner than Vista and leaps and bounds better than XP (just my opinion).
I actually bought this computer originally to run Windows Vista 64-bit but never installed it because I didn't want to deal with all those issues and compatibility, etc. That being said, if you aren't sure whether you want to go with 32-bit or 64-bit let me just say that I believe the 32-bit has much broader compatibility and you may hit less issues. Of course the issue I hit were pretty specific and the only real showstopper for me was the Cisco VPN client as that is a necessity for work; however the NCP workaround is OK and hopefully Cisco will release something soon that works with Win7 64-bit.

The 64 bit Cisco client thing is not a Windows 7 problem. Cisco has made it abundantly clear they will not release a 64bit IPSec client, and will be taking this time to push their SSL AnyConnect client instead.

ShrewSoft is purportedly a working substitute for the IPSec client. It's a free download.

Ahhh., the Mac. You raise a good point; I used Mac products extensively in the past and it is neat to see how Mac ripped off Xerox; then Windows ripped off Mac. Up until the release of Windows XP the Mac was hands down a better overall system. It had more ease of use; greater functionality and was much more robust.
That being said; with the advent of Windows 7 it seems the playing field is a lot more level. The later releases of MacOS are solid and their decision to move to Unix underpinnings a few years ago was an excellent move; however their interface seems to be more of an evolution whereas if you take a look at Windows the interface changes there are pretty radical.

In the end it comes down to personal preference; although compatibility issues still abound and there is still a pretty hefty price premium if you choose to go with Apple products.

For consumer use I think Windows 7 looks pretty good; I personally have only been using it a short while but so far, so good. Mac OS also a good choice; a little pricey but certainly less malware to worry about and with the OSx kernel and the movement to Intel hardware not bad by any means.

Then of course there is always Linux; it too has come a long way; Ubuntu is very consumer-friendly and the price is right...

The computer came in Friday and I got the chance to set it up yesterday. As predicted, it came with Windows 7 installed. You know what... I like it! If I had to say one thing about it, it's that I find it much more user-friendly than Vista ever was.

So far, so good! Maybe MS actually put some time into testing this thing out properly before letting JQ Public do it for them?

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

•1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

•1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

•16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

•DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Another option that they are offering this time is the Triple pack upgrade for $149 at most retailers for 3 different systems, so at about $50 a copy its a deal.

Yes you get 3 Keys and I believe Both the 32 bit and 64 bit together for your choice.

Click on the below link to head over to Microsofts page to see If your system meets the requirements.
