State’s Lyons bridge detour sends drivers on 19-mile trek

LYONS — New York state has one answer to the construction that closed the Route 31 bridge over the Canandaigua Outlet last week: A 19-mile detour through Phelps that could easily cost drivers a half hour.

Common sense has another answer: The Leach Road and Route 14 bridges, which cut the daunting detour to a mere half mile.

Lori Maher, a Department of Transportation spokesperson, said the state picked the long way around for two reasons. First, because the Leach Road Bridge has an 18-ton weight limit, meaning large trucks can’t use it. And second, the state likes to keep detoured drivers on its own roads rather than sending them onto county roads.

“We do understand that it’s a little bit confusing, or I guess it could be questionable why we did that,” Maher said. “Hopefully people who are familiar with the area will just kind of find their own way.”

Businesspeople along Route 31 certainly hope they will. They’re effectively on a dead-end street until the $1.3 million bridge reconstruction is done in July.

If drivers take the state’s detour, they won’t pass anywhere near the businesses along the 6-mile stretch of Route 31 between Newark and Lyons. And both detours bypass the businesses on the quarter-mile stretch of Route 31 between the outlet bridge and Route 14.

a good chunk of the stand’s business comes from people just driving by.

19 miles versus a 1/2 mile detour. They're idiots.

When you look at your investments and wet your pants.
