'Murderer' spray-painted on statue of Columbus in Binghamton

Someone spray-painted that word this weekend down the side of a statue of Christopher Columbus, located next to the Broome County Courthouse in downtown Binghamton.

While the statue had been cleaned by Saturday evening, remains of the graffiti could still be seen.

"The destruction of county property is disrespectful," Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said in a statement released Saturday night. "Regardless of your beliefs, this type of action is unacceptable."

The graffiti was discovered early Saturday afternoon, a Binghamton police official said.

As of Sunday afternoon, Binghamton police did not have any suspects in the case and are not aware of any similar incidents of graffiti in Binghamton.

Binghamton detectives are currently investigating the incident, police said.

>What has the Catholic Church done to "you", Master Timbo?

>Remember Master Timbo, Cristoforo Colombo was working for a woman, and also, she was Spanish!

> I believe, you should take all your grievances up with the Spanish government, if you have proof atrocities where commented by ole Cristoforo.

Oh. that's a big, fat roar. If you were actually serious about law and order, you wouldn't be taking the side that's responsible for violating our laws, treaties and all that's humanly decent in the first. The Original Sin as it were. Fraud.

Nonsense. He broke too many laws to count. He ordered the murder of many hundreds of natives, sanctioned rapes and torture, he stole sailor's rewards and plundered countless native villages. He carved natives in half, dropped them in vats of boiling soap, ripped suckling newborns from their mothers and smashed their heads onto the rocky shoals. He stole tons of unclaimed booty, kidnapped and enslaved the indigenous as well as his own crew and repeatedly lied in his reports to the crown. All expressly illegal acts under the banner(s) of which he sailed.

Bartolome De Las Casas, Bishop of Chiapas, described these exploits. “Such inhumanities and barbarisms were committed in my sight as no age can parallel,” he wrote. “My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature that now I tremble as I write.”

He was a barbaric, criminal monster of the vilest degree and you're either a bald-faced liar or patently ignorant of history and the fundamental laws of man to say otherwise. You are at the very least a raging hypocrite and an apologist for genocide.

Reward offered in Columbus statue vandalism case - 10/12/17 01:49 PM

Reward offered in Columbus statue vandalism case

The day after Columbus Day was celebrated, the Christopher Columbus statue in downtown Binghamton was vandalized for the second time in five weeks.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and District Attorney Steve Cornwell are requesting information on who spray painted the bust of Columbus sometime early yesterday morning.

The Sons of Italy Lodges of Binghamton and Endicott have raised funds for a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Garnar says police are investigating surveillance video of the Broome County Courthouse lawn.

Former County Executive and current Stella D' Argento Lodge President Barbara Fiala was on the committee that raised thousands of dollars to erect the memorial in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World.

"To see it defaced, it hurts. This is not just as an Italian or as a part of the county. It is just tearing a community apart. We should be together and celebrate all the culture with the rich community and heritage that we have," said Fiala.
