I don't think we lost alot losing... whats his name, with Devendorf and Rautins back it fills that void and finally some BIG men, even if they are frosh and soph's! I am still expecting Harris to explode into the player/leader I think he can be.
We could be a force in the East IF the playing maturity level improves from last year.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/04/08 02:11 PM

They always need to work on FT....the 4 that will be handling the ball are all 80 percent shooters though...so im not real worried.
Posted by: nymmamma

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/05/08 12:47 AM

I think SU has a good team this year. FT's have historically been their problem. The Big East games, one or two points can mean the difference between a win or a loss. I like that they've got some depth on the bench, for a change.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/09/08 09:43 PM

Defense? Anybody watch the game today think they looked confused at times????

Love the freshmen.

Good to see Devo starting to make those awesome moves of his.

Johnny Flynn - what can I say the kid is a giant heart of gold. However he got greedy a couple of times and it burned him in the second half.

AO - God for such a big man he can explode!!! Would be nice if he would make a free throw now and then,

Like Jackson.

Kristoff Ooooogenut! - Talk about your blue collar player. No fear!

Paul Harris - A so so game yet he still scored a ton of points. He does seem to draw the ire of Coach B all the time.

Deep Deep Deep team..... They have the talent. Can they get the job done this season?

Perhaps he draws the ire because Coach B realizes what potential Paul has to be superstar great, just like I keep saying and waiting for-

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/16/08 02:34 PM

The sole purpose of Boeheim loading up his "pre-Big East" schedule with pushover games is to pad his record in an attempt to get an invite to the NCAA tournament.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/16/08 02:50 PM

Part of the criteria for a tourney bid is strength of schedule.

Then please explain the reason for the creampuff teams they play before getting to the Big East teams.

Last year they were 21-14 overall, but just 9-9 in the Big East.
Posted by: mutantmaster

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/17/08 01:01 PM

9-9 in a conference that sent 7 or 8 teams to the tournament is not all that bad. I recall a couple of those losses were pretty close and could have made the difference in an NCAA and a NIT bid. Pretty much every team has an easy schedule to help tune up for the games in January. Go ahead check out #1 North Carolina's schedule. UC Santa Barbara, N. Carolina Asheville, Evansville, Oral Roberts, etc. are not your typical top 25 teams>

Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/19/08 03:34 PM

Doesn't mean they got lucky. They settled too much for the outside shot. Flynn and Devendorf took over the game in the 2nd half. Richmond also bombed away from 3 in the first half. Defensive adjustment shut that down in the 2nd half.
Posted by: Gio

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/19/08 05:53 PM

Lucky my ass. They played a good team, made the adjustments on defense for the second half and Devo / Flynn took over as Coach64 pointed out. Luck had nothing to do with it. When will everybody wake up and realize that the so-called mid-majors are not so mid-major any more? Look what RI did to Duke at Duke!!!
Posted by: Jelloshot

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/19/08 06:56 PM

I didnt see any luck involved, I saw good D. However, the TV announcers even mentioned SU's complacency issues when playing teams they are "expected" to beat- such as Richmond. Any of us who have followed the team as long as most of us have, know for a fact that it is one of the fuels for the Boeheim bashers. The lack of motivation sometimes exhibited by the team(s) against "lesser " teams has been evident for years.
I know that with the talent and depth they have on the team this year, I believe/expect/hope they could win most games by 10-15 points, but that just doesnt happen anymore unless everything is clicking perfectly and the other team isnt. I agree w/ Gio, the "mid level" teams are not necessarily that anymore. Hell I'm still mad about losing to Verfreakingmont - how many years ago now??? !

SU's Devendorf accused of hitting woman
by syracuse.com
Wednesday November 19, 2008, 7:55 AM

Gloria Wright / The Post-Standard
SU guard Eric Devendorf.Syracuse University student Kimberly Smith, 20, is accusing SU basketball player Eric Devendorf of hitting her in the face with a closed fist early in the morning of November 1st.

Smith told Syracuse police she was driving on Walnut Avenue around 3:00 a.m. when several people began kicking her car. When she got out to ask them to stop, Smith says Devendorf walked up to her and struck her in the face.

Devendorf has not been charged and Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the Syracuse University Judicial Affairs Office.

Nice win. Yes Florida is ranked but they are a pretty young team. SU will have to improve especially at the free throw line if they want to win in the Big East this year.

This is probably one of the deepest the conference has been in a long time.

Well Syracuse has a lot more players with at least 2 or more years of college playing time than Florida. 8 for Syracuse compared to just 3 for Florida.

Look I'm just saying that it was a nice win but it doesn't mean that SU deserves to be ranked yet. I think they still need a couple more quality wins. Tonight will be a step toward that. If they win, yes then next week maybe they should be at least a 24 or 25 in the rankings.

It is going to be a very tough season for them especially this year. People are getting a bit ahead of themselves.

I think we are on the same page here Coach as far as the rankings.

Some SU fans are getting a bit overexcited about one win. I just don't think it was that big of an upset.

Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/25/08 07:01 PM

I dont think it was an upset at all, outside of the fact that Florida was ranked and SU wasn't. Seeing what Florida had on the floor, and what SU had on the floor, Syracuse should have been the one ranked and Florida not. But Rankings are garbage this early in the season.
Posted by: PYmastersteve

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/25/08 07:06 PM

worst part about rankings is taht they are based on pre-season stuff..they should wait till like 5-6 games into the season and then decide ranks from there

Ranking is a joke. You have your prennial favs that coaches and sports writers always vote for. I never put much stock in them. I still think it was a good win but there is plenty of room for improvement and hopefully these kids will.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 11/26/08 01:28 PM

Impressed with their grit to keep coming back. They kept making runs, and Kansas kept pulling back away. Big jump to man, and Flynn and Harris were animals. Devo and Flynn had way too many turnovers, but they also had so many big buckets. I like this teams character so far, they just wouldn't go away, kept fighting, no matter how bad they were playing at a certain time.

They are so balanced, this team has all the makings of something special.

Turnovers they do need to curb. I slept through the entire game! How did they do on free throws? That's always been a problem for them.

They did look out of it in the first half.

Did anyone by chance watch the UCONN - Buffalo game? The Bulls almost had themselves a major upset. UCONN held on to a win by the skin of their fingers...

I don't care about rankings at this time of year. They will only matter in April.

When Big East play starts we shall see that SU is the 6th-7th best team in the Big East which will rank them somewhere around 30.

SU is too small, too streaky, and too eratic. And making too many of the same mistakes.

SU simply does not have any NBA caliber players. Flynn is likely not going pro. Neither Harris nor Devo.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/05/08 02:55 AM

And who on this year's squad could come close to Anthony? We lost that with Donte Greene last year...

We simply don't have a single player this year comparable to Greene, Warrick, Anthony.

Yes, SU will be competitive. But they are going nowhere near the final 4 this season.

And we don;t even know the future of Devo. He could be gone the next week or 2...The most experienced player on this team.
Posted by: nymmamma

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/05/08 02:59 AM

They've played like 8 games in the last 14 days. Only injury so far is Scoop, and he hasn't played that much. Devo's situation is a concern, but I LIKE this team. They have depth on the bench, for a change. Final Four? Probably not, but nationally ranked throughout the season and exciting to watch.

Kobe has almost a foot on Flynn.

And height does matter in the NBA.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/05/08 02:52 PM

Flynn will indeed be playing in the NBA. He is one of the best PG's in the country as a Sophomore. He has range, toughness, ability to drive, ability to distribute the basketball, and he has that killer instinct. He will be a 1st rounder whenever he comes out.

Harris, is a tweener, he can rebound, problem is his size. I think Harris has a future, but it may be the NFL.

Rautins will be a professional somewhere. Tall, and a shooter, lots of international expirience

Devo's shot is as a distributing PG.

Arinze Onuaku will have a fine career in the NBA. He is so raw, and so good.

Well you don't seem to know much about basketball. You say certain players will be in the NBA and yet you don't even know about the draft or watch the game. HAHA.

Look who's talking out their butt.

Aren't you also the same person who in another thread said they were a long time Jets fan? Who said that Bernie Kosar played for the Jets.

Yep you sure know your sports.

I would love to hear you discuss hockey. You know that's the game with a puck that they play on ice.

Yes I think Flynn will probably be in the NBA. Point guards with his talent are very saut after. Harris is very strong and very athletic. I just don't see him in the NBA. He is not a true guard and he is too small to play the forward position.

As for Devendorf forget it. He is a good player but no where near the NBA level.

That is just my opinion, what do I know. Besides I stopped watching the NBA several years ago.

Just got home from a Christmas party and SU and Devo hot topic. Someone mentioned that there is a code of conduct for NCAA hoops, but it's way different than h.s. code of conduct. I'm assuming his getting arrested is a violation of the code of conduct. Isn't there a mandatory punishment for this sort of thing? I'm not suggesting SU send him to the tower...on the contrary. There should be a written policy on such a situation.

I dont know if you can call any game an easy win anymore there are so many goodm players in the country now a days that they all dont go to the big schools, these mid major teams are not pushovers any more. I saw a couple of players for Cleveland State that looked like they could play for big schools but for whatever reason werent highly recruited. Cleveland State was also picked to win the Horizon League this year. That was a good team cuse played last nite

The whole, "another cupcake" philosophy needs to stop. EVERY TEAM IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYS WEAKER TEAMS. When it's all said and done, Syracuse will have a top 10 SOS, and a top 10 RPI. Im so sick of the "just another cupcake" phenomenon.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/18/08 01:53 PM

#1 UNC has played...Penn, University of California Santa Barbra, Chaminade, UNC Ashville, Oral Roberts, Evansville, College of Charlston, and University of Nevada Reno

#2 UConn has played...Western Carolina, Hartford, LaSalle, Bryant, Deleware St, Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Farifield

#3 Pitt has played an especially powerhouse schedule...Farleigh Dickenson, Miami (Oh), Akron, IUPUI, Belmont, Duqense, Vermont, University of Maryland Baltimore County., Sienna.

Point is all large schools play smaller schools early in the season. #1 it gives smaller schools a chance to make revenue, as they are taking a portion of the gate back to where they came from. It gives them a chance to play some bigger teams, and perhaps build a resume so that perhaps more than 1 team will come out of their smaller conference and make it into the NCAA tourney.

The Big East has an 18 game schedule. It is the best and most difficult conference in the nation. Teams play on average 30 games in the regular season. If they are playing 18 conference dates, that leaves 12 open dates. This is where the majority of teams schedule their home games. If you play no smaller schools, and play all BCS conference non league games, you are setting yourself up for a long, grinding season in which better, larger conference school teams are going to be left out of the tournament, because smaller Mid Major teams are now going to have easier schedules get in.

The NCAA has a great amount of parity in it at the moment. There are very few cupcakes left anymore. Syracuse lost 1 game, in which they didn't play their best game. They lost that 1 game on a 60 ft, Fluke shot. They have beaten a good Richmond team, Florida and Kansas on the road. An ACC team in Virginia, a Cornell team that was in the NCAA tourney last year. They are traveling to Memphis on Saturday to play a team that lost in the NCAA championship game last year. This is a very good team who is playing one of the more difficult schedules in the country. You folks need to stop listening to Dick Vitale, and Doug Gottleib and start being objective with your own team.

That Vermont team was very, very good. They lost to Kansas on a buzzer beater AT Kansas that year. The selection committee played that game within 45 minutes of Vermonts campus. And we did lay an egg..haha

Gary Waters...Rutgers? Just off the top of my head. I didn't mean to imply that SU was the only team to play "cupcakes" (don't throw things at me, coach). It's like the Bills...started out, what 5-1, but all against traditionally losing teams.

No Devo for the game tomorrow night, and possibly no Flynn.
He didn't practice today due to soreness in his upper leg.
Coach B says it will be a game day decision whether he starts against Memphis.

If he doesn't play, will we have a 'walk on' playing point guard?

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/19/08 10:09 PM

I'd hate to be the person to keep flynn off the court. I think he will play, as for Devo the new suspension seems fitting and he gets it out of the way b4 the heart of the Bug East schedule as long as he does what he is supposed to

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 12/22/08 10:44 PM

Sophomore Jonny Flynn leads the Orange this season averaging 18.1 points per game.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore guard Jonny Flynn earned a spot on the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced on Monday. Flynn helped lead the Orange in a 2-1 week, including a 72-65 victory at #23/21 Memphis. He averaged 17.3 points per game for the week.

In Syracuse’s third win against a nationally-ranked foe this season, Flynn tallied a game-high 24 points and six assists against the Tigers. The sophomore played all 40 minutes with his points split evenly between the two halves of play.

Prior to its trip to Memphis, the Orange faced Cleveland State on December 15 and Canisius on December 17 in the Carrier Dome. Flynn was second on the team against CSU with 16 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Trailing 69-64, Flynn sank a three-pointer with 22 seconds to play which put the Orange within range to tie the game. Flynn closed out the game making 7-of-8 shots.

In the 82-60 victory against Canisius, Flynn recorded 12 points to be one of five players in double-digits. Syracuse trailed for almost the first seven minutes of the game before taking over the lead for the remainder of the game. Flynn combined with junior teammate Arinze Onuaku for nine points to help the Orange close out the first half on a 12-3 scoring run.

So far this season, Flynn has shot 69-129 for a team-leading 217 points. He has started all 12 games, averaging 18.1 points per game. Flynn also leads the team in assists and steals with 59 and 23, respectively.

The Orange returns to the Dome tonight for a 7 p.m. matchup with Coppin State. This is the final game before BIG EAST play begins when Syracuse hosts Seton Hall on Tuesday, December 30 at 7 p.m.

Report: Kings send Donte Greene to NBA’s D-league

Last Update: 6:27 pm

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - He passed up a chance to be a part of a top 10 team in college to go play under the bright lights of the NBA.

But after not seeing a single minute of action in Sacramento's last five games, Donte Greene is being sent down to the D-league.

According to a blog in the Sacramento Bee, Greene will depart for the Reno Bighorns Saturday. There, he will play with two other former SU stars -- Damone Brown and Gerry McNamara.

McNamara signed with the team earlier this week.

Greene has appeared in 24 games this season with the Kings, and even started four games because of various injuries to other players.

He becomes the first Kings player ever to be sent down to the D-league; no word yet on how long the team plans on keeping him there

The Hoyas play dirty and that's what put Rautins down. At least the knee is just banged up and not related to the ACL or it would be deja vous from last year. They need a big W against ND, next up. We couldn't make free throws (what else is new), nor could we buy a basket. It was painful to watch.

As dirty as the game was, the Rautins play was absolutely not dirty at all. That was 3 players going for a lose ball, and Rautins simply got rolled up on.

They played terrible defense in the first half. Georgetown also shot the ball better than they had all year. They will be fine.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 01/17/09 09:20 PM

Great great game. Rick Jackson is turning into a beast before our eyes. Devendorf and Rautins do not need to get into pissing matches shooting 3's with the other team.

The "T" call on Harris was terrible. This team is scary good when they get the ball down into AO. He needs to subscribe to the Rick Barry style of free throws.

@ #1 Pitt Monday night....already jacked up for it.

I love it when the students are 'in the house'. That sea of orange looks incredible on the Big Screen !

You could tell how badly they wanted that one. The intensity was surely THERE !!

How about AO "Playin" Point Guard, Gio ? That impressed the announcers.

The crowd's roar was deafening after that AO play! My ears are still ringing on that and then he started to bring it a second time. The T was bull. There were kids underneath the basket and he had to hang. We did wonder if maybe there was some words exchanged? Harangody who?????? We sat just above the students this time and it was crazy.

I don't know what Devo said to AO, who was sitting next to Coach on the bench,

Posted by: Gio

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 01/20/09 02:11 AM

No it really isnt. They lost on the road to a higher ranked team. They do need to get away from this playing flat crap they seem to have developed and it would be nice if they started making their foul shots.
Posted by: nymmamma

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 01/20/09 02:13 AM

And those 2 T's in the first half were inexcusable. At least Pitt missed all 4 free throw's.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 01/20/09 03:19 AM

Not a huge loss at all. They lost on the road to the #4 team in the country, who incidently is 137-10 in that building. They don't lose at home.

The T on Harris again was terrible. Pitt constantly is able to bump and ride and get no calls. Syracuse did not shoot a foul shot in the 1st half.

They simply turned the ball over too many times. You can't do that on the road against the #4 team in the country.

Syracuse freshman Mookie Jones out for year; will seek medical redshirt

Posted by Mike Waters / The Post-Standard January 26, 2009 4:13PM

Syracuse University freshman Mookie Jones will miss the remainder of the season due to a muscle tear in his right hip, SU coach Jim Boeheim said Monday.

Jones, a 6-foot-6 wing forward from Peekskill, N.Y., has played in just nine games this season. He will be eligible for a medical redshirt.

Jones said he has been experiencing pain in his right hip for most of the season, but x-rays initially did not reveal a problem. However, an MRI performed last week showed one and possibly two tears.

Boeheim said Jones will undergo surgery within the next week or two.

After suffering a severe sprain in his right ankle in Sunday's game against Louisville, Syracuse University guard Andy Rautins is doubtful for the Orange's game at Providence on Wednesday.

Rautins sustained the injury in the second half of Syracuse's 67-57 loss to Louisville at the Carrier Dome.

Rautins did not practice with the Orange on Monday. When asked about Rautins' status, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, "I don't think he's going to play.''

Injury bug continues to bite Syracuse hoops squad
Posted by mwaters January 27, 2009 18:04PM

The Syracuse University basketball team has sustained so many injuries that at this point it would be easier to list the Orange's healthy players.

Andy Rautins, Syracuse's starting guard, severely sprained his right ankle in Sunday's loss to Louisville. Rautins did not practice for the second straight day on Tuesday and will not play in Syracuse's game at Providence on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, SU center Arinze Onuaku apparently sustained a knee injury in the Louisville game. Onuaku experienced swelling in the knee well after the game. He also hasn't practiced for the last two days. Pete Moore, SU's director of athletic communications, said Onuaku will be a game-time decision at Providence.

Eric Devendorf, who began the season as a starter before relinquishing his starting job to Rautins while he served a two-game suspension in December, figures to replace Rautins in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Devendorf, however, has been limited in recent practices due to a bruised hip which he first injured in SU's win at South Florida on Jan. 2.

Mookie Jones, a 6-foot-6 freshman, learned this past week that he will miss the rest of the season due to muscle tears in his right hip. Jones, who has played in just nine games, will undergo surgery within the next week or so. He will be eligible for a medical redshirt.

Boeheim says Onuaku and Rautins should return for next game
Posted by mwaters January 29, 2009 13:43PM

In the wake of his team's three-game losing streak, Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim offered some hope on Thursday.

Speaking on the Big East coaches' conference call, Boeheim said injured starters Arinze Onuaku and Andy Rautins should be able to return to the practice floor this weekend, which means both should be ready for Syracuse's next game against West Virginia on Wednesday.

Rautins, who severely sprained his right ankle in Syracuse's loss to Louisville on Sunday, did not play in the Orange's 100-94 loss at Providence on Wednesday night. Onuaku experienced a flare-up of tendinitis in his right knee following the Louisville game. He didn't practice on Monday or Tuesday and didn't start at Providence. He tried to play, but was ineffective in 15 minutes of action. Onuaku managed only one rebound and zero points against Providence.

Boeheim said he thought Rautins would be able to practice this weekend and gave a similar report for Onuaku.

"Obviously, we need to get those guys back,'' Boeheim said.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 02/04/09 04:07 PM

Syracuse basketball in danger of complete collapse
Jeff DiVeronica • Staff writer • February 4, 2009

Losing at No. 5 Pittsburgh on Jan. 19 was understandable.

Losing on Jan. 25 at home to an emerging, seventh-ranked Louisville team wasn't good.

Losing with a depleted team on the road last Wednesday to Providence was worse.

But a loss tonight at the Carrier Dome to West Virginia would spell big trouble for the slumping Syracuse University basketball team.

It'd be a fourth straight loss for Orange (17-5), which has tumbled from No. 8 to No. 20 in the national rankings, and to take that kind of streak into games at No. 17 Villanova (17-4) on Saturday and next Wednesday at No. 1 Connecticut (20-1) would not be good.

Remember that NCAA Tournament berth that only a few weeks ago SU seemed on its way to sewing up? Well, not many teams that lose six straight will make the Big Dance this season.

So, if SU forward Paul Harris called last week's game at Providence, a 100-94 setback a must-win game, what's tonight?

Junior guard Andy Rautins and junior center Arinze Onuaku each could play for SU tonight, but their status remains unclear. Rautins missed the Providence game recovering from a severely sprained right ankle suffered against Louisville.

Onuaku played only 15 minutes, nursing tendinitis in his knee.

SU spokesman Pete Moore said Rautins will play, but Onuaku is a game-time decision.

West Virginia, in its second year under coach Bob Huggins, has lost two of its last three games (to Pitt and Louisville) and is nearly as desperate as SU for a win.

"This is such a hard league that, hey, all games are must-win games," Huggins was quoted as saying on MSNsportsnet.com. "You can get buried pretty quickly"

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 02/05/09 03:38 PM

They beat a team they should have beat. They will still lose at least 3 regular season games. Like I mentioned on the other thread a couple weeks ago. 24-7 at best. Now they may not even finish that well.

They are a good team, but not a dominate team. They should make the NCAA tourney if they don't completely collapse.

Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 02/05/09 04:13 PM

They are a lock for the tourney if they hit 20 wins. There out of conference schedule is too good. If healthy, they are a dominant team.

A lock? No they are not. 20 wins does not guarantee a berth.

They do have some quality non-conference wins.

But they still have some huge tests coming up. Connecticut, Nova (twice), Marquette. I think they lose three of these games. They still have Georgetown again.

Right now most of the "experts" have them at 9 or 10 seed.

Like I said before they should get in, but nothing is for sure at this point.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 02/05/09 05:12 PM

20 wins in is a lock...i see them at 23....

They have wins against Florida, @ Kansas, @ Memphis. They are the last team to beat Memphis.
Posted by: roadguy

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 02/05/09 05:54 PM

Come on Coach you know the tourney committee depend on the RPI.

SU right now is 25th RPI 29 Strength of Schedule with a 4-3 against the top 50, could end up 4-7

Florida 27th RPI 84 SOS 2-4 (not even currently ranked in the top 25 polls)

Memphis is 11 RPI but a 35 SOS and 2-3 vs top 50

Kansas 16 RPI 33 SOS 5-2

So based on this the Kansas win means more than the Memphis win.

Remember SU had 24 wins 2 years ago finished 5th in Big East and no NCAA bid

2001-2 season 23 wins 3rd in the Big East no NCAA bid

I didn't see the game. No point I knew they would lose this game to the Huskies, just like the last one at Villanova.

I said it going into this season that they will finish around 10-8 in the Big East. These were two losses I had penciled in.

They will lose at least two more before the Big East tourney. Marquette and either the Nova or Georgetown game. Both of those will be close but they will lose one of them in the last minute.

Sorry to be so negative.

Boeheim, Orange try for 20
by syracuse.com
Sunday February 22, 2009, 7:22 AM

Jim Boeheim and his SU basketball team go for their 20th win of the season today against No. 12 Villanova (1 p.m. WTVH-CBS5).

For Boeheim, a win would give him a 20-win season for the 31st time in his career, the most ever by a Division 1 coach. He would pass Dean Smith, who had 30 20-win seasons between 1962 and 1997.

For the Orange, a win would give them their second victory in a row against a Big East foe, bringing to an end a tough 10 game stretch of games for SU.

Donna Ditota writes that in order for SU to get its 20th victory, they'll have to contain Dante Cunningham, who scored a career high 31 points in the last game between these two teams (a 102-85 Villanova win).

APMike Waters, in his scouting report, points out SU is holding opponents to under 30 percent from beyond the three point line, while the 'Cats are shooting better than 36 percent when it comes to three pointers.

He also gives Eric Devendorf the nod for having the hot hand right now, saving Syracuse against Georgetown with 21 points after the half last week, including two 3-pointers in OT, which Waters says might be the most important shots of the season for the Orange.

After today, SU travels to St. John's Tuesday night to face the faltering Red Storm.

I'm not saying they should have won against Nova, but they sure could have. Rautins took a few 3 point shots from outerspace where he should have made a couple of passes and gotten closer to the basket.

Well they have a strong RPI.

If the bracket started like that today. You can basically pencil them out after the second round. They would not get by Duke.

I agree. They've been successful so far this eve going inside, but they couldn't do that against Nova on Sunday. The wins against Memphis and Kansas sure helped them.

Everyone knows that zone. They all practice against it. If he'd come out man to man, he'd catch 'em flatfooted.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/03/09 02:14 PM

You don't think that everyone knows man to man either, or a 1-3-1 zone or a press. It doesn't matter defense or offense you run in football, basketball, any sport. What matters is how well you execute what you run.

Some of you guys are so freaking fickle. They play a tough out of conference schedule, it's not tough enough. They win the games against lesser teams, they should win. They blow teams out, the defense drives you nuts.

Take this team for what they are....an average team in the big east, that when healthy and focused, can play and beat any team in the country. How soon we all forget that they beat #9 and Big 12 leading Kansas in Kansas City, and that they are the last team to beat Memphis, which they did in Memphis, without Devendorf.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/04/09 02:26 PM

But it was Rutgers how could they only score 19 in the first. Defense? Ha! its Rutgers they suck. Why did they only win by 30??? It should have been more. If only they wouldnt play a zone the other teams wouldnt know what to do. Coach B should retire. He is a horrible coach. 31 20+ wins were all agaisnt bad teams... Blah, blah, blah....

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/04/09 03:19 PM

Harris said in an interview last night he is coming back. The only way i can see Flynn going this year is if they guarantee him a lottery pick. If he stays this team will be scary good next year.

With Wesley Johnson being eligible, and Scoop coming back, as well as Triche coming in, they can realistically be 9-10 deep next year.

Jonny Flynn says he's returning to Syracuse -- for now

Dennis Nett / The Post-Standard
Jonny Flynn said Monday that "Jonny Flynn is coming back to Syracuse University."Syracuse University sophomore Jonny Flynn said Monday that as of right now, he's planning on coming back to SU for his junior year next season.
Flynn is averaging a team-high 17.3 points per game this season. He ranks second in the Big East with 6.3 assists per game. He is a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, which is presented to the nation's top point guard.

Prior to Syracuse's practice at Manley Field House on Monday, Flynn was asked about the prospects of this being his first and last NCAA Tournament apperance (forgive him the third-person references; the question was asked in the third person and he just responded in kind)

"Not at all. As of right now, Jonny Flynn is coming back to Syracuse University. Depending on what happens in the NCAA tournament, scenarios like winning the national championship, things can switch up, but as of right now, Jonny Flynn's coming back to Syracuse.''

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/11/09 05:19 PM

The only reason for him to come back is if his NBA draft stock is too low.

If he is not at least at top 20 pick he stays. He is projected a higher pick if he comes out for the 2010 draft. Right now he is projected 25-28 on most draft boards.

SU unleashes a spree of threes in win over Seton Hall
Posted by Donna Ditota/The Post-Standard March 12, 2009 12:48AM
Categories: Breaking News
New York -- He stood in the middle of the fray, chest out, mouth working.

Eric Devendorf and Eugene Harvey would both be assessed technical fouls for their extra-curriculars in Syracuse's 89-74 win Wednesday over Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament. But Devendorf, sensing a certain contempt from the Pirates, channeled that emotion where it counted.

SU's junior guard scored 19 points -- all of them in the second half and most of them from the perimeter. That effort, that expertise beyond the arc, translated into efficient 3-point shooting against Seton Hall.

SU, leaning on Devendorf's 5-for-8 night from beyond the arc and the 3-for-5 effort from Andy Rautins, converted half of the 18 3-pointers it attempted. SU shot 7-of-13 from 3-point range in the second half, when the Orange pulled away from the Pirates for good.

"It wouldn't shock me if they beat a Louisville, a Pittsburgh, a Connecticut," Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez said. "If they make shots, they can beat anybody in this conference."

They beat Seton Hall partly because they were so skilled at sinking the long ball.

Devendorf made his first 3 of the second half after Paul Harris penetrated and kicked to the perimeter. Devendorf knocked down the shot that gave SU a 39-37 lead.

About three game minutes later, Devendorf sank his most memorable 3 of the night. And Seton Hall players learned the hard way that it is best not to strike a match to the smoldering SU guard.

After Devendorf and Harvey were assessed those unsporting technical fouls, Kristof Ongenaet found Devendorf alone on the left baseline. Devendorf sank the shot, pumped his fist and just like that, SU owned a 50-44 cushion.

"That was really to prove our point," Devendorf said. "You can't really do that to us, you can't disrespect us like that."

If the Orange men sought respect for their perimeter game, they found it on Wednesday.

Devendorf's 3s came mostly from the corner and twice on feeds from Ongenaet, who finished with a career-high seven assists. SU's brilliant idea -- to work the ball inside-out -- left its shooters with huge, gaping shooting spaces.

Gonzalez said his players closed out better later in the game and Devendorf did drain a contested 25-footer. But most of the time, SU's shooters benefited from lots of room to let the ball fly.

"I mean, if it's wide open, I'm gonna knock it down," Devendorf said. "I have pretty good confidence in myself when I'm wide open."

It was wide open so much because of that ball movement. The Orange established a high-low presence with Ongenaet near the free-throw line and either Rick Jackson or Arinze Onuaku on the low block.

SU collected 30 assists -- which tied a Big East Tournament record -- in Wednesday's game and not so coincidentally put five players in double-figure scoring.

"When we get the ball firing around like that, making a few passes before we shoot it, it's always going to result in a good shot for us," Rautins said. "It did tonight and we knocked it down."

Those converted perimeter shots loom large for Syracuse tonight, when the Orange plays Connecticut at 9:30.

The last time these teams met -- back on Feb. 11 in Storrs -- the Orange tossed up 18 3-pointers and made five of them. That's 28 percent.

Against an intimidating, dominating shot blocker like Hasheem Thabeet, the ability to sink some shots from the perimeter will undoubtedly aid the Orange in its quest to unseat the tournament's No. 3 seed.

"If we can shoot like this (against UConn), it's gonna open up so much for us," SU guard Jonny Flynn (11 assists) said. "We play our best basketball when we're shooting the 3 and running the transition."

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 02:53 PM

I may be in the minority, but I feel that anytime that you have to watch a replay 52 times and take 5 minutes to tell if the ball was still on his fingertips, after it was ruled good in real time....then the basket is good.
Posted by: Jelloshot

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 03:58 PM

Watch it again
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 04:02 PM

Oh i watched it plenty. I still think that if you have to take that long, and still can't really tell if it is on his finger tips or not, it's good.
Posted by: roadguy

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 07:10 PM

I watched the game in HD last night. ESPN did a great job when they showed a frame by frame of the shot. It was clearly on his fingers when the clock hit 0.0.

The reason it was ruled "good" in real time is the official has to make a call whether it be a 2 or 3 point shot because the shot went in at the buzzer.

Watch again you can see Devo had not completely extended when the clock ran down.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 07:18 PM

I completely agree....but in days past of 1 camera angle, no HD, that shot is good.

BTW....didn't you guarantee a loss at Marquette?

Yes I did. You have to admit SU caught a break at the end of regulation in that game. Remember they were behind with less than around 15 secs in the game and then there was the foul on Jackson. Who missed one of his shots.

I also said they would lose both Villanova games, which they did and they just barely got by Georgetown in the second meeting.

I believe my prediction for regular season record was on the money.

Last night was a big win. It will help bump their seed for the tourney especially now that Florida looks to be headed to the NIT.

The one thing that stands out about their game last night were the free throws. I can't remember the last time an SU team shot that well from the stripe as a team. That is why they won that game.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 07:52 PM

I'm just busting you. They look to be around a 4 or 5 right now, if they win tonight, i think they jump to the 3 line. Their RPI is 13, and SOS 10 right now.

Onuaku making 2 FT's inside the final minute of reg was amazing.
Posted by: nymmamma

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 10:01 PM

My son said that right before the buzzer in regulation there was a flagrant foul that wasn't called on UConn and that the announcers even talked about it. That would have sent SU to the line. Don't know how I missed that. Did anyone else catch it? I lasted 1/2 way through the 4th OT, then went to bed. Couldn't believe what I was reading this morning! Excellent! That was like playing 2 1/2 games in one night.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/13/09 10:21 PM

Nothing flagrant. Syracuse ran a set play off the inbounds. Thabeet was guarding Harris who was inbounding the ball. Flynn set a pick on Thabeet as Harris ran the boundary, and Thabeet ran into Flynn, who purposefully went down very hard, trying to draw a foul to ge to the FT line with 1.1 seconds left. It is hardly ever called. It's a good play if you can get the ref to call it. It was no more a foul than Devendorfs block on Flynns fastbreak in one of the OT's where the Uconn kid threw himself across the gym like Devo was Jason Peters lead blocking.

Wow, I thought Ongenaet broke his neck. That kid is gonna be all sorts of black and blue tomorrow. They just plain ran outta gas. I've never seen so many missed lay ups. They had a good first half. Flynn MVP for the tourney.

So true. It'll be interesting to see where the selection committee puts SU.

3 seed. The south region looks like it could be tough. Oklahoma and UNC. They are tough but they can be beaten. Take it to em boys. Steven F Austin is the first step.

SU has made it to the final 4 three times,
twice going through team NC.

Do I have the years right ??

Clear path once in the Elite 8, you are kidding right?

Hey, it seems we only lose to Kentucky or Indiana once we get that far, right? Carolina's never been a problem once we've hit elite 8.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/16/09 07:10 PM

i think if they do get past OU they have a tough NC team to face..very athletic and thats the kind of team SU struggles with..i have NC winning it all in my bracket..although it would be nice to see SU win it all, they just dont have the bigs to contend..
Posted by: roadguy

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/16/09 08:26 PM

Coming into this season most "experts" had North Carolina winning it all. As good as the Big East has been this year I still think NC is the team to beat.

In most of my brackets I picked North Carolina and Louisville in the finals.

But hey, what do I know?

I listened to Boeheim's presser after the game on the radio.

I watched a repeat of the press conference and Boeheim just said a win is a win, and on to next game. No way they gonna win Sunday if they play like they did in the second half today. What about Harris's thumb? Did he hurt it today? Missed that. I also hope Ongeneat is healthy. He looked green today on the bench.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/23/09 02:13 AM

I thought they did a much better job and again that 2 - 3 zone drives teams batty...
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/23/09 03:34 AM

They played very well today. They play a zone, they do not cover a man. If Harris, over rotates to that corner, it is an easy dump down for a layup. The kid hit shots. In the 2nd half he didn't. If he over rotated, and gave up layups, you people would yell at him for giving up layups.

Christ, they dominated again. Game was never in doubt. The beauty of this team, is that they do not all have to be on for them to win. Survive and advance. We hadn't won a tourney game since 2004, and yet some of you guys still continue to find something to complain about, even when they dominate and win.

Of Syracuse's 9 losses, 6 came from teams in the sweet 16, and a 7th lost in the 2nd round. Thats a pretty damn good season.

Game was never in doubt? With 6 minutes to go they were up 4, after blowing a 15 point lead. Yes, they dominated. Yes, they looked good. But, they're not gonna get past Oklahoma State unless they make the 3's and have great D. I will say, they did step it up today on defense, w/the exception of Harris's inability to guard the guy in the corner, first half.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/23/09 02:15 PM

#1..The game was never in doubt. ASU cut the lead to 4, as close as they had got all game, Syracuse then promptly went on a 8-0 run. They did not blow a 15 pt lead, because ASU never tied the game, so you did not blow the lead.

#2 They play Oklahoma next, Oklahoma St lost yesterday.

#3 THEY PLAY A ZONE....YOU DONT COVER A MAN. IF HE OVER ROTATES TO THAT CORNER, THEY PASS THE BALL INSIDE AND NOW YOU COMPLAIN BECAUSE HE GIVES UP A LAYUP.
Posted by: Coach64

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/23/09 02:24 PM

Of Course they need to play well next week. It's the freaking Sweet 16, every team will need to play well or they will get beat.
Posted by: Jelloshot

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/23/09 04:19 PM

I thought they played an all around good game, and STILL could play much better. If Devo and Leo get hot togehter and Paul can get more aggressive, it would open it up a bit for Flynn to slice and dice, and also bring in more action from the front line. Also gotta keep the three big men out of foul trouble. They have the potential to go far. After watching every single game on TV this weekend, I can see SU advancing but they need to have 7 players play at the very TOP of their game for 40 minutes. Boeheims time out about 10 minutes(I think) into the second half was brilliance, it was the closest ASU got and they were on a streak, that took the momentum right away.

Flynn Returning.....

Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn said he will return to school for his junior season, according to the Post-Standard.

"I'm coming back to Syracuse," Flynn told the newspaper. "That's it. I'm coming back to Syracuse. There is no 'as of right now.' I'm coming back to Syracuse. Yeah. I'm coming back to Syracuse."

Flynn won Big East Tournament MVP despite the fact Syracuse did not win the title game against Louisville. He averaged 19.8 points and 9.3 assists in four games at Madison Square Garden. Flynn is averaging 13.5 points and seven assists through his first two games of this year's NCAA Tournament.

The No. 3 seed Orange will face No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the Sweet 16 on Friday

I'm kinda concerned about Blake Griffin, he's a powerhouse of a kid and thier high scorer, mostly inside, our big three need to stay out of foul trouble, and hopefully get him into foul trouble.

Re: Syracuse Basketball '09 - 03/25/09 02:21 PM

I view the Griffin match up as a Harangody match up. He may get his points, but its going to take others to beat us. Oklahoma is going to have to shoot the ball well to win. They have struggled against zones this year.

That must be based on everybody coming back. Too many "ifs" right now. Flynn, Harris, Devendorf. "If" they all come back and have their heads screwed on straight, they're a legit top five team-but those are HUGE "ifs."

I know, but unfortunately, I don't see any of them coming back.

Harris was totally unmotivated for the last three months of the season, and just seemed like he didn't care one way or the other (except against UConn).

Devendorf's already a senior and I just can't see him taking graduate classes. \:\/

And I think Flynn lands top 15 and is gone. Can't blame him a bit.

There are probably a dozen teams that Flynn could start for in the NBA next year. I don't know if he'll go top 5, but I think his stock will rise over the next couple months, and he'll make the lottery.

Slush grad courses? Yeah, there probably are. And I suppose he may not be on course to graduate this May anyway, so it might not be an issue.

I'd like nothing more than to see all three of them back in Orange next season. That would be one fun team to watch.

Best of luck to Harris and Devo, also.
Reportedly, they are both searching out agents.

There were several news stories out of Syracuse today that reported Harris said he hasn't made a decision as of yet.

Interesting read here

honestly i think these kids are stupid...what happens if there Duds in the nba? no college degree to fall back on and have to go back to college to finish up there degree...bonehead moves in my opinion.

Even if they are duds in the NBA, which probably wont be, the minimum salary alone is enough to put someone through college and grad school. Im sure they will be ok.

Out of the three the only one who will be drafted is Flynn. He will probably only see a few minutes a night if he even makes the team that drafts him.

Devendorf will probably end up playing in a league in Europe.

Today's report, Flynn's decision to leave is not 'set in stone'.
Coach B claims he may return, decision up in the air...

Good for him.

Re: Johnny Flynn Signs with Agent - 04/21/09 01:28 AM

I'll miss him at SU. But after all the money he'll make either in the NBA or Europe, he'll only be in a better position to better himself, which is why anyone goes to college. And if he wants/needs that degree in years or decades, he'll be able to get it whenever he wants it. Even easier than today without risking career ending injury while in college.

This is the smart move for him...
