Donald Trump’s press conference is a complete disaster

In what might be his worst press conference to date, Trump just announced that he’s bailing out Kodak for no apparent reason. He seemed to imply that he’s putting a coronavirus vaccine into production, when it doesn’t even exist. He’s insisting that hydroxychloroquine is a perfectly safe coronavirus drug, when even his own FDA has revoked its approval as a coronavirus treatment. And he’s defending a controversial doctor who thinks that “alien DNA” and “demon spawn” are real things.

President Trump said his administration will use the Defense Production Act to turn Kodak into a pharmaceutical company, an announcement he called “one of the most important deals in the history of US pharmaceutical industries.”

“With this new agreement, my administration is using the Defense Production Act to provide a $765 million loan to support the launch of Kodak pharmaceuticals,” the President said at a news conference.

Trump called it a “different field” for the company known mostly for its cameras and film, saying they had “hired some of the best people in the world.”

“It's a breakthrough in bringing in pharmaceutical manufacturing back to the United States,” Trump said.
Some context: The move is the 33rd time the Trump White House has used the DPA after facing criticism for not enacting it earlier in the pandemic.

“Remember when you were saying I didn't use it enough, I didn't use it enough?” he asked reporters rhetorically, “and now you heard it's the 33rd use. We don't talk about it all the time, we used it and we used it as a little bit of a threat, frankly, with certain companies that weren't doing as we were asking them to do, and it came through as both a threat and a usage. But this is our 33rd use of the Defense Production Act.”

The company will produce generic active pharmaceutical ingredients, Trump said, “using advanced manufacturing techniques Kodak will also make the key starting materials that are the building blocks for many drugs in a manner that is both cost competitive and environmentally safe will be competitive with almost all countries and soon with all countries.”

Now yes but only because Cuomo had done months of work first in getting the Covid rate down. If NY's Covid rate now was as high as the red states now they would of put this project someplace else.

(love your line through my post. It really bugs you that Cuomo did so much better fighting Covid than Trump. smile )

Why did cuomo not take $700 million from the NYS budget and loan it to Kodak?

Cuomo has been governor since 2011 so why did he not use $700 million from the NYS budget prior to 2020 to loan kodak?

Is this deal saving Kodak....maybe in the short term. It puts money into their coffers. Is this going to have a huge impact on jobs. Hardley they say there will be about 300 new jobs which will be in two locations. The Rochester location and St Paul MN. Yes it's something but Kodak will never be the jugernaught company they were. They say the company could be 25% of the active ingredients for "non-biologic, non-antibacterial, generic pharmaceuticals but it will take up to 5 years to reach that point.

Oh so it will not be 300 new jobs for Rochester as bluezone likes to brag about. Maybe half of that grin

Re: Cuomo thanks Trump - 07/30/20 03:00 PM

Not exactly sure but reports have mentioned both cities and job totals of 300-350.

My point is these numbers are nothing to get really excited about considering the total investment. Kodak at its height employed 60,000 just in Rochester. They total 5,000 worldwide currently.
