Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 05:11 AM

He's flopped on a key issue for the middle class. He was for this at any price to help low and middle class families. His dreams are all noble, but they will not play out in practicality. The fun's about to start!

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 07:37 AM

CHICAGO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama is not planning to implement a windfall profit tax on oil companies because prices have dropped below $80 a barrel, an aide said on Tuesday.

"President-elect Obama announced the policy during the campaign because oil prices were above $80 per barrel," an aide on Obama's transition team said. "They are currently below that now and expected to stay below that."

Oil prices have fallen from a record $147 a barrel in July to under $50 this week.

Obama, who signaled early in his campaign for the White House that he would take an active approach to oil markets as president, had planned to use the revenue from a windfall profits tax to fund a tax rebate for low- and middle-income families struggling with high energy prices.

But the aide said Obama's presidential campaign had already taken the price drop into account six weeks ago. When Obama laid out his economic plan for the middle class in mid-October, revenue from a windfall profit tax was not included because of the price change, he said.

Obama has not said there will not be a windfall profits tax. He has said that now is not the time to implement it.

Just the thought of a windfall tax makes me cringe in disbelief. How can anyone think that this could happen without the people being the ones that the cost would be passed onto? It would not be the oil people paying for it, they have to earn money too. It would only raise oil even more.

Gee, Palin did it in Alaska and they didn't have a problem there. Must be they passed it on to us in the lower 48?
Perhaps you need to take basic Economics and Accounting. Then maybe you'd understand.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 12:06 PM

Oil is higher because of it. You actually think the oil execs are going to pay out of their own pockets? Where do you suppose they get money? Even this is simple enough for you to comprehend. No businessperson in their right mind would say, "Gee, we have to pay more taxes lets lower the price we charge" If they remain in business with out going under, they have no choice but to raise prices. You have to have an operating cash flow. A business can't wait for welfare to keep them going. Now if you want to Create a situation like Chavez has, then by all means, raise taxes on oil, then take government control of all your oil business and turn all your citizens into brain dead sheep, then your on the right path

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 12:50 PM

The oil windfall profits tax made huge sense when oil was above $100 a barrel, and the oil companies were reaping windfall profits that had nothing to do with the value added they were contributing in the refining and wholesale areas.
As I posted earlier, your 'goddess" thinks its a great idea for Alaska, and they have an oil windfall profits tax.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 01:03 PM

OK, so you agree with Palin? What has Obama done that you agree with. I know he has a long list of accomplishments.
Posted by: Mountain Man

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 02:05 PM

Obama's accomplishment, as far as I can tell, is that he can convince a crowd before him that what he's selling will cure them. A huckster, a snake oil salesman, a carny barker.

By the way, I don't and didn't support the republican platform, so don't start yelling that I love Palin and McCain. America was fooled by both parties this year, and the Democrats were REALLY fooled when McCain/Palin ran against them. It was a guaranteed loss for the GOP, and they are quite happy to not have the White House in 2009.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 02:32 PM

Well, I guess we will all have to wait. So far a super majority of Americans are pleased with his cabinet selections and proposals. We still have to endure another month and a half of bush, and then Obama will have his opportunity to show us.
I have not been this happy about an election since 1960. That is a long time. Sorry that you can't join the party, but I'll celebrate for both of us.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 04:58 PM

retired soldier, go ahead and celebrate for both of us. I can't get my arms around this guy at all, and his pull backs are contrary to his hard line as a candidate.

I will support him and hope he does what he says. I just don't believe him.

I guess support for his cabinet selections comes from what we read. I read the opposite, that people are worried and angry. In any event, these are not the people who are noted for being catalysts of change. I do, though, want him to succeed as what he wants would serve us all. I simply doubt the sincerity of his intentions.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/03/08 05:34 PM

He has the courage to include a republican as DOD Chief, a republican as National Security Advisor, and several women, including his chief rival. He has the courage to seek diverse opinions and embrace controversy and dissent inorder, hopefully, to find the best solutions to problems.
I think he's great. Of course, a piece of basalt would look good as a leader compared to bush, but that is another story.

And his pull backs are many.

Even during the campain his rhetoric xtarted to sound more like Ronald Reagon than the Obmama of only months before.

Such as his sudden tough talk on invading nations armed with nukes.

Specifically when he said that if he knew Osama was there he would invade Pakistan.

Obama also warned Iran that all options for our defense remain on the table if they were to do something really stupid like .. say ... nuke Tel Aviv.

And Moveon/codepink/ ANSWER all worshipped this guy? The far loonie left is openly saying they were betrayed.

LOL

How anyone can doubt the sincerity of ANYONE who choses to go through the grueling process of getting elected President. I have a lot of negative opinions about GWB but NONE OF THEM involve "doubting the sincerity of his intentions".

If you doubt the sincerity of Obama's intentions that means you really think he's hoping to do more damage than good, which is mind boggling, frankly.

Frankly. He's very slick and has been marketed amazingly well.

I don't think he has a real clue but the people he will surround himself with do.

I support him insofar as he is will be the President of the USA and I am a citizen. He is will be our Military's Commander in Chief.

You have people using a slick anology/ photo of cowboy boots hanging inches off the ground in front of an American flag that is CLEARLY meant to give a subliminal if not outright impression of a hung GW Bush.

What do you think someone would be dealt with that made a simular avatar of even the hint of a hanging/hung black man?

Banned if not burned.

Bottom line.

I respect his office, yet I do not believe the man has a plan.
Others do.

and Obama can and will and has spoken eloquently about all kinds of things.

But the reality is, those who advise him, just like any other president, will control where this boat goes from here and how fast we get there.

LOL

I love people who think Obama "doesn't have a real clue". He's clearly unbelievably intelligent - not just on his own, but also smart enough to surround himself with OTHER smart people.

I have no opinion on the pic/avatar in question as I haven't seen it. And I suppose I'd be more offended by a picture of a black man being lynched than a picture that may, might, could suggest that perhaps the president is being hung. I'm not sure what a picture that "hinted that a black man" was being hung would look like. If one pops up I'll be sure to weigh in.

Nothing in that reply was in response to my wonderment that your doubting of the sincerity of his intentions is essentially a statement that you believe his intentions are not good, but bad. Which is amazing.

Past Tense, he is remarkably intelligent. That alone probably got many to follow him like he was Christ on earth.

As for doubting his sincerity, that's a personal choice, but your reason for validating his sincerity: "How anyone can doubt the sincerity of ANYONE who chooses to go through the grueling process of getting elected President. I have a lot of negative opinions about GWB but NONE OF THEM involve ""doubting the sincerity of his intentions"", WOW! There isn't a single politician that isn't an ego-maniac. Obama even said that in a debate and that he had a "very healthy" image of himself.

Politicians may have an agenda for us, good or bad, but they have one hell of a personal agenda in place too.

First of all, that's not my reasoning. That's Sky's reasoning. I have no idea how doubting someone's sincerity is a "choice", but if you doubt the sincerity of someone's intentions - in this case, the President-Elect of the United States - then you doubt he wishes to HELP this country and rather, intends to HURT IT. I have no earthly idea what else "doubting the sincerity of his intentions" could mean.

As for having a healthy ego - I EFFING HOPE SO. Just as I hope the brain surgeon who dug a tumor out of my cousin's brain a few months ago had a MASSIVE, ENORMOUS EGO, I also hope my President has a giant reserve of self-confidence. I really don't want the leader of the free world to be riddled with self-doubt. Do you?

Originally Posted By: Mountain Man

Perhaps, but I don't think anyone goes through what a candidate goes through without honestly wanting to affect (at least what they perceive as) positive change for America. While you and I might disagree on what constitutes "good" or "bad" for the country, and while we might agree with the president or any other elected official, that doesn't lessen the "sincerity of their intentions".

And let's not pretend that if were John McCain gearing up for transition right now we wouldn't see the exact same thing - the reality of campaign promises in the light of implementation.

I know, but the country as a whole didn't have much to choose from.

I believe you are referring to my photo avatar.
Jonathan Byrd {folk singer}in Dingo boots hanging inches off the ground in front of an American flag .
http://www.myspace.com/jonathanbyrd
It was meant to give the impression of what he and many of us felt our government would do like to do to us .
Never crossed my mind that some would see it as Bush.
I can't seem to locate the photo now .

I have every photo you ever posted on your myspace page.

Photo after photo showing you obsession with hating GW Bush.

Like this one that shows cowboy boots limply hanging in front of the American Flag ...

Oh yeah, that aint supposed to be Bush. Rightttttttttttttt.

Just like this is not your president.

Also off your wide open myspace page. Just as was this gem of intelligence.

Or how about how you got your screen name ... Aluminum Mule?

On your myspace page you babble "FRIGGEN BUSH" every other breath.

That alone makes you dangerous. And your lame explanation of your avatar, that dissapeared when I first pointed out that it was not only offensive but a borderline threat against the life of a sitting president.

Yeah, Bush wants us all to hang ourselves in cowboy boots in front of an american flag in texas,

And you dress funny. Nice Aluminum mule ya gots there.

Many of US did not and do not like Bush.

But he is YOUR president FOOL.

Just as Obama WILL BE my president after the 20th of January.

He's not the only one doing it.

If you want more photo's of the messiah I'll leave the door open for you fetus...

Oh, OK.

Pasttense how can my decision to doubt Obama be anything other than a personal choice? Did you not say: "have no idea how doubting some one's sincerity is a "choice"

now understand me, I want to be wrong about Obama. I don't trust his intentions. Does he mean to deliberately cause harm to America? No more than did George Bush...look where that got us. At best he is a dreamer, at worst an egomaniac charlatan. I lean toward the latter.

I do believe his intentions are not in the interest of the people even though his rhetoric was such. His voting record, what there was of it, was not so purposeful in helping the people of America.

nothing would make me more happy than to have you shove my words down my throat in a year. If he does what he promised, he'd be great beyond belief.

As I said earlier, I don't like him, but I will support him when he's in office..at least for a while.

Re: Obama backs off windfall profit tax for big oil - 12/04/08 02:42 PM

Ok. You think Obama "doesn't mean what he says". I do. I'm supposed to be shocked and saddened that he's hit the point that every President-elect hits: reality in implementation of campaign promises. That's a big "LOL" to me. Had John McCain won he'd be in the same position now "I said this, but the reality is _____" on any myriad of topics/issues. As for "egomaniac" - I think one has to be in order to be president in modern times. I have no idea how else one would handle the responsibilities involved.

As for "choosing" to believe someone or not - maybe it's just the wording you used I didn't get. If someone demonstrates they are untrustworthy that's one thing but that's not exactly what you seem to say - you sort of do, but then you say you're leaving room for him to prove himself trustworthy although you've already said you've chosen to believe he isn't so...it's just not clear to me but it doesn't really have to be. It's a forum, not a masters thesis or anything.

I'm not going to shove anyone's words down anyone's throat. He'll get some things done, and he won't get other things done. It's not that much different than any other president.

Food God PastTense, Obama...McCain...you're making me relive the nightmare of these two jokers.

We've been boned. He isn't even in office and he's backing down/ I am glad McCain is gone and am quite sad that Obama will get the free pass that no one else would get.

Let's see what happens. I hope you win the argument!

Mr. Obama always mean what he say!!!

"Yesterday, John McCain actually said that if he's president that he'll take on, and I quote, 'the old boys network in Washington.' Now I'm not making this up. This is somebody who's been in Congress for twenty-six years, who put seven of the most powerful Washington lobbyists in charge of his campaign. And now he tells us that he's the one who's gonna' to take on the old boys network." - Barack Obama

"If you think those lobbyists are working day and night for John McCain just to put themselves out of business, well then Iíve got a bridge to sell you up in Alaska." Barack Obama!!!

"One year from now, we have the chance to tell all those corporate lobbyists that the days of them setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more to take on lobbyists than any other candidate in this race - and Iíve won. I donít take a dime of their money, and when I am President, they wonít find a job in my White House." - Barack Obama, November 3, 2007

"I believe I can bring about that kind of change - because I'm the only candidate in this race who's actually worked to take power away from lobbyists by passing historic ethics reforms in Illinois and in the U.S. Senate. And I'm the only candidate who isn't taking a dime from Washington lobbyists. They have not funded my campaign, they will not run my administration, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I'm President of the United States." - Barack Obama, 4/2/08

"We will not take a dime from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACS - we're going to change how Washington works. They will not fund my party, they will not run our White House, and they will not drown out the voice of the American people when I am president of the United States of America." - Barack Obama 6/5/08

So far Mr. Obama hire 34 lobbyist for white house team!!!

Lobbyist for trial lawyers association!!!

Lobbyist for Fannie Mae!!!

Lobbyist for drug companies!!!

Now have job for Mr. Obama!!!
