French workers biggest whiners, Irish happiest: study Mon May 14, 10:31 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - French workers are the world's biggest whiners, according to a study published Monday which said the Irish complain least about their lot.

Britons come second to their Gallic cousins in the moaning stakes, followed by Sweden, the United States and Australia. Japanese workers have the lowest morale, but don't complain so much.

The lowest levels of whining were found in the Netherlands, Thailand and Ireland, according to the study by the FDS research group.

"It is interesting to note that after France, Britain and Sweden, the world's biggest workplace whingers are Americans, despite their having by far the highest levels of income," said FDS chief Charlotte Cornish.

"Compare them to Thai workers: while real levels of income are more than eight times higher in the States, more workers in the US feel their pay is a problem than in Thailand," she added.

The study, entitled "What Workers Want, A Worldwide Study of Attitudes to Work and Work-Life Balance", draws on data from 14,000 employees in 23 countries.

They were notably asked about their satisfaction with issues including pay levels and their work-life balance, as well as average working hours.

In terms of worker morale, Dutch workers are the happiest, followed by their Thai and Irish counterparts. The lowest morale of all is found in Japan, followed by Germany, said the study.

The study's authors noted that rightwing French President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy shouldn't expect things to become happier anytime soon, as he prepares to shake up notoriously strike-prone France.

"The UK and US, with their marked competitive individualism and unequal wealth distribution, both appear towards the top of the world's list of whingiest workers," said Cornish.

"The French come out on top -- it seems unlikely that Nicolas Sarkozy's election and the likely shift to more Anglo-Saxon economic practices will make the workers in France any more happy with their lot," she added.

No matter what developments may come, here or abroad, for better or worse, it's a comfort to know that jingoism and ethnocentrism are still cornerstones of our national attitude and that Ugly American Syndrome is alive and well.

Ah, so you're admitting that you're no better than the Frenc you so despise, yes? Good for you. Admitting you have a problem is a big first step.

And you posted it, so one could only assume you agree.

Actually I don't blame America first, just the stupid people running it and living in it.

The last time I looked, the Irish economy was booming! If I was an Irish citizen, I'd be pretty happy too! In fact, the unemployment rate is so low that they have to import labor for menial jobs...from England! Now, you just KNOW they love that irony.

I think if there is actually something interesting to note in all of this nonsense that's been posted in response thus far, it's that a news outlet labeled "workplace dissatisfaction" as "whining." Seems strange that the reporter in question, rather than reporting the facts of the study, would decide instead to editorialize and label individuals who are not happy at work "whiners." Maybe he just loves his job. But maybe he's biased toward business. Either way, it certainly takes away from the actual information presented by the article.

From what I've been hearing, I understand they have a better healthcare system than we do.

Re: French workers biggest whiners, Irish happiest: - 05/16/07 01:34 PM

Well, pretty much every single industrialized nation on the planet has a better health care system than we do. Even CUBA has a better health care system than we do - and lower infant mortality than Washington, DC, to boot, which is ironic...

If the French are unhappy at work, I suspect it is for the same reasons many americans are unhappy - they are probably treated poorly by superiors, have shoddy child care programs, and probably are working too many hours for too little pay. I don't really get why they elected that right-wing freak, but ah well...

I understand that we are 37th in the world when it comes to healthcare...sandwiched in between Slovenia and Uruguay.

On the domestic agenda health care reform is the number one priority of the American public. That is why it has never really been on bush2's agenda. He did do a preemptive strike by creating his Medicare pill benefit that really only benefited the pharmaceutical industry.
